(AP) SAO PAULO - A Polish priest accused of sexually abusing a former altar boy in Rio de Janeiro and turning his parish home into an "erotic dungeon" has surrendered and is now in police custody, a public safety official said Saturday.

State prosecutors have accused Marcin Michael Strachanowski of handcuffing the 16-year-old former altar boy to a bed three years ago in the parish house where the priest lived and threatening to kill the youth if he spoke of the abuse.

Strachanowski arrived at a police station Friday night, said a spokesman for Rio's state public security department. He spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with departmental policy. Images published in Brazilian newspapers showed Strachanowski being driven away in a police car.

The 44-year-old priest was suspended from duties after the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro learned that a judge had issued an order Thursday for his arrest.

The archdiocese issued a statement Friday announcing the suspension and expressing regret over the alleged abuse.

Judge Alexandre Abrahao Dias said that investigators found "erotic material sent to the victim via Internet to seduce him" and that the priest also took other youths to the parish house, "which he converted into a kind of erotic dungeon where he submitted them, often with the use of handcuffs, to orgies."

Lawyers representing the priest did not immediately return a telephone message left Friday afternoon seeking comment. The phone number for the lawyers went unanswered on Saturday. The judge said that he was ordering the priest detained in part because he feared Strachanowski might try to flee from Brazil.

Church officials said that Strachanowski also faces a canonical legal process by an ecclesiastical tribunal, but they declined to provide additional information about the priest, such as how long he has been in Brazil or his work history with the Church.

The security department spokesman said the priest submitted a document in Polish as evidence that he is a college graduate, which could allow him to be kept in a lockup with better conditions than most Brazilian jails, which are severely overcrowded and dangerous because they are ruled by hardened gang members. The determination will be made by Brazilian education officials in conjunction with authorities.

Strachanowski's lawyers also have the option of trying to seek his release through the courts next week, the spokesman said.

Sex-abuse scandals involving the Roman Catholic Church have mushroomed around the world recently, and some of the accused priests have surfaced in Brazil, home to more Catholics than any other nation.

Late last month, prosecutors charged the Rev. Jose Afonso with abusing altar boys ranging in age from 12 to 16. Prosecutors said the alleged abuses took place in the city of Franca, in southeastern Sao Paulo state.

Also last month, 83-year-old Monsignor Luiz Marques Barbosa was detained in northeastern Brazil for alleged abuse of at least three boys after being caught on videotape having sex with a former altar boy who was an adult when the video was filmed. Barbosa is under house arrest while authorities investigate. Two other priests in the same archdiocese are also accused of abuses.

The National Conference of Brazilian Bishops announced this month that it plans to craft a manual with guidelines to help bishops prevent child-abuse cases.

A question for Catholics. How do you reconcile going to church, sitting in a pew and tithe to an organization that appears to condone, cover up and refuse to act in a meaningful way against these outrages?

How do they keep sending their kids to Catholic schools? It's absurd. If this evil had been inflicted on children by the Goddard School, there isn't a parent alive who would send their kids to one ever again. Attach religion to it, and people can't think straight anymore. I think parents who continue to place their children in the hands of this organization are negligent. Period.

I just honestly don't understand it at all. Why does religion somehow receive a pass on this stuff - any other organization that had done half of what the RC Church has done would be disbanded and fully prosecuted... and the members of the organization sure as hell wouldn't keep funneling money to it.

I knew things would turn for the worse when the Catholic church chose someone with a name that starts with RAT as the current pope.

It's beyond creepy. What is the Vatican's obsession with sexual abstinance and homosexuality?
Not to mention the whole self-flogging thing.
Gay marriage threatens the very fabric of society? Darn, and I always figured it was the 50% divorce rate or the Vatican doing its best to cover up decades of brutal pedophilia and tens of thousands of lives ruined. Silly me.

I agree. The sad thing is that nothing would have happened if the press had not caught wind of it.

Hurry Pope Ratzinger, send the Swiss Guard into Brazil and rescue your priest so you can redeploy him to another church before this situation causes the Vatican embarassment. The last time I watched the Catholic News Channel I discovered the biggest threat to mankind is gay marriage, so what are these Brazilians complaining about? They have gay people in Brazil who are posing the gravest threat humanity has ever faced, so how dare they imprison a pedophile priest instead of gay adults wishing to enter in a committed relationship. The Catholic Channel made no mention of any threat to mankind by pedophilic preachers, which must be why they keep moving them from parish to parish. Consensual gay relationships between adults= gravest threat to the existence of mankind. Pedophile priests raping little boys = non-issues that detract the Church from saving mankind from gay marriage.

Priesthood is the perfect cover if you are a pedophile. You can do as you wish, and never pay a price for it. I am surprised they are not lining up at the door of the seminary to sign up. Imagine if this was happenening on a regular basis with sports coaches or teachers, we would be screaming for their heads, why are the priests any different? Just like Allah didn't tell those criminals to fly those planes into buildings, God doesn't condone raping kids.

Actually "God" condones whatever a perpetrator needs justification for.

You can justify it in the end..."

Do you know a Catholic Priest?
Do you allow your son anywhere near him?
Do you know a Pedophile?
Are you allowing your son anywhere near one?

based on trends your 13 year old son is much safer if you send him to a gay leather dance bar than if you send him to be an altar boy.

How long before they blame gays again? I get really sick of the church trying to deflect criticism by attacking gay people....it's like the pedophiles are jealous that gays are being accepted in society so they have to hate...I grew up attending catholic school and have alot of respect for the good works of the church, but their constant attacks on the gay community have to stop.

It is odd though how it's always altar boys... Where are the stories about priests going after young girls in the church (or adult women for that matter)?

Jeff, I have just written about how I was molested by a priest. I was 18 and am now a woman, was then just a girl. They don't go after the women because women will screech and holler and somebody will believe them. Young girls and altar boys are not ever believed! It would have been my word against the priest. Nobody would have believed me. I didn't dare tell my parents. Kids still don't tell. Well most of them.

Treboi, they just cannot accept that their man-made "holy" law that priests be celibate is the problem. Nowhere is the Bible does it dictate that those who serve God must be celibate. The Holy Roman Church will do anything, say anything and point to anyone, including the gays, except admit that priests live unnatural lives. So the young, male and female, become their prey. I once wrote about my experience about being molested by a Catholic priest and the sub-editor entitled it "Prey for a Priest". Quite apt - and clever.

At what age should you began warning your children of sexual predators, is it enough to tell them to stay away from strangers? How much information should you give them, I dont think its right to send kids out into a dangerous world without truthfully and honest knowledge of the dangers that await them. I mean at what age do you really them what could happen to them and in how much detail?

Any parent who sends their kids to hang out with priests need to be locked up. Why do parents keep serving their kids up?? That doesn't make o a good Catholic, it makes you an accomplice.

Tell them. You have to or you will risk your children being hurt. Then test them. use friends to try to lure your children to their car using the typical ploys, lost puppy, free candy or toys, your mom told me to pick you up, and see if they have learned their lessons. Also use different forms of communication, the phone, internet, vehicle, no vehicle, etc. You kids will fail your tests at first, but they will learn and will feel quite proud of themselves when they are able to see through the cons. You need to also have your child practice standing up for their own privacy with people they know and trust. These days aren't any worse than any other time, but we are talking openly about it, therefore we have an opportunity to prevent these tragedies that in days of old were hushed or ignored.

If it was Mr Joe down the block, most parents wouldn't allow their kids anywhere near him. But because he wears a collar and claims to know God, he gets a pass??? WTF?????
