From The Associated Press: WASHINGTON — Nearly 1 million General Electric coffee makers sold at Walmart are being recalled after dozens of reports of overheating, smoking, burning and fires.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall Thursday, said Walmart has received 83 complaints about the GE-branded coffee maker, including three reports of minor burns to consumers' bodies.

The reports of property damage include a significant kitchen fire and damage to countertops, cabinets and a wall, said the CPSC. The recall involves about 900,000 GE 12-cup digital coffee makers sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide.

The coffee makers, with the GE logo printed on the base, were sold in white or black from March 2008 through January of this year. The model numbers involved are 169164 and 169165. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using these coffee makers and return them to any Walmart for a full refund.

Model Number: 169165

Model Number: 169164

I am more concerned with the dishes. Everybody turn over your plates, cups, bowls and examine. Then, if U find colored paints decorating the dishes--U better B afraid, very afraid. More than likely lead is in the paint. Even when U eat out @ Chinese restaurants, you need 2 think about the risk from drinking hot, boiling tea out of a dragon cup! Take one and get it tested 4 lead. We already heard about the children's baby food, bibs and toys being lead filled. We know about the dog food that killed many animals. Why do we keep pretending we don't see the dragons and lotus flowers but ignore the fact lead contaminants most likely R in the paint! We need 2 protest and show support for our kids, loved ones and animals. Someone, with organizing skills should get this message out by protesting. I am all in.

Wal-Mart forcing a manufacturer to supply an inferior, defective product?... I'm shocked, SHOCKED I say!

In Wal-mart's defense, they only sell inferior, defective products. Unfortunately, other stores often sell the same products but with different labels on them. Ultimately, the defective product will be mud on the face of the company making said product - in this case GE. But with so many products and little competition (the big eat the small and then gloat, I mean whine, "Too big to fail"), it makes no difference.

It's all about the marketing and getting there first. Bugs can wait, especially once established and competition eliminated.

Not to defend wal-mart; their practices manipulate the market into the lowering of product prices, which in turn means more shortcuts become necessary to make the products to walmart's whims. And when labor costs get only so low, QC invariably takes the hit as well.

In the end, nobody saves and nobody lives better.

That coffee pot never came through GE's doors. GE only license their name to be used on that cheap crap. Shame on GE they used to make really excellent appliances.

The only coffee maker worth owning IMO is a Bunn. The water comes out hot enough to make real coffee and most of it parts are USA made. Mine is over 15 years old

With branding, surely there is nothing more valuable than the name? If GE is wh0ring out its own name for any piece of cheap garbage, that's bad... Still, either "General Electric" or "Generalized Electricity" - if a knock-off name sounds sufficiently similar to the real name, people won't notice. 5 times out of 10. Letting Generalized Electricity company make a product for General Electric to slop its logo on, then it becomes 10 times out of 10.

Not long ago I bought a Sony TV. During my shopping around I found out the cheap brand of Sony was made for Wally world only. The good ones were sold everywhere except Wally world. Care to guess the one built with quality??

False. Often Stores will have an exclusive model made for them by adding or subtracting extra bells and whistles. Best buy, Costco and Sears all do it.So do others. Heck Sears even slaps their own label on it. Kenmore is not a manufacturer of anything.
10:38 AM on 05/21/2010
Except it is part of Wal-Mart's corporate culture to require cheaply-made products from their suppliers, to the point of even pressuring them to move their manufacturing jobs over-seas.

You are 100% correct. Even Asus does with their laptops whittle down or remove features... the core system board is still the same, of course...

Radio Shack/Tandy played the same logo-slapping game as Sears/Kenmore. Back when Radio Shack and Tandy were recognized...

What more could we expect from a company that demands and gets low-low priced from their suppliers, who in turn need to cut corners just to survive. It`s about time wally world was given the boot by those who have any rational thought left.

Anyone who shops there should be held accountable for allowing the raping of this nation with cheap inferior products, that have been manufactured on the cheap, many with child labor.

The problem isn't just Wall World. I made a trip in to the city, hit the high end stores for things I can't get in my backwoods home. Every single one of them had only made in China on their shelves. So instead of paying 10 at WW you would pay 15 at the high end store for the same thing.

I had a conversation with one of those stores. I asked why I would buy made in China at their store and pay more for it there when it was so easily available else where for less. I told them I expected better from them that that was the reason I went there in the first place.

There are no products being made for the middle class any more. They are all crap throw away out of china. If you don't buy a Viking stove chances are the other brand you do buy was made in China.

GE is a multi-national company which forgot its American roots long ago. Actually it's the largest company in the world. So why is their stuff crap?

The way Wal-Mart keeps prices low is to buy overseas and buy as cheaply as possible. While it might have a GE logo, it was built to Wal-Mart's specifications by foreign companies that couldn't care less whether we live or die. It's all business to them.

Have yet to make a purchase in Wal-Mart myself. Just throwing my money away on reliable consumer goods.

They must have used the same electrical components as those in the Mr. Coffee products because straight out of the box once plugged in and turned on the smell of ozone permeated the air.

And yes, it was made in China. All small electrical kitchen appliances come out of China. Don't buy them. Go to a junk store and buy an old non electric percolator. Quit buying the crap they are selling and let them know we won't buy it.

Witch that I am I contact every manufacturer when I find their products are made in China the reason why I did not buy their product and won't until they are made in the USA. I let the stores know too.

Why is this Wal-Mart's recall?

They did not make it, GE did.

Because it was sold exclusively at Walmart. And they, presumably, would like to avoid being named in anymore of the ensuing lawsuits than strictly necessary...
