Tier 5: Pelosi Says No To More Weeks Of Unemployment Benefits

Pelosi

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that Congress will not take up any measure to give the long-term jobless more weeks of unemployment benefits beyond the 99 weeks available in some states.

Congress is currently locked in an epic battle just to preserve the 99 weeks for the rest of the year. In a seemingly futile effort to appease deficit hawks, Dem leadership already weakened its "extenders bill," formally known as the American Jobs and Closing Loopholes Act, by shortening the unemployment extension through November instead of December.

Hundreds of thousands of people, however, have already exhausted 99 weeks of benefits with no jobs in sight. Thousands signed a petition to demand Congress add a "Tier V" to the four tiers of benefits that currently make up the 99 weeks.

A reporter asked Pelosi at her weekly press conference if there were any plans to help the 99ers.

"No. This bill will go until the end of November, at that time we'll take up something, but not between now and then," said Pelosi (D-Calif.). "The situation I see is that members who are from low unemployment areas are very concerned about the deficit. Members who are from high unemployment areas are very concerned about jobs. So we have to come to a compromise as to how to move forward, and we did with this bill going to November."

But come November, if Congress takes up anything related to unemployment, it will most likely be another temporary extension of existing benefits. The extension under consideration this week is the fourth in the last six months. And while a handful of senators have pledged to constituents that they will fight for more weeks of benefits, Senate Finance Committee chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) has said that "99 weeks is sufficient."

HuffPost asked Senate Budget Committee chairman Kent Conrad on Thursday (D-N.D.) if Congress will take up another extension in November or if it might not bother even with that.

"It's so hard to know what the economic conditions will be at that point," he said.

Andrew Stettner, deputy director of the National Employment Law Project, which has been lobbying for Congress to extend benefits through the end of the year and beyond, said midterm elections will make things more tricky politically in November. NELP's goal is for Congress to reauthorize 99 weeks of benefits for the next two years if necessary.

"As an advocate, I'm a little worried about what happens at November 30th," said Stettner. "It's not a great time to get something done in a thoughtful way."

Stettner added that he does expect Congress to continue to extend enhanced benefits, though perhaps with fewer weeks in certain states.

"Nobody's expecting that there will be no extension next year," he said. "There have to be extensions given the job hole that we're in."

Im a 99er and I have 4 young children, Life has been extremely hard for us. We have not given up, we are still fighting to survive. Message to all the law makers " Unemployment rate is dropping because you have all screwed the american people for your own personal gain. I will enjoy sitting along side you in the unemployment office, come election time when your all out of work. Imagine what your resume will look like. You can put under special skills... Screwing People Over, and Over, and Over" If anyone is wondering why none of the lawmakers care about the future of this country, its because there all realizing they wont be around to enjoy it! They are part of the PAST! Rally together people! Only we can change the future, not the yuppie law makers. We all need to come together, Im a 99er and I dont want a handout. I just want to be heard, and respected!

Hi Nancy,
I was wondering if possibly I could borrow a few bucks from you. Appreciate your kindness. You see, 99er's could use some help too.

The constructive thing to do is single out the lawmakers who have NOT SUPPORTED protecting unemployed workers, and listing who they are so that we can campaign against them and toss them out of their seats in Congress. If Government is supposed to be for the People and by the people then that's what we need to do.

a. The next thing is TERM LIMITS. Since they won't enact it on themselves, let's do it for them. Vote them out after 2 years if they do not do the people's work,. Vote them out after 6 years if they do. Give senators one term only. Just 6 years. There doesn't need to be a law. Just Grass Roots. As Voters we ENACT TERM LIMITS. Limit their terms if they FAIL to work for the citizens of the country.

b. Please use the modern communication, internet, email from friends, clubs to learn their activities to vote them out. Take advantage of free communication on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and so on. Since other media just are one way of communication. They don’t let us participate in discussing.

Obviously those Senators and Congressmembers who voted for the stimulus and vote against unemployment extensions know who matters: their money dealers on Wall Street.

Since Obama fell for the first act (reward Wall Street Criminals for destroying the Economy), his critics who tried to warn him about the upcoming fiscal fights and the exceedingly weak Stimulus package last year, these critics have proven prophetic.

