Conklin Dairy Farms Video Shows Dairy Cows Being Violently Abused, Says Mercy For Animals (VIDEO)

Conklin Dairy Farm Abuse

CLEVELAND (AP/Huffington Post)-- An animal welfare group said Tuesday that a graphic video it secretly recorded shows workers at a dairy farm beating cows with crowbars, stabbing them with pitchforks and punching them in their heads.

The video was recorded in an undercover investigation at Conklin Dairy Farms Inc., said Mercy For Animals, a not-for-profit group that publicizes what it calls cruel practices in the dairy, meat and egg industries and promotes a vegan diet.

The video shows workers at the federally-subsidized farm holding down newborn calves and stomping on their heads. It shows one worker wiring a cow's nose to a metal bar near the ground and repeatedly beating it with another bar while it bleeds.

Conklin Dairy Farms, a fourth-generation family operation based in Plain City, said it takes the care of its cows and calves very seriously and had reviewed the video.

"The video shows animal care that is clearly inconsistent with the high standards we set for our farm and its workers, and we find the specific mistreatment shown on the video to be reprehensible and unacceptable," Gary Conklin, of Conklin Dairy Cattle Sales LLC, said Tuesday night in an e-mailed statement. "We will not condone animal abuse on our farm."

The company said it would interview its farm workers and anyone found to have willfully abused the cows or calves would be fired.

Since 1995, Conklin Dairy Farms has received almost $36,000 in federal farm subsidies, according to a database of farm subsidies maintained by the Environmental Working Group. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture gave Conklin Farms almost $12,000.

Last year, Mercy For Animals, which is based in Chicago, released a video showing workers at an Iowa egg hatchery tossing male chicks into a grinder. Industry groups said such instantaneous euthanasia was a common practice because male chicks can't lay eggs or be raised quickly enough to be sold for meat.

Mercy For Animals' executive director, Nathan Runkle, said the cow video was shot between April 28 and Sunday by an undercover worker at the dairy, about 25 miles northwest of Columbus. He said the documented abuse violates Ohio's anti-animal cruelty statute.

In 2009, Ohio voters passed a state constitutional amendment that authorized the creation of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. The board is currently soliciting comments, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Mercy For Animals presented the video and the evidence it collected to the prosecutor's office in Marysville. The prosecutor's office didn't respond to a request for comment late Tuesday.

Let's be responsible here and mention that the main villain of the video, Gregg, did face charges. Although it's despicable the way Conklin (if that is him) kicked the downer, let's not act as though no one was held accountable for this horrible abuse.

This is awful. I will never buy anything from anyone who is supplied by Conklin farms. But my experience with the creameries here in Virginia is that they are loving towards their animals. They take extraordinary care of their herds and some suffer emotionally when a cow is in pain and they can't immediately alleviate it, as in cases of acute mastitis.

None of them could watch this go on for A MONTH and not do anything to stop it.

If someone aired footage taken over a month of a man beating a child or a mother the way he beat on cows and calves here, we would not be touting the footage as courageous. The guy taking the video would be facing charges here. I can't believe the callousness of people who say they care about animals. I could not stand by and not even tell them to stop.

Cows get a safe, sheltered life at good farms, and abused cows get stress-related diseases, are more prone to infections, and produce poor quality milk. It is in everybody's interests, especially the cows, to buy milk from quality, caring dairies. Not starve them out so only people with no choices buy or sell milk.

This was the final straw for me. I've stopped eating beef entirely since I saw this video. Very upsetting.

He won't get in any trouble! He'll just get a fine and be back at work in no time beating and abusing. I bet no prison time will get handed out!

America has two sets of laws and he's on that side that gets away with everything with no real repercussions. Free to repeat again and again.........

What is the other set of laws?

You know animals may not be as educated or smart as human beings, but they do have feelings and feel pain just like we do! Stop the abuse now before it’s to late!

My question is where did these people come from and why are they still alive?
Outrageous is the mild word for this type of animal abuse. Where is the USDA in all of this? It’s really time to support harsh prosecution procedures against the abusers and the government entities who are allowing this! Why does it take a private source to capture this horrible type of animal abuse? I say write your legislator and comp-lain that our state and government officials are NOT doing their jobs and need to be replaced with honest accountable officials. I do believe in karma, so the so-called human beings caught on tape including the owners advocating this abuse will get their just reward someday as well!

The video was extremely disturbing. I hope Gary Conklin is proud of himself and his workers.

I wonder what would be a good punishment for those disgusting excuses for human beings. That was one of the most disturbing things I have seen, the first half anyway didn't finish watching. Animals penned so they can't even move. Those men should be prosecuted after being trampled by cattle.

I wonder if those "men" would so brutally attack an animal with teeth or claws, that could fight back.

I was raised on a dairy farm....absolutely NO EXCUSE for treating any of these cows ESPECIALLY the calves, like this...NONE!
And they laugh and boast about it!
These so called "men" should be put in the same positions... thrown down, held down, stabbed with pitchforks, beaten with crowbars, and pummeled on the face with their necks twisted backwards...the same things they subjected these animals to.
The calves did nothing wrong, and the cows don't understand what's going on. None can defend themselves or fight back.
These men should be severely punished and never be around animals again. I would also venture that their children should be questioned about child abuse...someone who loses their temper that easily and abuses animals, has a high chance of abusing their wife and children when they get angry.
Sorry excuses for humans.

Thank you. Those gentle animals give us so much, to be kind to them should not be so difficult.
06:30 AM on 07/06/2010
As a small family farm it is inconceivable to us that the farm owners did not have any idea that this abuse was going on. This sick human being should be locked in the animal stalls and beaten with the same methods he used against the defenseless animals he tortured.
05:53 PM on 07/06/2010
Thank you! Those are my sentiments exactly. Can we please lock these animal abusers in those tiny stalls that they can't turn around in and torture them? I hope the law changes in Ohio and that these innocent animals are protected. And I really hope they go to jail for years and experience real pain in there.

The grand jury in Ohio should be ashamed for not indicting Conklin. I pity the people of Ohio with a legal system like this one.

It looks like Gregg has decided to plead not guilty to the 12 animal cruelty charges:
