Americans Jailed In Iran Visited By Moms: Prisoners Say Loneliness The Hardest Part

Iran detained the three Americans _ Sarah Shourd, 31; her boyfriend, Shane Bauer, 27; and their friend Josh Fattal, 27 _ along the Iraqi border and have accused them of spying. Their relatives reject the accusation and say the three were hiking in Iraq's scenic and largel

TEHRAN, Iran — Three Americans jailed in Iran for 10 months embraced their mothers and spoke of their life in Tehran's most dreaded prison Thursday in an emotional reunion that Iranian authorities broadcast on a main international channel.

The women hope their weeklong visit will secure the release of Sarah Shourd, 31; her boyfriend, Shane Bauer, 27; and their friend Josh Fattal, 27.

The mothers threw their arms in the air and rushed to embrace their children as they entered a room at a high-rise hotel that overlooks the Evin Prison where the three have been held.

They cried, laughed and kissed. The conservative Islamic head scarves worn by the mothers slipped back and bouquets of flowers were set aside as they sat together and began to reconstruct their lives since last summer.

The families later ate an abundant lunch together at a feast of rice, kebabs and other traditional Middle Eastern dishes. The prisoners ate heartily and appeared to relish the food. The visit was scheduled to last until evening, said the families' Iranian lawyer, Masoud Shafii, but it was not clear whether the three detainees would have to return to the prison for the night.

Iran's main task appeared aimed at leveraging high propaganda value for allowing the visit.

The meeting at the Esteghlal Hotel in north Tehran received extensive coverage on Iran's state-run Press TV, the government's main English-language broadcast arm. Reporters for the foreign media also were allowed their first glimpse of the three Americans since their arrest on the border with Iraq last July.

The trio has been accused of spying and entering Iran illegally after being detained on the porous border with Iraq last July. Relatives say the three were simply hiking in Iraq's scenic and largely peaceful mountainous northern Kurdish region.

The decision to give a highly scripted public face to the private family moments suggests the trip by Nora Shourd, Cindy Hickey and Laura Fattal could be drawn deeper into Iran's brinksmanship with the West over Tehran's disputed nuclear program and a U.S.-led push for harsher sanctions.

Lawyer Shafii predicted it was "very unlikely" that the jailed Americans would be allowed to return home with their mothers because the case has not yet reached the courts.

But he added in an interview with AP Television News that decisions could be made outside the normal legal framework. "Anything can happen," he said.

The three prisoners did not specifically address any of the accusations. It's unclear whether this was their decision or a requirement by Iranian officials.

Iran granted the women visas to visit their children in what it called an "Islamic humanitarian gesture" and the Americans appealed to them to release the three on the same grounds.

"We hope we're going home soon, maybe with our mothers," Josh Fattal said as the group was interviewed while seated together on a low-slung couch.

Added Shane Bauer: "We don't really know much what's going on outside prison. We hope that Iran can continue with humanitarian gestures, like letting our mothers come, by releasing us on humanitarian grounds."

The three prisoners appeared healthy, wearing jeans and polo-style shirts. Sarah Shourd wore a maroon-colored head scarf.

They described their routines behind bars and the small things that take on major significance: being allowed books, letters from home, the ability for some exercise and the one hour each day they are all together.

The last direct contact with their families was a five-minute phone call in March.

Sarah Shourd said the their treatment by the Iranian authorities has been "decent" and loneliness has been the hardest part of her detention because she was isolated as a woman.

"Shane and Josh are in a room together but I'm alone and that's the most difficult thing for me ... I am alone for 23 hours," she said.

In the other hour, "we sing together and tell each other stories about our life," she said.

Swiss diplomats, who represent U.S. interests in Iran, have reported that Sarah was suffering a serious gynecological condition, while Bauer had a stomach ailment. But such health issues were not raised publicly during the meeting.

Shafii said the mothers were seeking to bring their appeal to the highest levels, even hoping for meetings with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in all state matters.

