Hezbollah: We'll Hit Israel Ships In New War

Netanyahu

ZEINA KARAM   05/25/10 06:03 PM ET   AP

BEIRUT — The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah group warned Tuesday that his fighters would attack Israeli ships in the Mediterranean if the Jewish state imposes a sea blockade on Lebanon in any future war.

Hassan Nasrallah said his Iranian-backed group is now capable of destroying any military or commercial ships heading to Israeli ports.

Hezbollah and Israel fought a 34-day war in 2006 during which Israel imposed a sea and air embargo on Lebanon, saying it needed to prevent the guerrillas from being resupplied with weapons.

Nasrallah said Tuesday that Hezbollah now had the capability to inflict as much harm on Israel as it did in Lebanon during the 2006 war.

"In any future war, if you blockade our coasts and ports, all the military, civil and commercial ships heading to ports in occupied Palestine along the Mediterranean will come under Hezbollah rocket attack," Nasrallah said.

Addressing supporters through a video link at a huge rally south of Beirut, Nasrallah repeated past threats that his group would rocket Tel Aviv airport and other strategic targets if Israel's military strikes Lebanese infrastructure as it did in 2006.

He added: "We are capable of targeting, striking and destroying your ships as they head to any port on the coast of occupied Palestine from north to south."

"When the world sees how these ships will be destroyed in the regional waters of occupied Palestine, nobody will dare go there anymore," Nasrallah added.

During the 2006 fighting, Hezbollah slammed about 4,000 rockets into Israel, while Israel bombed the group's strongholds in Lebanon's south and east as well as its headquarters in the suburb of Dahiyeh south of the capital Beirut. The war killed around 1,200 people in Lebanon and 160 in Israel.

Israel also accused Hezbollah of firing an anti-ship cruise missile that hit an Israeli warship in the war, killing four servicemen. The ship's missile detection and deflection system was not on during the attack, apparently because the sailors did not anticipate Hezbollah had such capability.

The ship – one of the most technologically advanced in the Israeli fleet at the time – boasted an array of high-tech missiles and a system for electronically jamming incoming missiles and other threats.

Nasrallah stressed his group did not want a new war but warned Israel it would incur heavy losses in case it starts a new conflict.

The rally held Tuesday marks 10 years since Israeli troops withdrew from a border strip in south Lebanon, ending a 22-year military presence there.

The anniversary coincides with rising tensions in the region over Israeli claims that Hezbollah has acquired Scud missiles from Syria and Iran. Syria has denied supplying the group with weapons, and Nasrallah refused to confirm or deny those claims.

This is what happen when you started everything by stealing lands and denying other people to live in neighborhood...

Let me ask. Was there any Hesbola or Hamas before Israel steal parts of Palestinian lands?

Dear Israel, return the land and be good to your neighbors and we live in peace... That's a very simple thing that we had been asking ever since...

Right in what? To threaten to retaliate if they are again invaded by a foreign power?
In that case you've certainly said they are right enough times.

Israel is not in Lebanon. How do you justify your statement?

Israel has regular overflights into Lebanese airspace with fully-armed military aircraft. The Israelis also often deliberately perform sonic booms using military aircraft over Lebanese towns and villages.

So they said exactly the same as Israel would say if anyone threatened to blockade them.

In fact apologists for the Israeli States actions frequently use the barring of a sea route and not even a blockade as an excuse for one of the innumerable wars the Israeli State started.

Not really very newsworthy but whatever.

The gist of this piece was entirely lost when the title had the "IF" or conditioning phrase omitted from the rest of the statement AND when it was mentioned only after the "we will hit...if" not before...so much for accurate reporting. The guy is using psychological warefare to say If you hit us we will hit you....eye for an eye...in response for Israel " marathon 3 day " of military and civilian drills in preparation for war. Most news in Western media are intentionally shrewdly written in this manner when it comes to good guys vs bad guys in the mideast.

