How many Robin Hood remakes do we have to endure?
11:06 AM on 05/18/2010
No remakes or sequels here. Every Robin Hood film I've ever seen has differing storylines and plots. The legendary title character continues to fascinate generation after generation.

I'm not sure what planet you're living on, but on earth a 36 million dollar opening weekend is definitely not a flop. This movie will easily make 120 to 150 mil domestically. It doesn't matter that it came in 2nd except for bragging rights. The movie itself is only so so and not one of Ridley's best.

South Park ruined Russell Crowe for me! Whenever I see him, I can not help but laugh!

Whoever picked the Robin Hood release date to be only a week after Iron Man 2 should be fired.

"crushes"?! Come on HP.... 3 of us watched Robin Hood today. Wasn't expecting much (perhaps Russell Crowe's washed up?!) but it was brilliant. Was very pleasantly surprised. A great story about the origins of Robin Hood.

Well, I actually saw both films . . . sort of. I walked out of "Robin Hood" after 40 minutes - dreadful. I am a fan of "Gladiator" so this was really disappointing. "Iron Man 2" was no masterpiece but it was very entertaining and fun. It might have been great if it would have had more of Mickey Rourke in it - he made the first 45 minutes really exciting to me. I loved the opposing worlds of Tony Stark and Ivan Vanko - a fascinating conflict. Downey and Rourke are great together.

A bit misleading of a headline wouldn't you say HuffPost?

I have not seen Robin Hood. However, I plan on seeing it eventually. Looks a bit boring, but I thought the same about Gladiator. Which by the way, later became one of my favorite films. I am a bit put off by the bad reviews of the film. Non-the-less, I have found that many critics have been off in their reviews of some film. I believe politics sometimes play a role in their reviews.

Speaking of politics, Iron Man 2 received rave reviews and to me was an awful movie. Rourke was the only bright spot and he didn't get enough screen time. Total waste of money. Message to film makers...study Spider Man 2 when making a super hero sequel.

Just my two cents worth.

"Iron Man 2 received rave reviews and to me was an awful movie."

Rave reviews, where? Rotten Tomatoes top critics gave it 66%, but viewers 85%, last time I checked. People who knew what to expect liked it. What were you expecting, Citizen Kane?

So, I guess I should have gone in expecting crap.

A called this a flop last week and I've been proved right. Even taking in international numbers this stinker was DOA. If you can't finish first on your first week of release with no new competition, you have flopped.

Russell Crowe is over. He never could carry a film and this is further proof. Flop after flop aftere flop and he still makes way too much money. The least bankable star ever. Why does it go on? Please stop carrying Russell Croiwe's water Ridley!

Oops, I meant Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., not Jr.

I've never encountered a Robin Hood I did not like, including the 1950s TV series based on the same. I enjoy the fact that none of the various films about this legendary figure are remakes of each other or sequels. Each tells its own version of the story. I did not go into Ridley Scott's film expecting it to resemble any previous film version. I have enjoyed each portrayal of Robin Hood on its own terms. There is the swashbuckling and dashing Robin Hood as portrayed by both Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Errol Flynn, highly entertaining and broadly played with great bravado; the aging outlaw, played by Sean Connery; and the earnest, 1990s Kevin Costner portrayal. As a teen, I enjoyed the Robin Hood TV series with British actor, Richard Greene, in the title role. I love all these guys and now I also enjoy the Russell Crowe portrayal, although it's very different from any of the above-named portrayals. I am, in fact, profoundly grateful that Crowe and director Scott did not attempt to emulate any of the other Robin Hoods. As much as I enjoyed the previous films, I found the current film well-acted and visually stunning with more historically accurate, rather than storybook portrayals of 12th century life, which was often oppressive and grim, indicating how Robin Hood became the character for which he is best remembered. This legend seems to be timeless and I find the diverse portrayals more or less equally valid.

BUT..Put the little green hat on Russell, then review....

I remembered watching Robin Hood when I was young, and I enjoyed it tremendously. It was vibrant with colors of the forest, characters were fun, with combat trickery. The damsel of distress was gutsy, mystique, funny, sexy and heroic. This new RH looks the opposite. Thanks, but no thanks! Errol Flynn was the best!

Robert Downey Jr. is beautiful.. thats whyyy.

Robin Hood was the number one movie worldwide this past weekend. So, does it really make sense to say that Iron Man "crushes" Robin Hood? Isn't the headline just a teensy bit provincial? How about "Robin Hood Pierces Iron Man"?

HP loves to use words like 'crush, destroy, obliterate, etc.' and it gets very annoying. Robin Hood looks awful. Iron Man 2 should be a superior movie. I don't want to watch Braveheart/Gladiator again.
