Michelle Obama GW Graduation: First Lady Delivers George Washington University Commencement Address

Michelle Obama George Washington Graduation

WASHINGTON — First lady Michelle Obama challenged George Washington University graduates at their commencement Sunday to "keep giving" through community service work and to "keep engaging" with the world.

Obama spoke to some 5,000 graduates and their families at the ceremony on the National Mall. She agreed to be their speaker after students, faculty and staff met her challenge to complete 100,000 hours of community service.

"I have one more request to make of you, one more challenge," Obama said during her speech. "Keep going. Keep giving. Keep engaging."

Graduates in black robes cheered as Obama spoke with the Capitol behind her. The university said that 163,000 hours had actually been worked. Obama noted many of the accomplishments: improving a Washington school, visiting with veterans, teaching English to refugees and shoveling snow during a record winter snow storm.

But she urged students to continue the work, both in the United States and abroad. She said serving would make "the world safer" and make the students "more competitive."

"So many of today's challenges are borderless – from the economy to terrorism, to climate change ... more than any other generation yours is fully convinced that you're uniquely equipped to solve those challenges," said Obama, who spoke for about 30 minutes.

She expressed confidence in the graduates.

"You guys can't be stopped. You don't know the meaning of the word can't. And every time someone's tried to tell you that you've replied what? Oh yes, we can," Obama said, a refrain President Obama used during his campaign.

Obama said that at her husband's inauguration, "he pledged to seek a new era of American engagement, and he asked each of us to embrace anew our duties to ourselves, our nation and the world."

"Now I'm not a president. I'm just a citizen. But as a citizen I'm asking you as graduates of this global institution to seize those responsibilities gladly," she said. "I'm asking you to play your part."

Graduates said the first lady's words moved them and had motivated them during the year.

Gilbert Rein, 21, a graduate from Marlboro, New Jersey, said he had always done volunteer work with his fraternity, but the first lady's challenge pushed them to do more.

"This year we went above and beyond," he said.

Rein, who is going to law school, said he plans to do pro bono work to continue to give back.

Saturday's speech was not the only commencement address the first lady has given this year. Earlier this month she spoke at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, a historically black college. Obama, who graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law School, will also speak next month at the graduation of Anacostia Senior High School in Washington, a public school she visited last year as part of her mentoring program for young women.

During the ceremony, George Washington University president Steven Knapp presented Obama with an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. Pianist and composer Dave Brubeck and entrepreneur A. James Clark also received honorary degrees at the commencement.

Madame First Lady Obama,
I sincerely thank you for speaking at the commencement of my alma mater. Your wisdom is priceless.

Our distinguished, intelligent and graceful First Lady gave an inspiring speech. She plants a garden, helps out in her community and is a great role model in many ways.

I would rather serve my community with others in a group effort any day of the week than to pay $100,000 to a bitter, vindictive pundit just so she can line her purse.

Do you remember the eloquent and moving speech that Michelle Obama gave on the opening day of the Democratic National Convention? She talked of their family values, their dreams for their daughters and her relationship with her husband..... ALL things supposedly so near and dear to the conservative "heart"!

Apparently her speech was dispelling too many racial/cultural myths for many on the right, including Sean Hannity, who told his radio audience the day after the speech:

"Don't you believe it ladies and gentlemen! Everything that Michelle Obama said was scripted, PURE HOLLYWOOD! Never forget that this is an ANGRY BLACK WOMAN"!

No... can't have people believing that a Black is capable of giving the speech and having the humanity that Michelle Obama displayed! No sir... wouldn't do! Thankfully Hannity HELPED get the Obama's in to the White House!

Oh ARRRRRIIIIIAAAAAANA where are you? You need to SERIOUSLY dunce slap whoever the moron was that decided that this lovely, significant piece of news belonged as a blurb in the style section. (Of you knew about it and approved it, find a mirror and whack your own head while you're at it) And to HuffPo in general: SHAME...ON...YOU!!

But, do not despair my latte sippin' liberal friends and fellow bloggers at HuffPo, below you will find the youtube link to the entire speech. (It's actually the whole commencement, the First Lady's speech starts at exactly 55:00 minutes in so just slide the bar to that point to hear it.) It is worth seeing, hearing and enjoying.... So cheers..I have done my best to set this egregious oversight to right.

HuffPo... it's no too late to fix this... post the link, write the article, place it in news where it belongs, along side the President's commencement address from last week end, Pres. Clinton's address, Rachel Maddow's commencement address (at Smith College, she just rocked it by the way)... you know, write this and put it in the serious news section, where everyone can enjoy it. Thank you

Someone in HP is losing their marbles. Why didn't you say what gown was she wearing and who designed it? That would be more proper for STYLE section.

HP - thank your for cover our First Lady's commencement address but please explain why it is in STYLE section since the article is not about what she was wearing (a graduation robe). Your agenda is not too subtle.

Hey HP, Why does Sarah Palin always end up in the "news" slot and First Lady , Michelle Obama, is ALWAYS stuck in the STYLE SECTION??

Our First Lady is MUCH MUCH MORE than just a "muse" for designers....

Just sayin...

Hello??? It's in the COLLEGE section. Believe me, the style section wouldn't be interested in Michelle Obama's black scholastic robe.

The only thing I have to say about the article is she said "I'm not a president. I'm just a citizen."

Barak is only a citizen "supposed to have been drafted" by the people's choosing him as a servant to them. All laws the citizens are subjected to are the laws he is, but he has specific laws as "the servant of the people" he is required to meet, such as ensuring the "faithful execution of the laws," something no president has done.

The reason they have not done it is because they all were selected by a party then presented to the citizens, they were not chosen by the citizens as Amendment 12 require. The only constitutional presidents of the United States were those replacing a discarnated or impeached president.

Therefore, are WE THE PEOPLE going to continue to allow the unconstitutional parties to decide which of the people they control WE THE PEOPLE will elect to fulfill the party's, not the people's, agendas?

Did it put you to sleep or are you saying all United Statesman are asleep?

Yes, I'm sure that's the 'takeaway' the students experienced from our First Lady; not the words of encouragement that she shared, or appreciation for the thanks she gave for the work that they have done.

I don't want to take away from what they felt, I only want the United States to become a nation living according to the laws written to govern us by. I felt they joy while reading it and she did encourage to "keep engaging" and to make "the world safer". It will never be safe is WE THE PEOPLE don't do what the laws require of us.

What about the FLOTUS makes her a permanent in the style section on HP? She's so much more than HP even attempts to make her. Meanwhile Sarah Palin gets on the front page for a tweet.

@GoDems2012:

You are so right. It does make you think Arriania and her peeps have an agenda when someone as accomplished as Mrs. Obama is relegated to the Style Section and a loudmouth cypher such as ex-Gov. Palin is given such prominent space in the Political and other Sections. Sad.

"GoDems2012" and "yougogirl" - you are both right on the money...their coverage of one of the most accomplished women this nation has ever experienced is not the least bit subtle and is demeaning to say the least

I'm wondering why HuffPo placed this story in the Style section???? Seems it's more about what MO had to say in her speech to the grads ... not what she was wearing.

THANK YOU! HP is so disrespectful to the First Lady IMO. They give Sarah Palin her own spot on the politics page or on the main page for doing/saying nothing.
