Egypt Mummies

CAIRO — Archeologists have unearthed 57 ancient Egyptian tombs, most of which hold an ornately painted wooden sarcophagus with a mummy inside, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities said Sunday.

The oldest tombs date back to around 2750 B.C. during the period of Egypt's first and second dynasties, the council said in a statement. Twelve of the tombs belong the 18th dynasty which ruled Egypt during the second millennium B.C.

The discovery throws new light on Egypt's ancient religions, the council said.

Egypt's archaeology chief, Zahi Hawass, said the mummies dating to the 18th dynasty are covered in linen decorated with religious texts from the Book of the Dead and scenes featuring ancient Egyptian deities.

Abdel Rahman El-Aydi, head of the archaeological mission that made the discovery, said some of the tombs are decorated with religious texts that ancient Egyptians believed would help the deceased to cross through the underworld.

El-Aydi said one of the oldest tombs is almost completely intact, with all of its funerary equipment and a wooden sarcophagus containing a mummy wrapped in linen.

In 31 tombs dating to around 2030-1840 B.C, archeologists discovered scenes of different ancient Egyptian deities, such as the falcon-headed Horus, Hathor, Khnum and Amun, decorating some of the tombs.

The council said the findings were unearthed at Lahoun, in Fayoum, some 70 miles (100 kilometers) south of Cairo.

Last year, some 53 stone tombs dating back to various ancient periods were found in the area.

My new hybrid car runs on electric for the first 40 miles then switches over to mummy power. Those mummies really burn well and get me to the Olive Garden in no time. Fill 'er up with extra Tutankhamen please!

Sorry for the typo - The book is "The 12th PLANET" not The 12th Plant (Duh!).

An extremely important discovery; can't wait for the official archaeology reports! Everyone should be reading "The 12th Plant" written by the exceedingly brilliant scholar Zecharia Sitchin, one of only a handful of individuals worldwide who can decipher the ancient Sumerian language. This book is heavyweight scholarship, but it will blow your mind.

I won't deny that he is interesting, and his linguistic skills are top notch, but his ideas and theory's are a bit, how do I put this delicately, bat siht crazy. The Nephilim make for powerful science fiction and this story like many religious stories is near impossible to disprove and simultaneously fascinating.
Zecharia has blurred the lines between intelligence and imagination.
And if it's true; then I suggest we all stock up on slings and rocks now!

I'm all for science...but it seems a bit weird that scientist can just dig up graves, regardless of the scenario(s). I mean it wasn't meant to act as a time capsule.

Archaeologists can't just dig up graves. They get permits. In Egypt, for the longest time, they issued permits to European archaeologists.

Egypt has relatively recently taken over most excavations in their own country. They are digging up their own dead.

So?
09:20 AM on 05/24/2010
That's exactly what they are. I for one would love to be mummified and to have my body dug up 4000 years from now so that someone could learn something of human culture as we have from past archaeological finds.

When I die I want to be cremated. I don't want any archaeologist digging up my corpse in 3000 years.
01:57 AM on 05/24/2010
I want to be cremated too. Immediately. Not because of 3000 years from now. I don't want people looking at my corpse at all!
09:23 AM on 05/24/2010
Why? Are you ashamed of you? Or do you find it disgusting that someone should have to gaze upon dead flesh? I'm not trying to be rude or mean, I am only curious.

I hope I am laid to ashes. That is all I need to worry about is someone digging me up after I am gone.

Why do obituaries show the deceased's photos when they were alive. Wouldn't it be more realistic to show them after they passed. My first reaction is always "she doesn't look dead to me!"
