New York Post Gives 'Dancing With The Stars' Article Two Very Different Headlines

First Posted: 05/26/10 08:20 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET

Ny Post Evan Lysacek

Yesterday was the season finale of ABC's popular show Dancing With The Stars, and if you were an online customer of the New York Post, you probably read about it in a brief item from Michael Starr titled "'Dancing' Doll Beats Ice King." If you don't watch the show, this refers to the fact that Pussycat Doll member Nicole Scherzinger triumphed over Evan Lysacek, the gold-medal winning U.S. figure skater from the most recent Winter Olympics in vancouver.

If you were a customer of the New York Post's print edition, however, the same article came with a headline with that extra dose of pointless homophobia that makes things extra nice:

[Hat Tip to the Unstoppable Mark Graham.]

The NY Post has always been yellow journalism, but that headline makes me puke. Evan was an excellent competitor. Can't they leave it at that?

Right... just like it was an accident every time Fox "News" would place a "D" next to the name of a disgraced republican when they would identify him or her in a news story. In Rupert Murdoch's world, these are not accidents.

This "typo" was no mistake. It was vicious and the print version published only for shock value, and to insult Evan Lysacek's accomplishments. Why is anyone's sexuality "fair game"?? Is there some kind of "gay mafia" around collaborating to perform "hits" on Evan Lysacek and others who prefer to keep their choices to themselves? This kind of journalism should be viewed by the gay community as a swipe at all they have tried to accomplish for theri own civil rights. If that community has to insult individuals who they want, or suspect, should belong to their community then they are a sorry bunch. Evan, keep your head held high, you are a credit to our country, and your grace and sportsmanship stand far above cheap detractors like those who would publish this drivel.

Now I am confused, I just read Joey Y`s post , so went back to see, they say King not Queen,..what is going on ?
Was that a prank, if that`s the case it is really unfortunate. Do we live in an age where hard work and talent is not enough , only thing matters is sexuality. Same thing is happening with our supreme court nominee.

Looks like a misprint that was caught after the fact and corrected for the online version. Big whoop. I don't think it was homophobic at all, and as a gay guy, I would personally be disappointed if people wasted sympathy points on something that could have happened to anyone.

i really don't think that was a "misprint"....i'm pretty sure someone thought they were being funny. i've never really heard the term "ice king" used before seeing it the corrected headline.

i don't really think this could have happened to anyone...just certain people

Wow. I hope that was a headline writer's mistake, and not someone's idea of a joke. I worked in media and a lot of late-night "humor" did end up in the paper the next day. Someone always got fired, of course, and the paper never admitted why the headline showed up, but it happened more often than you'd think. Ick.

Did any of you maybe pause to think that whoever wrote the headline didn't actually watch the show and just simply assumed that evan was the professional dancer and anna was the star?

With the way some of you are snarking about never watching the show i would say this is a pretty good chance of that happening.
11:22 AM on 05/27/2010
Hmm, just a tiny bit of research on the copy editor's part, i.e. reading the story, would have informed him or her that Evan is the star and is a man!

This is disgusting. If Evan is gay and no one truly knows but himself it's up to him to decide if he wants to or when he wants to come out. The Post is a disgusting piece of trash just like the owner. Homophobia at it's finest.

Yawn. Evan isn't gay. He's been linked in long-term relationships with many ladies over the years, including fellow Olympians. Don't chase this ambulance, Lawyer822.

hahahaha, I'm sure Johnny Weir (if he cares) loved reading this after all the crap he's received from Lysacek. I guess turnabout really is fair play.

It's called a "search engine." Try "weir lysacek controversy." Look at what Lysacek had to say about why Stars on Ice didn't invite Weir to join.

Whether he is gay or straight, you won't be in his bedroom, so why care? He is an athlete and a paid entertainer. If you like his talent, watch him. If not, don't. Calling him a queen only makes me wonder about the editor's latent self-loathing homosexual urges....a la Ted Haggard, George Rekers, et al.
08:55 AM on 05/27/2010
Why are we all pretending that he's not a queen?
I'm a gay.
If my man had such limp wrists as I saw Lysacek had while performing at olympics...
I'd leave him for a woman.
11:22 AM on 05/27/2010
You are "a gay"? Who even says that?!?

1) Gay people who are mocking ill informed straight people.
2) ill informed straight people.

I'm also gay and believe he's straight. Those "limp wrists" help someone ice skate gracefully rather than look like a dump truck on the ice.

I thought the family of Murdoch was trying to get control of that bitter old coots assets and fire Roger Ailes, in order to avoid anymore shame on the family name. Apparently things are going slow on that front.

For the moment, Ailes is still making money for Murdoch & family. Ailes won't leave by himself unless Murdoch's grumbling ratchets up considerably. So Murdoch is free to make statements indicating displeasure with Ailes, and thus buy some forbearance from us liberals -- he can keep us wondering, is he shifting toward Real Journalism? is he about to clean up his properties? Maybe he is sincere, but it's an effective marketing ploy in any case.