True. Peace-lovers must always support Israeli efforts to bring "peace" in the region, like deploying white phosphorous and cluster bombs in civilian areas. Anything other than slavish agreement to their actions is anti-Semitic.

And tallenreminds me of those old nazi propagandists. No, not the soft spoken, impeccably groomed, blond blue-eyed ones who'd charm the audience hall with their quiet con jobs, the crowd that set things up for him by standing outside spewing every bit of venom they could to get the people going in primed to not react to the more insidious, though less blatant poison the inside man would try and inject.

So sad to mention Hitler when Israel does not face Hezbollah panzer divisions. There is no way Hezbollah can destroy Israel.

My grandma's whole family were exterminated by Nazis. I find mere nasty words associated with a military death machine that took the combined forces and wealth of the British Empire and America to defeat.

You might wish the world to see this as payback for WW2 but That does not give Israel the right to invade as if it is vile words of hatred: listen to Likud. Both sides have their haters. No reason to make war unless you hear your crowds chanting.

Ehud Ohlmert did Hezbollah a big favor when he odered the IDF into action against them in Lebannon. By forcing a stalemate, they could then claim that the mighty IDF was a paper tiger. Now they've decided to gird for another round. Just lovely.

I wonder, has anyone mentioned that Hezbollah won the most votes in the Lebanese election (overall, and amongst Muslims and Christians individually), is part of the government, and that the Lebanese government sees Al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya as a legitimate part of its armed forces?

Somehow, the Israeli internet taskforce always seems to forget about that (and deny it as loudly as they can when someone mentions it)
07:38 PM on 05/26/2010
Hezbollah is a radical islamic fundamentalist organization and a gang of terrorists.

Yet they won Lebanon's elections.

Yes, Israel and Jewish people notice this and consider it.

Your refusal to even consider the reasons that Lebanese people would vote for Hizbollah is the kind of thing that keeps this conflict going. Is it really so hard to understand why people would vote for the ONE organization that is willing to hold the line against Israeli aggression?

Israel has leveled Beirut now multiple times. These campaigns have killed thousands of civilians and casued unimaginable suffering. You wonder why people vote for Hizbollah? Because they know that with or without them, Israel will find a reason to be involved in Lebanese affairs.

Same old BS

"Lebanon's pro-Western coalition declared victory early Monday, as local television stations reported the faction had successfully fended off a serious challenge by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah and its allies to grab the majority in parliament...OTV, the television station of one of Hezbollah's key Christian allies, former army chief Michel Aoun, conceded that the party's candidates who challenged pro-Western competitors in several Christian districts had been defeated, preventing a victory for the Hezbollah coalition...."

For anyone who wants to check what the actual results were, here's a link to the " NDI Final Report on The Lebanese Parliamentary Election" http://qifanabki.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/ndi-lebanese-elections-report-2009.pdf, which contains the vote (not seat) counts.

I'm sorry but if I'm a Palestinian farmer and the Israelis come with soldiers and American made bulldozers to level my home and burn my trees to facilitate their constant expansion I want every weapon available. As for Hezbollah , there are thousands of displaced Palestinians living living in Lebanon who have become, for very understandable reasons, sworn enemies of Israel. Why does it seem that the supporters of Israel, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, or any of the many wars of agression this country has been invloved in, are incapable of empathy. All of those who condone Israeli or U.S. warmongering and greed should wake up tomorrow in Gaza with no running water or electricity, look at their families suffering, and then tell me that they have no desire at all to resist. In my mind, you either fight for your family and your people or you are a coward.

"if I'm a Palestinian farmer and the Israelis come with soldiers and American made bulldozers to level my home and burn my trees to facilitate their constant expansion I want every weapon available"

You and your pesky honesty and logical reasoning. What most anti-peace Zionists rely on is that people won't make that connection. That if you are the dirt poor farmer against a colonizing occupier with one of the most powerful armies in the world, who's best buddies with the most powerful nation in the world, and has one of the world's largest nuclear arsenals...that just maybe you would like a weapon too.