Now Obama can watch as the Rs destroy his agenda, and replace his party's power wielders with those more adept at making him fail than he is at telling the nation what/how they work.

Put together Ezra Klein's WaPo article today with the Playboy article by the anonymous Tea Party operative, and you can miss the game plan if you are as ignorant/stupid as Alan Simpson, former R senator Obama appointed to the budget balancing commission.

And keep in mind those same stupid ignoramouses are the ones who borrowed the trillions from Social Security, and now want us all to forgive them because they are geniuses at making many of us believe the money was spent by Democrats, and went to Social Security recipients, and was used to build interstate highways.

Where is the political press when you need it?

Where are Obama's rhetorical skills when HE needs them as much as the rest of us do.

THE SAD TRUTH IS THAT ITS ALL ABOUT VOTES WITH THE ELECTIONS COMING UP IN THE FALL OF 2010, THE US GOVERNMENT WOULD RATHER POUR BILLIONS MONTHLY OF BENEFITS TO THE 80 MILLION + ILLEGALS IN THE USA CURRENTLY THAN APPROVE A 15 BILLION DOLLAR EXTENSION OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS. ILLEGALS GET FOOD STAMPS,PUBLIC ASSISTANCE,SECTION 8 RENT ASSITANCE,ETC... .

I HAVE USED ABOUT 79 WEEKS HERE IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS AND WAS GRANTED IN MAY 2010 A 20 WEEK EMERGENCY EXTENSION AND WAS TOLD IN MAY 2010 BY A IDES REP THAT I WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED IF A EXTENSION WAS NOT GRANTED IN EARLY JUNE 2010 FOR THE TIER 5 LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED, YET IN MID JUNE 2010 I WAS INFORMED THAT MY BENFITS NEEDED THIS EXTENSION ????? I TRIED CALLING THIS SAME IDES REP TWICE THIS PAST WEEK AND HE WILL NOT RETURN MY CALLS.

BEWARE, THE STATE OF ILLINOIS IS COMMITTING FRAUD AND IS DIVERTING THESE SAME U S GOVERNMENT MONIES FOR THE LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED AND USING THIS SAME FUND OF MONIES TO PAY OTHER BILLS WIHTIN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, ITS PROBABLY HAPPENING IN ALL THE USA STATES TOO !!!!!

HERE IN THE STATE OF ILLINOIS THEY PAY PRIVATELY OWNED DAYCARE CENTERS MONIES TO TAKE CARE OF THE ILLEGALS KIDS IN ILLINOIS, PERHAPS MONIES ARE BEING USED TO PAY THEM PAST DUE MONIES !!!!!!

You are spot on W1! They care more about ILLEGALS and represent them, always looking for more goodies and benefits to bestow upon them. All while millions of Americans have exhausted all their unemployment benefits and there are no jobs to be found. My husband lost his job two years ago, has sent out hundreds of resumes. We have used all our savings, he sold his car and bought a cheaper one. It is infuriating to see our president talk of using an executive order to legalize them. He needs to use an executive order to extend unemployment benefits and to create a TIER V until there are jobs. This is a national emergency!! MILLIONS losing benefits this year!

I worked 18 years the banking and financial services industry and was layed-off in 2008 as my company shut our division down.....I've never not held a job since I graduated college. Since I've been job-less, I spend on the average of 25 hours per week applying to jobs (well over 200 in 2 years) and speaking with recruiters to find work......only to be told that I am too over-qualified for certain positions, or the company(s) are promoting from within at my level, or I just don't receive a response. Competition is brutal out there, and there is always someone with a slight edge over you. Face it, it is an employer's market, combined with little to no jobs. Three weeks ago, my UC benefits expired, and I am now in a real bind, with no end in sight. Pelosi, you need to stop the reckless, irresponsible spending on fluff items (you know, the ones that politically support your agenda) and use the money to benefit and aid the victims in your own country who've been signing the very paychecks you collect - US, the taxpayers. WAKE UP!!!!!, we are dying on the vine out here!!!!!!!!!! And turn off the damn "Give to Haiti" commercial.....I'm sure they got enough of OUR money........we have our own crisis here in the USA......earn your paycheck, and take care of US!!

