First Posted: 05/25/10 02:50 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET

Fire ripped through the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society last week, claiming the lives of 15 cats, and leaving two dozen other animals suffering from symptoms of smoke inhalation.

Touched by the tragedy, community members are coming forward with donations to help care for the animals and rebuild the destroyed shelter. Two local children, Billie and Sofia, raised money selling lemonade and cupcakes to donate to the shelter.

KGO-TV reports from Berkeley.

I wish more kids would do things like this. Very heartwarming. Thank you, kids!

Unfortunately, the Huffington Post has confused the local, independent Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society with The Humane Society of the United States and your donation links below the story are for HSUS instead of BEBHS! The BEBHS website with donation links is at:

Thank you, Huffington Post for your fast response and changing the links to go to the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society site!

After having a cry over the story of Billy Joe Gregg who severely beat animals at a dairy farm in Ohio, I am pleased to have a good cry over the love and compassion that still exists with some people! My hat's off to these wonderful children and all those who are helping this shelter. These kid's parents also get my vote of thanks for instilling love and community into their children's lives. Bravo!

God bless kids and animals, both of whom have loving hearts. What was the cause of this tragedy?

I lost my cat, Marsha Mello, on Easter Sunday. Still grieving, but starting to make plans about adopting a new feline. Time to visit the local shelter again ...
