Joe Jackson, 87-Year-Old War Hero, Helps Feed Hungry In His Community

First Posted: 05/28/10 07:21 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET

In 1969, Joe Jackson was presented the National Medal of Honor, the highest military honor, for flying into enemy fire to rescue three stranded soldiers. Now retired, after over 30 years of military service, the 87-year-old veteran continues to serve -- this time, his community.

Each Monday for the past 18 years, Jackson gets together with a group of friends, who collect groceries donated from a neighborhood supermarket. They bring the donated supplies to Kent Lutheran Church, where volunteers prepare hundreds of meals to feed people in need.

NBC Nightly News reports.

Yeah. That's extraordinarily disrespectful to not even check the name of the award. Wow.

Thank you Joe Jackson for your service to this country, and the courage and bravery it took to help save the lives of stranded servicemen. I HONOR YOU!

What a wonderful testament to ones life to not only bravely serve the country, but to be honored for CONTINUING service to your fellow human beings who are less fortunate, by your selfless act of love and compassion for all of these years, in Kent Washington.

Your selfless act of kindness and compassion will be a great legacy and guide for others to follow, to make our world a much better place.

Thank you Joe Jackson for all that you have done to serve our country, and are STILL doing!

Some people just do things because they are the right thing to do without demanding that other prove they are deserving. It's called theology in action.