Hickey, Shane Bauer's mother, expressed gratitude "to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the authorities for granting us a visa."

"We know that this is a great humanitarian act that they have given to us. Our reception was wonderful when we came into Iran," she said in comments aired on Press TV.

On Wednesday, Iran's minister of intelligence, Heydar Moslehi, repeated the claims that the trio were involved in espionage.

But Shafii noted that the three have not formally been charged and said allegations have come only from "nonjudicial officials."

The case could face complications from Iran's diplomatic showdown with the U.S. and its allies. Just before the mothers' arrival in Tehran, the United States said it had won support from other major powers for a new set of U.N. Security Council sanctions against Iran over its refusal to stop uranium enrichment.

The U.S., which has not had formal diplomatic relations with Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and its allies accuse Tehran of seeking atomic weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

In recent years, a number of foreigners held by Iranian authorities on espionage and other security-related charges have been released after months of detention – most recently French academic Clotilde Reiss, 24. She was freed last week after more than 10 months in jail. She had been accused of provoking unrest and spying during unrest that broke out after June's disputed presidential election.

Hickey lives in Minnesota, Shourd is from Oakland, California, and Fattal is from suburban Philadelphia.

i hope they get released, but america needs to wake up. crossing a border with out permission (illegal allien) has seen people here advocate for locking them up, even worse, shoot at them while crossing, to defend our borders. not exactly easy to take our own medicine. at least they are going to get a trial, and have a lawyer. i'm pretty sure crossing into a country with out authorization is the reason for being locked up, how can anyone question why charges not yet filed. perhaps they will need to stay there 10yrs while Iran decides if they are spies or combatants. i truely feel for these kids, but for america as a whole, this is how we treat people, so it's hard to cry foul.

I just find it hard to believe that they were hiking on the Iran/Iraq border considering what was happening in Iraq at the time. But it's not nice for the Iranians to put people in prison without charging them. We would never do something like that.

Huffington post had a story that the US is holding several Iranians the Obama administration and the Bush administration kidnapped and have brought to solitary confinement, now more than 2 years, without trial.

Not only these hikers, were hiking in Iraq, they were hicking at the Kurdish section of the border where skirmishes between Iran and separative groups occur frequently. An area considered a war zone.

"Iran’s ambassador to Iraq, Hassan Kazemi-Qomi, told Iranian state radio that U.S. servicemen arrested and jailed Ahmad Barazandeh seven years ago and Ali Abdollahi three years ago “on the basis of groundless accusations” and for traveling without passports."

It only hurts when Americans are detained because we do not care about our treatment of foreign nationals by our officials. Our attitude has always been that we are better than the rest of the world and we are above the law. In fact, that is the intention of Texas lawmakers and Board of Education.

And what the he11 were these three doing hiking in the middle east? Do they not know that this part of the world, no matter how quiet it seems, is boiling with crazy governments, people, and fanatical partisans.
couldn't they have hiked in the grand canyon or something?

so I wonder.....

if three Iranians got visas to Mexico then went hiking around the US border and were apprehended in US territory, would they be treated simply as illegal border crossers and sent back with a fine or would homeland security call in the FBI?

I can see it now, "we are considering these three as enemy combatants with no Miranda rights..."

you can't compare apples and oranges. Islamic regime of Iran has slaughtered many of its own people in the past 31 years in the same prison where the 3 Americans are held. The Evin prison defines the word "horror" in real life. Although I am sure that the Americans are not and will not be treated as bad as the Iranian citizens. I hope they are freed soon and never travel to dangerous places again at least for their moms' sakes.

