Colin Powell: Oil Spill Is 'Beyond The Capacity' Of BP To Solve, Military Might Have Role

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell suggested on Sunday that the United States military has a role to play in helping contain the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, saying that the problem now was "beyond the capacity" of BP to stop.

"The president has to get involved as quickly as possible," Powell told ABC's This Week. "If you don't, then public opinion starts to drag you in the media, and pushes you. And so when something like this clearly is going to get beyond the capacity of whoever caused it, get beyond the capacity of local authorities, I think the federal government has to move in quickly and move in with, to use my favorite expression, decisive force and demonstrate that it's doing everything that it can do."

Powell continued: "[This] is a major problem that can only be dealt with by the federal government and all the resources of the federal government and that's what the president is now doing."

The statement by the revered military and political figure is a reflection of a growing discouragement over the failure of the Obama administration -- in practice or in perception -- to play a hands-on role in resolving the crisis. Asked whether he'd been satisfied with the extent of the president's response to this point, Powell was moderately critical.

"I think the president directly said the other day that he'd been monitoring it, following it, and ... been on top of it from the beginning," he said. "But that impression was not conveyed to the American people. And the comprehensive speech he gave the other day, I think he would have been better served -- and the nation would have been better served -- if he had given it a few weeks earlier. But I think the federal government is now fully engaged."

Did he agree with the notion put forth by Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fl.) that the response in the Gulf should be federalized with the even military units sent in?

"It depends on what you want them to do," Powell said. "The military brings organization, it brings control. it brings assets. Whether it's the right distinction of assets that you need right now, I don't know. But certainly I'm sure my colleagues in the pentagon are looking at it and what you want is somebody who is in the military now, not somebody who used to be in the military. Somebody who is controlling troops now.

"What we would do in my time," he added, "we would assign it to one of our army commanders, a second army would go in on Hurricane Andrew and take charge of things. But whether that's the right combination of assets now I'll have to leave to others to decide. First we have to figure out what do we need? Do we need people to clean the beaches or put out skimmers? we have lots of fishermen and others down there who are available who want the work and know the water a lot better than an army unit coming in, but whether it's army, coast guard, local forces, it is time for a comprehensive total attack on this problem."

In light of the ex-general's statement regarding the need to know "whoever" and not "what" was responsible for the destruction of the oil rig, it would be timely to reveal what was told to me by a former CIA man (married to a former KGB officer).

The destroyed rig was built by South Korea's Hyundai Corp. Shortly before the loss of the rig a North Korean ship was spotted about 60k from its location. Carried on that ship was a mini-submarine. Presumably such a craft would be capable of doing damage.

Not overlooking the accusation that a submarine from NK torpedoed a SK "war ship" (why not call it a "naval ship"?), it is interesting that the former "axis of evil" state would be sailing in the vicinity of so many oil rigs. But given that the US is conducting global strikes via drones and insertion of personnel into Yemen, etc., is it unimaginable that the adversarial states would take some initiative closer to our "homeland"?

Because the mainstream media has not covered this story (and I'm told it is "all over the internet", it seems appropriate to bring such information to the surface (regardless of the fact that given my source all of this could be an elaborate construction of disinformation.)

Justice soon?

From the NYT today:

NEW ORLEANS — Over six days in May, far from the familiar choreography of Washington hearings, federal investigators grilled workers involved in the Deepwater Horizon disaster in a chilly, sterile conference room at a hotel near the airport here.

To take a page from Maher, New Rule:

When your ridiculously profitable corporation's operation causes the destruction of public property or lives on a historical scale, that't the END OF YOU. That's it. You're out of the game. It was nice playing with you (not really), but no need to show up for anything in the future, other than dates with the US judicial system. I mean, when the viewing of your handiwork sickens millions of Americans incessantly for weeks on end, it's GAME OVER.

Just a thought...

Once again, due to the blatant engineering arrogance of BP and the other seven sisters, we now face a national environmental disaster in the Gulf. There are many opinions and reasons that the president is facing such scrutiny over BP's failure to plug the oil leaks and properly address the ongoing structural dilemmas that it faces in deploying the necessary resources and equipment to mitigate this environmental nightmare. What really impacts the way in which politicians respond and react to these disasters is their political connections to these giant multinational corporations and the lobbying that goes on behind the scenes which influences the politician's actions or lack of action (president included). Gen. Powell certainly has come forward with some good ideas and statements by saying that the resources of the Federal Govt. should be used to bring this environmental disaster under control. We need more statesmen like Gen. Powell if our country is going to rebound and recover from these disasters both economic and environmental.

Oil spills happen, both naturally and otherwise. We know this, and we have known this for many years. But we still need to drive our cars to work, and make plastic, and heat our homes. No one is willing to give that up, no matter how many dead manatees make it onto the news. And so any reactionary measures are likely to cause more harm than good. The best we can do is minimize oil spills by imposing rigorous standards of procedure, multiple layers of oversight, and trying to reduce overall consumption of oil as much as possible.

Powell seems to think the military is better suited than BP to solve the oil crisis, but after failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, I'm starting to think we should give the job to Apple or Google.

Powell showed the media a video of two Iraqi gun boats speeding away from the spill. George Tenet handed Powell an audio tape of the Iraqi commandos laughing. Condi Rice on Eat The Press, urged quick action, "America can't wait for an oil plume to destroy the Potomac."

"But that impression was not conveyed to the American people"

Advertising works. We now have an entire network, talk radio and the right wingt bubble that has learned to present anything that suire their intrest as the new reality. Just doing the right thing is not enough for the Black president, they just rewrite the reality no matter what is said or done. FAUX news remains that most damaging thing our country has faced to date.

Obama loses either way. If he doesnt help, rednecks will blame him for being incapable, if he does help, hes a Socialist who wants government to take over everything.

Before military take over of BP disaster keep in mind once military is in sharge it usually stays in charge. Expansive new powers will climax this catastrophy into martial law (immediately). What real choice is there for all property along the gulf except to have immediate action only millitary and it's overwhelming dollars can supply. Better using the defense budget to engage in the best of the best scientists and engineers... everyone within the world to FIX the many leaks while cleaning up the oil sending it directly to refineries. Unfortunately any military intervention may be permanent. WE PAY NO MATTER WHAT ACTION IS TAKEN. Will someone with info let me know when Deep Horisons well was estab.? Thanks

Tubing w/bell @bottom.......air injected into bottom of bell. Air rises up inside of tube , pulling with it water and oil.....to the top where it can be "harvested". I know ....just temporary , but will stop the spreading.