Pelosi is a vote counter, that's a major part of the Speaker of The House's job. Between the party of NO and conservadems plus the midterm political positioning she is only reflecting what she sees as reality in the House until the elections. A lot of good to blame her! You want progress? Hope conservadems get tossed out and replaced by Democrats from the Democratic Wing of the party and never vote for the GOP at any level; federal, state or local. What this country needs is more Al Frankens in the Senate and Dennis Kucinichs in the House. Is that realistic? One can hope!

I guess congress thinks two years is adequate time for unemployed workers to "reduce their expectation level and take a lower paying job"...the problem is that there are no lower paying jobs, those were the jobs many unemployed were laid off from.

incidentally, I think, this attitude must prevail in the hallowed halls because a majority of our elected representatives have very limited contact with anyone outside the the top 1% of earners.
02:13 PM on 06/24/2010
Not only that, but it's hard for people to take the lower paying jobs that the employers are cramming down peoples throats, knowing they have the advantage right now, when your responsibilities are based on the earnings that you've worked hard to get to throughout your career.. Not saying that something isn't better than nothing, but when your working and still going deeper in the hole? What do you do?

I live in Florida and job search everyday. There are no jobs! My unemployment benefits have ended and I am at a lost as to what me and my family will do. Nancy needs to be realistic. This economy is hurting, and there are many families that will suffer a great deal withot benefit extensions!

Where are the low unemployment areas she's talking about? I seriously need to move to one of those states.

It is very sad to see someone you once thought a fairly savvy individual to dig a hole in the sand and bury her head. Even if the unemployment rate really was 10% (it is of course higher than that, as the near 10% measure takes only those in the UI system into consideration-- there are thousands of unemployed citizens that UI does not recognize) does Nancy Pelosi really believe we are all sitting around living it up on our spotty, here-one-day-gone-the-next, barely subsistence incomes? That we prefer the depression and the eviction notices and losing our vehicles and not being able to buy shoes for our kids?

Wake up, Nancy! Our economy hasn't been this bad since the Great Depression; it is naive to think that a drastic, unprecedented situation doesn't call for drastic unprecedented solutions. If we were all lazy and waiting for handouts, the economy would always have been this bad, the unemployment rate always this high. We want to work, to go back to making real money not just getting a few checks here and there. At one point I'd gone 6 out of nine months without any income at all. Do the math. In 2009 my income for the year was $5,000. I have two children to raise. And you want to say 'enough is enough?!'

Maybe if you lost your job you'd start to think more realistically. I say let's give it a try!

DOES PELOSI HAVE ANY CLUE HOW BAD THE ECONOMY IS ...NO.SHE COLLECTS A HUGE PAYCHECK THEN THOWS OUT COMMENTS THERE WILL BE NO TIER 5 EXTENSION. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXHUSTED THE 99 WEEKS AND ARE HAVING TO SELL EVERYTHING THEY OWN JUST TO SURVIVE. I AM ABOUT TO START LIVING OUT OF MY CAR WITH MY LITTLE BELLA. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. PLEASE HELP THE 99ERS. THE GOVERNMENT CREATED THIS 2 YEARS AGO WITH A LACK OF REGULATION FOR WALL STREET (THE SEC) AND NOW WE ARE PAYING THE PRICE. I HAQVE ALMOST SOLD EVERYTHING I OWN. PLEASE HELP.

I live in Massachusetts, and my first tier of 26 weeks of unemployment benefits runs out shortly. I look for jobs EVERY day. Unfortunately, I can't apply for the second tier because I miss the cut off deadline. In Massachusetts, in order for you to recieve any unemployment beyond the 26 weeks, that 26 weeks of benefits must be exhausted before May 29th. My first 26 weeks will be exhausted around the second week in June. That means, unless something happens soon, I'm screwed. I don't think it is right that some people can get 99 weeks, but others are only entitled to 26. I'm just as unemployed as anyone else out there.

prs-1; How terribly unfair! To end your benefits because your 1st tier ends on a certain date???What the heck kind of math are they concocting and for what purpose?? I don't really know what to say except that I will include you in my prayers and hope the-powers-that-be soon quit whatever drugs induced them to design such a silly and destructive timeline.