If they are innocent

who am I to say they are guilty? who am I to say they are innocent?
we don't have enough information to make that judgement

taking the information we have on face value, I ask myself these questions:
Is there country a declared enemy of Iran? -Yes
As such, were their actions suspicious? -yes
As such, does Iran have cause to suspect them of espionage? -yes
As such, is Iran breaking the law in holding them and investigating their actions? -No

regardless of what atrocities the US or Iran perpetrated or have perpetrated; in the case of these three people, I see no wrong doing on the part of the Iranians so far

Seems kinda strange that these evil Iranians will let these people have a visit with thier parents, eat good, and watch TV...and the good Americans hold people without trial, in secret prisons, torturing them and holding them forever.

The rest was a post down below that s/he was attacking.

You are in complete denial, we torture, we kidnap people and hold them prisoners for years without any charges(and then release them) we drop bombs on civilian population, and we answer to no one.
Why would you expect others to treat us any different.
FYI these people were in Iran illegally taking pictures, if they were Iranians that got caught in the the U S they would be at Gitmo faster than you can say CIA.

The one thing that I have never understood is: How do you accidentally wander into Iran? And, secondly, why were they hiking in Kurdistan?
Part of me feels sorry for them. The other part of me remembers George Carlin's joke about passive eugenics: "The kid dumb enough to swallow too many marbles, shouldn't grow up to have kids of his own."
The nicest thing you could say about these kids is that they are thrill seekers. Well, they got their thrill.

I would say there is a lesson here. First, Sec Clinton gets her hat (or head scarf) handed to her in this sanctions scheme, and secondly the world is comparing the treatment of foriegn prisoners in Iran to the treatment of prisoners in American hands...that is...if you can find them.

Wow alright. Do you really think this something for IRI to be proud of? Think languishing in jail is something that's fun while not even able to see evidence leveled against you? Arbitrary jailing and lack of the rule of law is what Iranians face all the time. Here's Shirin Ebadi's take on the incident:

http://www.democracynow.org/2010/3/8/iranian_nobel_peace_prize_winner_shirin

"Why has Iran apprehended them? The accusation against these young people, if we can say that they have perpetrated a crime, is that they have crossed the border. And pursuant to Iranian laws, there’s only a fine to be paid for it, not imprisonment. The government of Iran should not have arrested these people."

My belief is...

They got caught crossing the border illegally into Iran. They are from a nation that has threatened the Iranians.

First question...how the heck hikes in a war zone? Spies? CIA infiltrators?

I bet that was the same question the Iranians were asking when they found these people.

Lets put it this way...like they would in Arizona. Given the situation these people crossed the border into Iran illegally...the Iranians have a 'reasonable suspicion' that these people were spies. They will be held until they can prove they are not. The burden of proof is on them....like in Arizona.

I've followed the "American hikers in Iran" story since the first day it was reported. Of course my initial reaction, like many commenters here was, "What in the world were they doing hiking there?" But I have read countless stories about these young people and have decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and not label them as CIA agents (part time or otherwise).

They are young, global adventurers with a love of other cultures, people, and travel; you can read all about their interests and travels all over the internet if you're inclined. Or you can know nothing about them and elect to label them as "stupid" or "spies" and judge them and their parents from the comfort of your computer.
09:41 PM on 05/20/2010
"Or you can know nothing about them and..."

Judging from the comments below, it's more fun to lob unsubstantiated accusations at them instead.

The Iranians have just let it be known that they have been installing automated detection and defence systems in the back country border regions.

Now, this raises two interesting scenarios.

One, that these actually were innocent tourists who happened to stumble into a sensitive area at exactly the wrong time (which would raise the suspicions of any security service)

Two, that at least one of these 'hikers' was actually an asset of some intelligence agency or other that could see activity in the area, but not be exactly sure of what it was (you can only get so much from distant observation) and figured a closer look was needed.

You may be right. My thought is they were kids on an 'adventure' and knew they were crossing the border, chosing to do it so they could brag about wandering into Iran when they got home. They didn't expect to be caught and thought it would be an afternoon adventure.

How did they get over there and who issues their travel documents. Maybe they should get a copy of the 1000 places to visit before you die.
