Julio Aparicio, Bullfighter Gored In Throat, Back In Intensive Care

Bullfighter Gored

05/29/10 07:52 AM ET   AP

MADRID — A Madrid hospital says Spanish bullfighter Julio Aparicio has returned to intensive care and is fighting an infection after a horrific goring in the throat by a bull.

Aparicio had left the unit and was recovering well on Monday following surgery to reconstruct his throat, mouth and palate, but outbreak of an infection forced a return to the unit where doctors placed him on mechanically assisted breathing, October 12 Hospital said.

In a statement released Saturday the hospital says Aparicio is now breathing normally and it describes his condition as "grave" but stable.

The matador slipped in a bullring, fell to the ground and a 1,168 pound (530-kilogram) bull drove his right horn through Aparicio's throat and out his mouth.

With the explicit endorsement of the U.S. Congress, the vast herds of American bison were systematically slaughtered in the mid to late 1800's in a campaign to subdue Native American tribes dependent on the bison for survival. The cumulative impact of market and sport hunting devastated the bison and reduced their numbers from as many as 60 million to a few hundred wild bison. The bison surviving this government-sponsored massacre owe their existence to the inaccessible habitat deep within the Yellowstone backcountry. These bison, even after Yellowstone National Park was created in 1872, remained vulnerable to poachers desperate for the vanishing chance to kill a bison. By the turn of the century, only 23 wild bison survived in Yellowstone National Park.

After he left the hospital he probably saw a picture of the incident and thought "Hey, that guy must be in serious condition, what, that's me?" and went back (I am anti-bullfighting, BTW)

"La tauromaquia" is a distant, stylized echo of the bloody entertainment that was dispensed at the Colosseum in Roman times. Does it have an artistic component? Yes. But is an animal being taunted and tortured until it's ultimately killed (and purely for entertainment purposes)? Yes.

It belongs in a museum, like the Spanish Inquisition.

there you go again la mujer gato you answered your own thesis " Does it have an artistic component? Yes". summarized muy buena!

A question to those of you justifying taking satisfaction in the bullfighter's injuries because it might prevent him from harming any more bulls (or saying that he got what he deserved): do you realize that your comments are very similar to those of people who endorse violence against doctors who perform abortions?

Not at all. How do they compare? A bull fighting for it's life and us supporting the bull vs. some jebus freak willing to ki ll a doctor over him/her taking a zygote out of some woman unknown to the kil ler. Not even close. Try again.

Re-read my post: many of the commentors here are using arguments that very closely parallel those used by pro-lifers against doctors who perform abortions: that the matador/doctor had it coming for engaging in a practice the commentor disapproves of or that the injury is a good thing because it prevents the matador/doctor from continuing to practice.

Wishing death or serious injury on someone you disagree with is something we usually associate with rightwingers. We can't engage in the same thinking and still lay claim to moral authority. Totalitarianism in defense of secular humanism is still totalitarianism.

"From observation I would say that people may possibly be divided into two general groups; those who, to use one of the terms of the jargon of psychology, identify themselves with, that is, place themselves in the position of, animals, and those who identify themselves with human beings. I believe, after experience and observation, that those people who identify themselves with animals, that is, the almost professional lovers of dogs, and other beasts, are capable of greater cruelty to human beings than those who do not identify themselves readily with animals."

- Ernest Hemingway
"Death in the Afternoon" chapter 1

That's a really ignorant "observation" since the average, typical, NORMAL, human being does not enjoy torturing and killing innocent animals!!!
06:08 PM on 06/01/2010
Ernest Hemingway wasn't ignorant. It's HIS observation and after reading a lot of the comments here, it seems he may have been right. The book it's taken from is about bull-fighting.
