Featured Doer: Peter Gelb

In a way, Peter Gelb has come full circle. He worked as an usher at the Metropolitan Opera in his teenage years. Nearly four years ago, he was appointed as the Met's 16th general manager.

He's both a traditionalist and a modernist. Under his tenure, the Met -- America's largest classical music organization -- has undergone a technological transformation, exposing younger and newer audiences to premiere opera productions. In late 2006, Gelb unveiled the award winning "The Met: Live in HD," a series of live performances shown in high definition in theaters across six continents, selling five million tickets.
