Obama: Ongoing Oil Spill 'Enraging,' 'Heartbreaking'

Obama Gulf Oil Spill

CHICAGO — President Barack Obama said Saturday that the failure of BP's latest effort to stop the damaging flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico is "as enraging as it is heartbreaking."

Obama commented after BP officials reached the disappointing conclusion that a dayslong effort to stop the flow of oil, known as a "top kill," by packing the well with mud had failed.

It was the latest in a series of failed attempts by BP to cut off the flow of oil.

BP will now try anew by cutting the pipe that lies deep underwater and fitting a containment valve over the leak, an effort expected to take four to seven days.

The disappointing news came a day after Obama interrupted a long holiday weekend at his home in Chicago to visit the Louisiana coast on Friday and show its angry residents that he is in command of the situation.

"As I said yesterday, every day that this leak continues is an assault on the people of the Gulf Coast region, their livelihoods, and the natural bounty that belongs to all of us," Obama said. "It is as enraging as it is heartbreaking, and we will not relent until this leak is contained, until the waters and shores are cleaned up, and until the people unjustly victimized by this manmade disaster are made whole."

Obama said he discussed the situation Saturday with Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, who is overseeing the response to the spill, and Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson, and senior White House advisers John Brennan and Carol Browner.

Obama said the approach BP plans to turn to next is risky and hasn't been tried before at a depth of 5,000 feet.

He said that while officials were hopeful the "top kill" procedure would succeed, "we were also mindful that there was a significant chance it would not."

Obama pledged anew to pursue "any and all responsible means" of stopping the leak until BP completes the drilling of a relief well. But while the relief well is permanent solution to the problem, BP says it won't be ready until August.

In the six weeks since the spill began, the government estimates that between 18 million and 40 million gallons of crude have poured into the Gulf, damaging beaches and wildlife and the local economy.

HuffPo should run a poll to see how many of its readers think White House should put BP North America into receivership until hole plugged and damage claims settled.

Carol Browner's "brain trust." Does anybody trust the brains of these naive, inexperienced left-wingers who just THINK THEY ARE SO SMART THAT THEY CAN RUN THE COUNTRY?

I saw Carol Browner this morning pontificating about how "they've been on it from day one" and that "they have a brain trust" of 100 famous scientists including Chu, the Nobel Laureate, who's working on it.

Does it strike anyone that these 100 scientists are basically worthless? They are ivory-tower theoreticians, just like the ivory-tower left-wing ideologues in the Obama administration are worthless when it comes to something practical.

One practical, experienced oil well driller is worth a roomful of ivory-tower scientists right now.

The president has all the force of a feather the breeze. Nothing in his background prepared him for real problems.

I don't under stand why some people are just so happy to blame Obama for this. Don't they think that if the Goverment knew how to shut down the oil we would. So easy to blame the guy that they hate anyway in this emergency. It's big oil that did this, has mislead us, lied to us and we are going to attact the President? Most people voted for change! GOP , Tea party, and Corp. America has prevented change in this country, they just love the way things were during Bush and I guess long for those days,I know Obama wanted change to give Americans a better life, GOP and Teaparty say no to that and wants Corp. America to have the better life with no rules. US will become a 3rd world country very soon thanks to the GOP, The say hell no party to anything to help average Americans as they continue to promote all the phoney outrage money can buy.

Here is some more outrage for you:

"Transocean, the Swiss corporation that owned and operated the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, tried to limit its Gulf oil spill liability to $27 million, citing a U.S. law from 1851. The Justice Department objected, and lawyers for families of Deepwater victims agree. The oil drilling company changed its position.

Transocean actually made money from the loss of the oil rig, which was insured for $270 million in excess of its actual value. The corporation will also distribute $1 billion in dividends to its shareholders this year. Families of Transocean employees killed and injured in the Deepwater explosion still await compensation."

Jindal and the GOP might agree with what Reagan said:

"The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help."

Now that they see that market forces failed to stem the oil lead, that it's destroying their upscale beaches, and their fisheries, but don't want to pay for the fix, they might also agree with this Reagan statement:

"The work of volunteer groups throughout our country represents the very heart and soul of America. They have helped make this the most compassionate, generous, and humane society that ever existed on the face of this earth."

The Gulf states are largely Rightwingers who voted in mostly Rightwing representatives who supported market solutions to oil exploration and extraction. With this disaster, they neither blame themselves nor the representatives who helped to create this Bush-era oil leak disaster. Some are even blaming Obama for not bailing them out.

Has anyone read any stories of Fundie Rightwingers, or Evangelical preachers leading their flock to Louisiana estuaries and swamps to help their neighbors to clean up God's earth? No? I guess this is the meaning of "faith alone."

I have noticed that free enterprise Rightwingers are oozing out of the woodwork to demand a nationalized response to stem the leak.

I understand their pain and whining; After years of touting the benefits of free enterprise unfettered by socialism to assure us that no such disaster would occur, they now want socialism to come to their aid after free enterprise solutions failed to cap the leak.

Rightwingers propse this solution to the oil leak: "We failed to fix this Bush-era oil leak, but we blame you for it. Fix it now Obamer. Don't waste my time. You are too slow. What are you waiting for? Proof that big bubm'nt does not work."

First of I'm not a Nut, believe in GOD and being Obedience, not that I don't slide of the Rails sometimes, But I'm going to comment on this, Last week the President spoke at the Press Conference, in which most Reporters are there to Play Gotcha, the really don't pay attention to what he's saying, What my group and I picked up from the Conference in what the President was saying, he said in his State, which is Hawaii the Water is Sacred, this is not for Man to destroy. Now I have been doing some thinking I haven't got a chance to do research as of yet, but just guessing this is Sacred Waters all Waters is Sacred, and man have Crossed the Line, this is Man Made Disaster, they have done evil things to this water, it's a curse GOD have drawed his hands back, until the People get right, Penalty for disobedience Deu. 28:15-68 Please Read.

Disagree. God put man over nature. God gave man the use of anything on the earth. Oil is included. Oil is to be used just like any gift from God.

Therefore, we should use as much oil as we need. There is no reason not too.

I am looking for sarcasm in your comment. Can't see it. Are you totally or partially ignorant? Is your hero Rush Limbaugh or Glen Beck?
