Hispanics Face Most Discrimination In U.S. (POLL)

ALAN FRAM   05/20/10 04:05 PM ET   AP

Hispanic Discrimination

WASHINGTON — Who's discriminated against in America? More people say Hispanics than blacks or women – and it's far from just Hispanics who feel that way.

An Associated Press-Univision Poll found that 61 percent of people overall said Hispanics face significant discrimination, compared with 52 percent who said blacks do and 50 percent who said women.

The survey also underscored how perceptions of prejudice can vary by ethnicity. While 81 percent of Latinos said Hispanics confront a lot or some discrimination, a smaller but still substantial 59 percent of non-Hispanics said so.

It is not unusual for members of a group to feel they face more prejudice. In this survey, that was especially true when people were asked about "a lot" of discrimination. Fifty-five percent of Hispanics but only 24 percent of non-Hispanics said Hispanics encounter that.

"I see it in people's faces, in the way they react," said Raymond Angulo, 66, a Mexican-born U.S. citizen and retiree from Pico Rivera, Calif. "It's gotten somewhat better, but it's still there. I feel like it's never going away."

However, Jason Welty, a lawn care specialist in Indianapolis who is not Hispanic, said he has seen little evidence of the problem despite working frequently with Hispanics.

"They're treated by most of our clients and the people we work with just like anybody else," said Welty, 30.

The AP-Univision Poll compiled the views of 901 Hispanics, which were compared with the results of a separate AP-GfK survey of the general population.

Attention on whether Latinos face unfair treatment has intensified since last month, when Arizona enacted a law requiring local police to ascertain the citizenship of people they suspect of being in the U.S. illegally.

President Barack Obama called the statute "misdirected" Wednesday at a joint news conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, and he said the Justice Department will soon complete a review of whether it violates civil rights laws. But others have rallied behind the statute as a needed step with an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Lisa Navarrete, vice president of the National Council of La Raza, the Latino advocacy organization, said the poll's findings suggest a silver lining in the country's often bitter debate over immigration.

"For a lot of people, regardless of how they feel about what we should do about immigration, they're recognizing that this community has been singled out and targeted," Navarrete said.

About 40 percent of the Hispanics in the survey said they had experienced much discrimination personally – including just 13 percent who said they had dealt with it a lot.

"I was discriminated against, 'You're just a dumb Mexican,'" said Ric J. Romero, 56, a retiree in Albuquerque, N.M., who said he traces his family's origins to Spain, not Mexico. "Yes, there is still very heavy discrimination."

But Sabino Infante, 62, a college admissions counselor from Hesperia, Calif., said he has never experienced the problem. Infante, who is originally from Mexico, attributed the higher perceptions of prejudice by Hispanics than non-Hispanics to some people having "a chip on their shoulder, an attitude."

Among Hispanics, women are more likely than men to say Latinos suffer discrimination. In addition, Hispanics from cities and rural areas are more likely than those from the suburbs to say Latinos face a lot of prejudice.

Matilde Martinez, 59, a Puerto Rican-born New Yorker, said she believes Mexican immigrants face much mistreatment.

"It causes me a lot of pain," she said in an interview conducted in Spanish. "These people come to work and they do work that the Americans won't do for the little pay they get."

There also are partisan differences. Fifty-five percent of Hispanic Democrats and 38 percent of Hispanic Republicans say there is a lot of discrimination against Hispanics, and Hispanic Democrats are more likely than those in the GOP to say they have personally been affected.

Hispanics in the poll perceived discrimination against other groups a bit more often than non-Hispanics did.

Fifty-seven percent of Latinos and 50 percent of non-Hispanics said blacks are discriminated against. Fifty-eight percent of Hispanics and 48 percent of others said they had observed discrimination against women.

The AP-Univision Poll was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media from May 7-12. It involved landline and cell phone interviews with 901 Hispanic adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5.3 percentage points.

The findings were compared to a separate AP-GfK poll of 1,002 adults from the general population, also by GfK Roper. It involved cell and landline interviews conducted from May 7-11, and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

How can any minority group not feel bias when Democrats and the liberal main scream media keep telling them they should. The race template is only alive today because those on the left extract their political power from it, and the media is stuck in a civil rights mindset that won't go away until the old media is gone.

A victim's mindset is a slippery slope. It is the lazy person's way out of the natural struggle to assimilate. Any Latino immigrating to this country will be treated FAR better than any Latino immigrating to any other country... even their home country for many. They have absolutely nothing unique keeping them from achieving higher prosperity other than their own capabilities, determination and work ethic. Of course, the less they accept American culture and refuse to learn to communicate in English, the more they will feel bias. It is the same for anyone migrating to another country.

