Colleges That WON'T Raise Tuition (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 05/24/10 12:53 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET

While scores of schools hike their tuition 5, 9.5 and even 10 percent, some colleges promise incoming freshmen that they'll hold their rates steady.

U.S. News and World Report culled data from college websites and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and found 11 colleges that pledge not to increase tuition. Some conditions apply, but for the most part, freshmen at these schools will pay the same price for their education each year.

See the full list here.

My tuition at CSU Chico as $1035/semester for four years. I agreed to do a focus group that promised to keep my tuition at the rate at which it had started Freshman year, as long as I showed up once a year for pizza and maintained a 3.0. (1998-2002)

However, my brother, at CSU Chico from 2005 to 2010, paid about $1100/semester his first year, increasing each year until this one at $1500/semester.

In addition, my professors were AWESOME; they knew what kind of students most of us were--blue collar kids--and reuired texts were mainly paperbacks, compilations and journal articles, instead of ridiculously expensive, poorly written texts.

In this way, we got the added bonus of reading the source material.

BOOYEAH Ivy League. You guys are smart. But we work hard AND we're smart.

GW being on this list is a joke

Cleary University in Michigan is on the original list from U.S. News and World Report and has guaranteed (since 2000) to not raise students' tuition if they remain continuously enrolled at Cleary. Tuition also includes all textbooks and all fees (i.e. parking, graduation, lab, student, registration, etc.).

BS. I go to CU (University of Colorado at Boulder) and my tuition was raised this year. Oh wait, it's because I'm in-state, god forbid the HuffPost includes that (there's a lot of in-state, out-of-state tension across CO universities).

That was indeed mentioned.

People don't realize that although it's one of the most expensive, GW has the largest financial aid pool in the country. As a GW student, I can honestly say it's worth every penny to attend.

The University I graduated from.. hasn't raised tuition rates in 5 years, and its holding steady at 8k a year. The just raised room and board, to get the funds to build a new dorm that is long needed.

Considering this school is in DC, and has extremely personalized classes.. (Me, two other students and the teacher! For International Econ) Its a shame that majority of the people who are reading this comment cannot attend this school, not due to intelligence level or income level... but because they can hear!

Not necessarily.

It all depends.. most colleges and universities are "not for profit", like you state schools and major universities, which means they depend on donations beyond tuition to keep the school and programs running. You have to remember they have to pay for land, maintenance of building, teachers, staff, sports, and most importantly scholarships. Its amazing how much money is needed, and most major universities have an endowment fund to save for the future.. in case of a huge disaster.. they will be covered, i.e. lawsuits..

I think MissVirginiaVoter is talking about the access of easy credits for student loans which gave (and still gives) colleges an incentive to spend even more money than last years. In turn, which leads to tuition price hikes.

I wonder what the University of Colorado's out of state tuition is. Whew. It is one of the prettiest state colleges around tho. That natural sandstone is very nice. It has always been expensive...well if you were out of state it was. Colleges like that tend to attract affluent out of staters and that tuition really helps the state with in state tuition. Wonder if that is the story now.
06:34 PM on 05/24/2010
That was certainly the case when I was there about 4 years ago. It was a wonderful place to go to school, and the instate tuition was fairly reasonable. Boulder is certainly not a cheap place to live, however.

It's about 20 g for out of state, 7 g for in state (as of next year it will go above 6 g).

This year in-state tuition, while out-of-state tuition (with kids severely under represented in the engineering school, etc.) was put on lock. Really? Thanks CU Board of Regents. Not. Especially while there's for profit companies running around buying privileged out of staters the chance to apply for in state tuition. All while CO residents hurt in-state students chances to go to school by slashing budgets. It's really infuriating.

There are more than 7, I think Mizzu and UMSL froze tuition as well. BUT... and there is always a BUT... FEEs Student charges, and other college related charges are going through the roof to offset the tuition loss of income freezes. See, it always works out for them.

Um, wow? 7 colleges, what an awesome list!

When will students finally realize that the value of a four year undergraduate degree is almost never worth the outrageous price set by most private/out-of-state universities?

Go to the best in-state college available to you. Then use your savings to go to a pricier grad school if you'd like. You will save money and (presumably) get a better return on your investment in grad school.

I tend to agree,of course unless it's an Ivy !! A really good grad school is where it's at, as long as those grades are near perfect !!

ivy doesnt mean having great grades. Ivy greed degree means being in part of the club, and getting special treatment because of it. Ivy Greed degree means youve been trained in the way of the Greed.

I still say, espicially if you want to be a lawyer, turn down the ivy for a full ride. I got into Cornell, turned it down to Howard for the full ride. The grad degree is what makes the money.
