Rand Paul: Obama Sounds 'Un-American' For Criticizing BP Over Gulf Oil Spill (VIDEO)

First Posted: 05/21/10 10:18 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET

In attempting to close the book on his controversial statements about the scope of the Civil Rights Act, Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul invited another round of intrigue and critique on an entirely unrelated front.

The Tea Party favorite, in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday morning, accused the Obama administration of being too tough on BP -- the oil company directly responsible for the massive spill in the Gulf.

"What I don't like from the president's administration is this sort of 'I'll put my boot heel on the throat of BP.' I think that sounds really un-American in his criticism of business," he said. "I've heard nothing from BP about not paying for the spill. And I think it's part of this sort of blame game society in the sense that it's always got to be someone's fault instead of the fact that sometimes accidents happen."

From a sheer political standpoint, defending an oil company that has caused a massive amount of economic and environmental damage along America's coast seems like a tricky proposition -- even for a candidate from a landlocked state. (Though at least two Kentucky residents have sued the oil company over the current spill).

Even BP itself wouldn't go as far as Paul, declining to comment on its relationship with the Obama administration except to say, through spokesperson Mark Salt, that it continues "to work with the government on every aspect of the response."

Substantively, Paul seems to be arguing that sharper regulatory oversight, or legislation that raises BP's liability cap, are both redundant. BP, after all, has pledged to make full payments. And as for future spills, well, "accidents happen."

It's an element of libertarianism that may be ideologically pure but probably doesn't prove all that comforting for those affected by the spill -- or, for that matter, the national Republican Party. On Thursday, GOP officials largely skirted the issue of Paul's controversial interpretation of the Civil Rights Act. In perhaps the comment that came closest to candor, National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman John Cornyn (R-Tex.) insisted that "Rand Paul, like every new candidate, is going to get better."

Candidates, Cornyn added, in an interview with Bloomberg's Al Hunt, "make mistakes and they misspeak."

As for the oil spill remarks, Paul hasn't taken much, if any, money from the oil and gas industry during his run for the Senate (under $8,000 total, according to Center for Responsive Politics). But it should be noted that BP does have major operations in his state.

"Our aluminium business is a non-integrated producer and marketer of rolled aluminium products, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, US. Production facilities are located in Logan County, Kentucky, and are jointly owned with Novelis," reads the company's 2009 annual report. "The primary activity of our aluminium business is the supply of aluminium coil to the beverage can business, which it manufactures primarily from recycled aluminium."

Hey you moderating this post! How you doing? The featured comments that you put are brilliant. A comment saying that Rand Paul's name is similar to Aryan and then "Ouk Fou"? You're very dignified,...bravo. If these arguments from either side were the most substantive and pertinent that you could find, then god bless you!

I like the Paul family because they stand up for what they believe (Even if you don't agree). Corporations can't stand them which has always been a positive in my book. Ron and Rand stand firm on many issue correctly while Dems play a false middle that helps no one (See Clinton in the 90s and Obama now). Stop making an issue of this. The Democrat will not win in Kentucky and Rand is a better choice anyway. Is his criticism of Obama legitimate? Not really! But, I guarantee Rand does not want public money being used to pay for the clean up.

P.S. Also, why do people who have political integrity and stand up for what they believe considered "crackpots?" Why do so many people on this website glorify political speech even if it is filled with lies and distortions. I don't get it. Wouldn't you rather have a politician who votes how he believes or some smoother talker who does the opposite of what he says. I guess Dems like the smooth talking guy. I have a broken down 1975 Ford Mustang for anyone here. Because it is a Mustang, it is the highest quality car. Anybody want to give me 5 grand?

I'm pretty sure corporations like the Paul family, seeing as how both Rand and Ron generally take a stance of "business do no wrong".

it couldn't matter less what any of these jokers say, because the fat lady just walked out onto the stage and she ain't going to sing the star spangled banner......but rather she's going to ring the "escape now" gong as the coastal water ways become contaminated and people run for the northern borderCanada) and give the deeds to their properties to the banks.....to the banks.....and the dominos start to fall anew.......la fin

BP helped finance Curious George's run for president. Smell a rat? This is just another way the Obama administration will place people into FEMA's concentration camps. Youtube guillotines in America, Youtube FEMA CASKETS. IMPEACH OBAMA NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE! THIS WAS ALL PLANNED BY CURIOUS GEORGE AND HIS ADMINISTRATION.

Atta boy. When the lights shine on ya, and ya end up looking like a fewl and a nu t, the first thing you do is - you guessed it - CRITICIZE OR BLAME SOMEONE ELSE.

IF rand paul wants to hear and see what UNAmerican and a nu t looks AND sounds like, he only needs to playback videos of himself in the past week. Good lawd where does these people come from, and from what planet?!

He doesn't seem to understand what a horror he sounds like. Oh the repubs, wingers and baggers I'm sure, are so very proud. Rarely do you get the chance to see someone win and lost at the same time.

Watch and share this video! Important stuff starts at 1:50. The narrator uses foul language to mimic the oil guys who sit through the class, if they actually attend, and then go drinking.

BP sent everyone except the oil rig guys to booming school. Guess who's laying the booms in the gulf? The oil rig folks! Here's a link to an article with photos pretty much validating her point that the booms are laid wrong.

'Accidents Happen.' Yes they do Dr. Paul. Let's say while you were operating on a patient and your surgical instrument failed to perform as per the promise of its specifications. Do you simply tell your patient - oops!!! accidents happen.

I wonder if you carry liability insurance or medical mal-practice insurance for your medical practice or do you simply go by - accidents happen.

Sir, you are very naive for the real world - I wonder how you are going to form public policy as a Senator - I don't care which political party you represent.

Good point, MD. If accidents are going to happen, why bother taking any precautions at all?

Maddow shows her true colors as a corporatist hack for GE. Mr Paul's stand on civil liberties is as good as it gets. Clearly he's being targeted because he's an anti-corporatist. The corridors of power are freaked because their boy got smashed in Tuesday's election. Good that voters are waking up ..

How did you get that Paul was "anti-corporatist" from his stance of defending BP? He said those words. And, it's a stretch to say Maddow is a corporatist because she was astute enough to see the gigantic piece of rope Paul hung himself with.

I think that a small percentage, you included, are sleep walking, and vote for nightmare candidates---laughing stocks, unserious pretenders to high office. Anticorporist? You got your label WRONG! He is NOT an anticorporist. More for the corporation he is. You dind'nt know this? It shows.