How about those 36,000 immigrants in the USA military fighting your wars and paying taxes for the USA at the same time in Iraq and Afganistan and all over the world with no citizenship papers yet since Iraq War I brought to you courtesy of your Republican politicians in office in 2010.

USA wants immigration reform except for the 36,000 USA military they happily have allowed them to enlist in the US military and are fighting the wars for the USA in Afganistan and Irag and other places on the planet.
Same thing for the Spanish American War, WW I , WWII, Korean War over 3,000 Puerto Ricans killed fighting in the front lines in Korea, Viet Nam. How many of these same immigrants have received their citizenship papers to become American citizens in 2010? They have been waiting to become citizens since the first Iraq war! How about those American facts about Hispanics fighting for you Great Americans in the USA!

I keep hearing that everyone wants Immigration Reform and that the illegals will WILLINGLY return to their country of origin after paying back taxes and fines.

I voted for Pres. Obama and support him in most cases, but on Illegal Immigration we part ways. Who in their right mind actually believe that these millions and millions of people whe came into this country unlawfully will actually willingly pay ANY taxes or ANY fines and leave, seriously they snuck into this country had their Anchor Children now they are going to do the right think.

This idea is totally Ludicrous!! in regards to discrimination, there will always be a large group of bigots in this country, But I believe that MOST Americans are so disgusted and completely fed up with the illegal invasion that has been allowed to continue that unfortunately those Americans of Latino heritage often times get grouped with the illegals. Which is completely wrong.

I know what you mean why would anyone unwilling to wait their turn to get in legally now go to the back of the line, pay fines, and pay taxes for the opportunity to get where they already are. I must look like I have zippy the fool tattooed on my forehead and that I'll believe anything. Well I don't, and I don't. The government will say anything to apease me then they will do anything to shaft me. I'm done believing they have any will to enforce the most basic immigration laws. In fact the oil spill is a great allegory for our immigration laws, illegal immigrants, and the American public. The spill is rapidly expanding, the regulators have done nothing to stop the oil industry and protect the American public, and Washington is posturing while it all goes down. The American public will probably be left with the bill, though we continue to get promises of more rigorous oversight and it will never happen again. Is any of this sounding familiar, because it is the only way our government (every stinking party) knows how to operate.

25 years ago when I was a little carpenter, drywall companies started going out of business because they couldn't compete with companies who hired cheap illegal drywallers. The only trade that is not now dominated by illegals/hispanics is electrical.
At least 75% of plaster, plumbing, concrete and carpentry jobs are held by hispanics in SoCal.
Picking crops, etc are merely "gateway" jobs until they become established in a network, and then move on to jobs that Americans DO want.
For every 100,000 jobs that illegals are doing in America, there are 100,000 unemployed American citizens who would LOVE to have them.

The only thing this poll shows is that the media has been successful in pushing their agenda. They have long tried to make the argument that blacks have successfully assimilated, even though the Brandeis Study shows blacks will NEVER catch up to whites in terms of personal wealth and we have actually had our wages and wealth driven down further. And as I keep stating Hispanics will soon see the benefit in the white designation the Census and government has given them, just as the Irish and Italians did. They should have asked the respondents would your family freak out if you married a Black, Hispanic, or Asian and broken those numbers down because that is the real indicator of racial attitudes. Who here honestly thinks that Hispanics would land above blacks among white respondents?

This issue will actually take us back to racism as a number one issue as opposed to any ethnocentrism of any kind.

"If you're white, you're alright!" still holds true. Here's why.

If you look at the entire Hispanic/Latino diaspora, you'd know they all don't look alike; they aren't all "brown" people. Many are as dark-skinned as Wesley Snipes and White as John McCain. You could go to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brazil and find that discrimination is all about skin color, the same as it is in the USA. It's just a little something that was developed during slavery in the Americas and perpetuated throughout history. There are tons of examples if people are actually paying attention.

When I hear these anecdotes of people who claim they've never or hardly experienced discrimination, I have to wonder about their color of their skin. I can say with absolute surety that those experiencing major discrimination are the ones whose skin color is just dark enough to not be considered White. The White Latinos usually get a pass because they're, in effect, White people. Many get exposed by their thick accents or their names, of course. But, for the most part, they get away with it. Master the English language as a White Latino and you'll be right as rain in the USA.

Marco Rubio, Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, Gisele Bunchen, Jeb Bush's kids are not discriminated against nor called names. Eddie Murphy told the story of going shopping in California and a carload of white kids driving by began calling him ni**er. When they realized who he was, they turned around and had nerve enough to ask for an autograph. I guarantee Hispanic stars don't have that shared experience. And anyone remember this stamp that Mexico issued? http://www.seeingblack.com/2005/x080305/mexican_stamp.shtml

Hispanics bring their racist attitudes to this country with them. They don't become sensitized to the plight of black people once they arrive.

