Pi Beta Phi Ohio: Details Of Wild Sorority Formals Emerge

Pi Beta Phi

The Smoking Gun has obtained reports detailing the antics of two Ohio chapters of the same sorority at separate formal dances, both of which caused significant damage to the places in which they were held.

Ohio University's chapter of Pi Beta Phi held a dance in early March at the Parkersburg Art Center in West Virginia. A letter from the center to the chapter president tells what transpired at the party:

Substantial damage was done, which will necessitate costly repairs ... These damages were caused by your members using plates loaded with food as missiles in food fights, pouring a bottle of alcohol on the dance floor and dancing in the puddles and throwing a glass-full of liquor up onto the ceiling. The broken sink (which was in a location outside the area rented for your event) is a result of one of your members and her date attempting to have sexual relations on it, an act which was witnessed by the event's caterer, who walked in on them.

And that wasn't the only instance of public sex. The letter goes on:

The professional bartender hired for the event personally witnessed a couple engaging in sexual congress, while surrounded by a cheering throng. The catering team interrupted two of your members engaging in sexual relations under of the banquet tables.

The center stated that it would have to strip and refinish its dance floor, replace the carpeting in its ballroom and repaint in the aftermath of the party. The letter said that it took four people and a commercial cleaning crew three days to scrub the center clean.

Meanwhile, a month after the Parkersburg party, Miami of Ohio University's chapter of Pi Beta Phi wreaked havoc on Lake Lyndsay Lodge in Hamilton, Ohio. A letter from the lodge's owner to the sorority said that when students arrived by the busload on the night of April 9, most were already "heavily intoxicated" and some "could barely manage to walk inside the facility."

And that was just the beginning. As the night continued, one student "became angry and decided to flip the entire appetizer table over." Two girls "continually vomited throughout the facility." Students threw crystal vases off the lodge's porch, defecated outside the building and broke the mane off of an ornamental lion. When a lodge worker found a couple having sex in the caterer's closet, they cursed at her.

Lodge owner Lyndsay Rapier-Phipps wrote:

We are appalled at the student's [sic] behavior. My husband and I are graduates of Miami University, and we both agree that college students can drink and have a good time, but last Friday was not just a bunch of college students drinking and having a good time. It was bunch of college students getting totally obliterated and behaving like immature children.

According to an earlier report, Miami of Ohio's chapter of Pi Beta Phi has been placed on probation. Miami President David Hodge said the school was "extremely disappointed and embarrassed by the behavior displayed by [the] students."

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports that the art center has been fully compensated through insurance for damages done. The national office of Pi Beta Phi alleged that the center's claims were "grossly exaggerated."

This may be the reason why many college grads cannot find work.

Why should the insurance company even have to pay? Sue the pigs for damages.

Pigs, how sexist!

We can see how jumpy you are Stading, ignoring the fact that these people acted like pigs, defecating on private rented property and otherwise acting like farm animals with no remorse or responsibility. So, in reality, calling them pigs would imply they actually had some manners. Pigs is a compliment really.

Pi Phis can bring it! I can't believe I never engaged in sexual congress on the dance floor. My college experience pales in comparison to these ladies'

I commend both their ingenuity and their camaraderie. Especially their camaraderie.

I was in university back in the late 70's and early 80's and I must say that we Kappas had a darned good time but were never destructive. Well, there was that one time in front of the administration building....

Sounds just like most greek life formals...just usually its the frats formal so no one cares.

Also Phi Bi's are nuts and their sorority makes no sense, because there is no consistency across schools. Sometimes there the hot sorority, sometimes the ugly one. I guess they get consistency in their Pepsi addictions.

all college students are adicted to pepsi though lol

First off, it's Pi Phi so that says to me that you don't know a lot about them. Secondly, NOOOO sorority or fraternity has "consistency across schools." I've lived in many states and went to 2 colleges and can tell you that even between just my two universities there was many differences in different chapters. Pi Beta Phi is one of the largest and well respect sororities. I know many and can tell you that these stories are not typical.

What this story doesn't point out is that the Ohio University incident was not reported to the police until a month later. I've also seen pictures that do not tell this same story. It sounds more like the people at the Art Center are trying to make a buck off the Miami story. BTW, the lawyer in the Ohio Univ. incident is married to the women who runs the center and is going to jail for tax evasion. Fishy!

agreed - being part of a fraternity and going to their national conventions, its easy to see that while one may be a cocky chapter, another may be a nerdy chapter, another may just be a bunch of average guys. I believe if the national headquarters put any sort of restrictions on new members, that would be illegal - you can't say, all Pi Phi's must be hot...

I would have to call these isolated incidents. Send the bill to the national chapters.

Something about the Art Centre's account doesn't ring true. It sounds like the old story where a minor dent in a car door somehow turns into $5000 worth of body work.

I agree, the only costly repair was the sink and that wasn't proably near as bad as their making it sound. If you've ever held a college part in your HOUSE/apartment you know that it doesn't make that kind of damage....and yes there was alcohol thrown around, and people hooking up in all sorts of places. It DOESN'T cost 5K to fix.
02:18 AM on 05/27/2010
So are they saying there was a lot of lesbians in this sororities who got wild and broke up the place? I don't get the point
01:15 AM on 05/27/2010
The Smoking Gun reported this. Don't they usually focus on "The World's Dumbest Criminals" and "When Animals Attack?" Consider the source.

The fact that restitution was made in West Virginia and Miami of Ohio's chapter was placed on probation indicate that the stories are true.
