James O'Keefe, Accomplices Plead Guilty In Landrieu Break-In, Get Probation, Community Service, Light Fines

MARY FOSTER   05/26/10 06:25 PM ET   AP

James Okeefe Sentenced

NEW ORLEANS — Four conservative activists accused of trying to tamper with the phones in Sen. Mary Landrieu's office pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges of entering federal property under false pretenses.

James O'Keefe, 25, famous for wearing a pimp costume in a video that embarrassed the community organizing group ACORN, was sentenced to three years probation, 100 hours of community service and a $1,500 fine.

The FBI has said O'Keefe used his cell phone to try to capture video of two others who posed as telephone repairmen and asked to see the phones at Landrieu's office. O'Keefe has said the group was trying to investigate complaints that constituents calling Landrieu's office couldn't get through to criticize the Democrat's support of a health care reform bill.

Protesters marched in front of Landrieu's office in Baton Rouge last December to criticize her support for the health care legislation and complained they couldn't get through on her office phones. Landrieu said at the time that her office was receiving a high volume of calls and apologized.

O'Keefe told the judge he regretted his actions and apologized for raising security concerns at the federal building. After the hearing, he said he would continue his undercover work.

"What I do is I stand up to power," O'Keefe said. "I expose corruption in the back rooms."

Magistrate Daniel Knowles III sentenced the three other suspects to two years probation, 75 hours of community service and $1,500 fines.

O'Keefe, Stan Dai, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan were arrested Jan. 25 on felony charges, but federal prosecutors later reduced the charges.

Knowles chided the defendants, saying they came from good backgrounds, all had undergraduate degrees or better, and should have used better judgment.

The judge told O'Keefe he was particularly concerned about his role as ringleader.

"One of the things involved in being a journalist is you're going to have to learn to draw the line," Knowles said. "In this instance, you drew it in the wrong spot."

O'Keefe said he would release the results of another such investigation very soon.

"This is about sunlight and we're the going to be the disinfectant," O'Keefe said without answering any questions.

Also, the the team at BigGov.com is now going to have to be VERY VERY careful about their habitutal, hyperbolic and over-reliant (almost meaningless) use of the term "criminal."

After all, despite all their slanderous, libelous and completely fallacious attempts to malign their political targets as "criminal", THE ONLY REAL, PROVEN AND CHARGED CRIMINALS in their narrative are their Star Pupil James OKeeffe and those dumb enough to follow his bad council.

James tried to push falsified “evidence” of serious crimes at ACORN (using doctoring methods more appropriate to the Iranian government, or even to Geobbels... take that Glenn Beck!), and his allegations have proven completely false.

At the end of the day, James and pals are the ONLY convicted criminals on record.

As for his attack on ACORN (and on the impoverished communities they serve), one did not need 5 separate investigations to know that James lied. Just compare the doctored tapes with the undoctored footage, or even with the transcripts.

James was a liar from the get-go... no wonder he refused to interview with almost anyone other than FoxNews (after all, real investigative journalists don’t try to meet with as many outlets as they can, right?)

There are no criminal records (or even criminal evidence) for the likes of KatherineConway Rusself or JuanCarlos Vera, and Okeefe remains the ONLY criminal in this story.
(btw... any retractions from BigGov on Vera’s own record? Of course not.)

I’m still wondering why BigGov et al STILL refuse to discuss the story of Sonny the pimp, or “Edens/Kenyas” tragic life, or the cruel fate of the Salvadoreans, and how that fit into their “sting”...
... not only are these episodes EDITED OUT of the posted tapes, but the producers adamantly refused to address them, even when Mike Stark gave them just that opportunity last fall.

James O”keefe is a convicted criminal, and thanks to his bad advice, so are his “friends”.

This just got you a new fan...#3!!
He should be tried for lying to congress and congress should answer to why they accepted his falsities as truth and will not go back at look at it. I believe it's because they feel like fools, but that's not a good enough reason.

Is there any way for the judge to reverse his decision? He obviously doesn't "regret" his actions if he plans on doing it again. It's not like O.J. could just walk out of the courtroom saying, "yeah, I killed her... can't touch me now!"

If I were the judge, I'd make sure his community service was the nastiest, most grueling job imaginable.

I'm more concerned with the terms of his probation. If he violates probation there's a great chance he'll end up sharing a cell with 'Bubba D. Chickenhawk'....and hopefully it will all be caught on tape.

Seems if he's on probation, he should have a stipulation that prohibits him from playing at dress up "journalism".
Usually you cannot be associated with the type of behavior that got you on probation in the first place.
Hopefully this means at least 3 years of silence from this idi ot.

I tried to find out what the terms were of his probation....but had no luck. Hopefully it will limit his ability to try anymore little stunts like this.

I bet he will keep pushing with the antics until he does actual jail time so he can complain that he is a political prisoner.

His next plan is to malign HUD in Detroit... because, as we all know, impoverished communities in Detroit form such a powerful and threatening cabal (--sarcasm, obviously)

But that is what his stated plan is.

He apparently has some soundbytes that he's mangled into something he thinks will get HUD canned. And, as with ACORN, he’s using them (and the poor communities who rely on them) as a thin proxy for Obama.
Apparently he was getting ready to release that footage when he got busted in NOLA. He claims that he will do so soon (probably, as Breitbart had previously threatened, around election time...)

As someone who is originally from Detroit, I am astounded that anyone could pass through that city and think that HUD is its biggest problem, especially when it is such a lifeline for so many people. .

Its very telling that Okeefe can just ignore all the poverty, the racial gentrification, the harsh economic stratification, the urban disinvestment, the (very open) underground arms trade, the gang/police violence, the impact of the auto industry, etc... just so he can take down HUD.

O'keefe, now not just a proven liar, but a convicted criminal, tried so hard to slander the people at ACORN using falsified "evidence" that has proven to be such after several investigations.

But at the end of the day, the only criminals in this story are Okeefe and the people dumb enough to follow his bad council.

They pled guilty and just get a slap on the wrist, unbelievable.

You can rest assured if a Dem did the same to any GOP member there would've been jail time.

This guy is a liar and should be sued for the fake video he made since no one can say if in context he told the employees a story like it was being filmed as a stunt or for a comedy show or who knows, but this guy never told the truth about the Acorn incident.

He only got caught on this one.

He is obviously a very devious person who in spite of pleading guilty gets no real punishment.

Maybe O'Keefe has been studying John Stossel! This perp in a perfect world would get some jail time to impress the importance of consequences.

No jail time sends the message to these silver-spoon kids it's ok to do what you did. Truth to Power? What a crock!
