Peru Earthquake: 6.0 Magnitude Quake Rattles Northern Peru

A 6.0 Richter scale rattled Northern Peru early today, at 11:15 p.m. Local Time (4:00 a.m. GMT), according to the Geophysics Institute of Peru.

The epicenter was located at 219 km of depth and 46 away from Bagua Grande, in Amazonas region.

Here's a wacky question - how many 5.0 and higher earthquakes does the earth experience annually? Are we seeing more or are we just hearing more about them?

Not wacky at all. It's why I said the Earth seems unhappy (metaphorically speaking, of course). There seems to be a whole heck of a lot of (larger magnitude) earthquakes in the past year. Is this the norm & we just didn't know it, is it a shift in the norm, or is it all just a fluke?

Remember 2005 (the Katrina/Rita/Wilma year) when they had to switch to the Greek alphabet to name hurricanes, there were so many of them? It turned out to signify nothing, because the next year was *relatively* quiet for hurricane activity.

Or, maybe the 2012 Mayan end times has populated our collective unconscious & this is all being reported more than it normally would.