Most of what you just said is pure BS. First of all, I very much doubt you know all of their stories first hand to outright say that they aren't or were never discriminated against. Then you speak about Hispanic stars as if you don't know about Cheech Marin, George Lopez, and a slew of other Hispanic stars that have also experienced racism and discrimination.

If you want to make this a "discrimination-swinging" contest, then yes, we, African Americans, have suffered the most throughout history and even to this day.

But, do not assume to believe that Hispanics are somehow the only group that have fallen for the "Hate Dark Skin" movement. Hispanics suffer from this as well. As I've said, they aren't all White. There are many that are just as dark as Wesley Snipes and they catch heavy racism as well.

Even, "black" Italians go through this discrimination. This is not a Hispanic vs Black issue. This is and always will be a White vs Black issue.

I live in the Bronx, pretty much born and raised here. I've lived in Harlem and Washington Heights. I've gone to school with and grown up with Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Blacks, Mexicans, etc etc etc. They're all my friends. I can never think Hispanic vs Black because I am both. I might as well shoot myself.

White American racist attitudes have been adopted across this planet. You're falling for and fueling a culture war that doesn't even truly exist.

Articles such as these are not so subtle attempts to reduce the plight of racial minorities into what I call an oppression competition. Was the massacre of Native Americans worse than chattel slavery/African Holocaust vs. Japanese internment vs. harsh laws against Latinos in AR. What we need to focus on is the fact that at various points in history racial minorities have been targets of discrimination. Discrimination may heighten for certain groups but what remains constant is that ALL racial minorities continue to be discriminated against and the relative advantage of white males and often white females (depending on what factor we're talking about) remains the same. I would welcome an article that discusses this more critically.

One of the problems I see that might foster this discrimination is the way that a lot of Hispanic/Americans seem to go out of their way to speak Spanish in public. The times I've been in places like Walmart and I see Hispanic families talking to each other in Spanish, even though the kids are young and had to have been born and raised here, it just irritates me to no end. In my mind they come across as not wanting to assimilate and be fully American with English being the spoken language. And I'm sick and tired of being asked if I want to transact in English or Spanish at an ATM.

Thank you for being honest. Sincerely. While it bothers me not in the slightest that Spanish is spoken freely and loudly in public (and I might actually enjoy it) I have seen similar types of feelings in members of my family. Brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, parents...not all of them, and not always either, but it seems to be growing among them. I want to quell it now so it doesn't grow because if we pulled this anger together and directed it toward those who are truly f*n our country up, i.e. those at the high-end of town, we could actually achieve some results. Whereas now we are just fighting among ourselves.
09:16 PM on 05/22/2010
That is funny, why have I not seen any restaurents, that say no Mexicans, or water fountains that say mexicans, and another water fountain that says others? Because a vast number of people in the USA want the immigration laws enforced, now this group cries that they are the most disriminated group. Seems very funny to that, there is not any where one can go, at least in CA, where this group outnumbers every other group. Somehow the accusation does not match the truth. That is not to say the discrimination does not exist, it does exist, but when a group is becoming the majority, you can't cry discrimination. Simple solution, if the feds refuse to uphold the immigration laws, how about each state passing their own immigation laws that mirror the federal laws, then the feds should not be able to take the states to court...if it were only that easy.

Actually it is often the majority that is discriminated against (Blacks in South Africa, Blacks in the South, Sunni's and Kurds in Iraq, etc.). Discrimination and oppression is the only way for the minority to get and retain power. As such it's not so much about someone's status as majority or minority, it's about whether they have power in their society. Hispanics may one day be the majority in this country, but that wont change a long history of racism in this country not to mention the deep xenophobia that many Americans feel right now. Those feelings (along with institutional and systematic racism) give whites a HUGE amount of power compared to hispanics (both citizens and non-citizens).

I think what most people fear (and rightly so, in my opinion) is that antagonistic laws against non-citizens will lead to profiling of those of similar origin (hispanics), which will lead to discrimination. I think this Poll suggests that we are seeing exactly that. So, "crying discrimination" isn't a good analogy. It's more like yelling "fire" to alert people of impending danger.

Perhaps it is because there are so many and so many are illegally here with the thoughts that they deserve all the rights that this country offers. That seems alittle over the top, doesn't it? If they come legally and join this country...they are not disciminated against anymore than any of the others.

It's as simple as this: When someone points a we@p0n at you, you have the right to defend yourself. That is what the police did. When someone is walking along minding their own business, there is no immediate discernible thre@t to you. The officer did not k!// the woman for not answering census questions.
