Mark Kirk's False Military Claims: 'Misidentified' Navy Award Not Kirk's First Slip Up

Rep. Mark Kirk is facing some serious criticism following his false (and repeated) claim that he was named the Navy Intelligence Officer of the Year in the late 1990's. The flap has garnered a lot of negative attention for Kirk, who is running against Democrat Alexi Giannoulias for President Obama's former Senate seat, but is not the first time he has publicly embellished details of his military service.

Last week, the Washington Post ran an article revealing that Kirk did not personally receive an award for "Intelligence Officer of the Year," which he touted in both speeches and on his online biography (the bio was removed following the Post's investigation). Kirk's unit had actually received the Vice Admiral Rufus L. Taylor Award.

Eric Elk, a spokesman for Kirk's campaign, told the Post that the campaign "found the award was misidentified and corrected the name." But as the Huffington Post's Ryan Grim pointed out over the weekend, Kirk has been making the claim for several years, and in at least one video the assertion appears to be "scripted and thought out."

Even before the Navy award buzz, some were questioning Kirk's choice of words when talking about his military service. On May 21, Politico pointed out a video of Kirk saying he commanded the War Room in the Pentagon. From Politico's report:

"In my role in the military, I command the war room in the Pentagon," Kirk told a gathering of experts on U.S.-Chinese relations last May (at 4:18 in the video above).

This struck military observers as, literally speaking, implausible: The Pentagon's National Military Command Center is typically run in eight-hour shifts headed by an officer of the rank of a one-star general, who would outrank Kirk, an intelligence officer in the Navy, both a retired flag officer and current Pentagon official said.

"Nitpicker" blogger Terry Welch has been on Kirk's case about his military service embellishments for weeks:

* Why did Mark Kirk claim on his website to be "the only member of Congress to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom" when he never deployed to the country?

* Does Mark Kirk really equate his three-week Annual Training stints in the country with "deployments," which normally require months of service in the area of operations as well as significant pre-deployment training time?

Welch also said that when he pointed out the false "Operation Iraqi Freedom" claim to Kirk's campaign, the site was changed "without comment or apology."

While his previous slip-ups have been virtually unreported by the mainstream media, some are wondering how much his third strike will hurt his campaign. Meanwhile, he continues to slam Giannoulias. Following the Washington Post story, Kirk's campaign sent out an email to supporters calling Giannoulias "Desperate" for tipping the Post off to the military embellishment story. His failure to take full responsibility does not bode well, either.

"At the end of the day, Kirk is a decorated Navy reservist...But this is also the third time he's been caught embellishing," NBC Chicago reporter Steve Bryant wrote Tuesday. "Kirk had an opportunity to issue a mea culpa and take momentum back by elevating the debate. Instead he's using the Richard Blumenthal tactic of pridefully stonewalling."

It takes a village to unwind the web of lies from Mark Kirk. The new one found by an FDL commenter involves Kirk's campaign site Navy aviation photo. Apparently, the photo was staged because Kirk doesn't work in that plane. He picked a sexier plane for the photo. I've tried emailing Lynn Sweet from the Chicago Sun or whatever it's called, but I can't seem to register. Anyway, Kirk's office told her today that Kirk "flew combat missions" in Iraq, but his web page says "supported combat missions in Iraq." Which one is it?

I don't care if the average "Joe" on the street declares himself to be the King of France, but this guy expects us to trust our well-being to his judgement and leadership and we can't tell when he's lying and when he's telling the truth. Why would ANYONE trust this guy?

and as it turns out, Kirk didn’t command the squadron that took over command of the award winning Attack Wing as he claims. He was in 209 and the unit that took over was the 140.

Good Grief!

Why anyone would trust Kirk on anything is beyond me.

Congressman Mark Kirk and his staff can't even get their Blame Game right.

Alexi and his staffers had nothing to do with exposing Kirk's Lies, it was
Bloggers.
Of course for Kirk and his staff, Alexi is their main target and they, all, consider
Bloggers and voters interested in the truth as inconsequential nobodies.

Kirk and his staff knew what the bloggers were writing and just dismissed
them as unimportant.
After all, Kirk has been under the protection of the RNC, the Chicago Tribune,
the Chicago Sun Times and local news networks, so why should they worry?

GOTTA, YOU EGOTISTICAL CREEP!

Correct. It was Carl Nyberg on my blog and that was picked up by the Nitpicker who originally blogged about Kirk lying that he was in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Nitpicker added some facts he came up with, so it was Nyberg and Nitpicker who broke the story. I can only guess Giannoulias' campaign read it on my blog and complained to WaPo, but I don't know for sure, perhaps WaPo read it on my blog and assumed we work for AG, but we don't. We're independent supporters and I've been blogging Kirk's lies for over 5 years now.

Ellen, if you have any pull, you need to get your posters to write Chris Matthews, who once again today on Morning Joe, that the only thing Kirk did was say he got an award as an individual instead of as a group--surely his producers can't really think this after all that has been written about this!

Another lying closet-gay republican. what's new, really? Do they all spread their legs wide when they sit on the toilet?

Blumenthal lied about one thing and Kirk lied about several things. BUT the GOP is the moral party of family values.

Can't the GOP find at least one, just one, decent human being to run for office in any race somewhere.

Under the overpass, along most urban highways, there are some pretty decent people carrying signs that they will work for food. Try one of them. They need the job and would probably make a better candidate for Senator from IL than Mark Kirk ever could.

this man is begging to be caught: "Help me before I lie again." But I think he's a good fit for his party, regardless. Especially as a closeted gay guy.

A key point: What lie is harmful to any candidate in American politics?
How many people will vote for Kirk's opponent merely because Kirk lied deliberately and repeatedly about receiving a coveted award from the U.S. Navy? What if he falsely claimed in TV ads, mailers and speeches that he'd received the Congressional Medal of Honor?
Would that be enough to make GOP voters cast their ballots for the Democrat?
I kind of doubt it. The standard ploy is to claim your opponent is using 'personal attacks' which are, of course, unfair.
Most effective are lies told in mailers. No newspaper or other media outlet will mention it to voters for fear of losing the candidate's election ads. Or a back-page article might mention a 'dispute' about the content of a mailer, providing the liar a free self-aggrandizing quote in the paper. No commission has the power to impose the smallest penalty on any candidate no matter how egregious, libelous or inaccurate the information in a mailer. Certainly no court will hear even the most scandalous accusations of defamation; courts have ruled that virtually everything is permitted during a campaign.
So any candidate can say he or she voted for whatever seems popular; no one is going to check up, and even if they do, so what?
Kirk is just being practical. He gets more votes than he stands to lose by saying he won this Navy award. That's how it is.

But Illinois is really a blue state so he needed to win over dems....he automatically gets the repugs but now the dems who might have been unsure about the dem candidate will vote for the dem because Kirk is a liar.

And he is now being "outed" (which may or may not be true) about his hidden gay life choice. Things start to pile up, and whether true or not, it is often enough to create a lot of turmoil. AND the key to getting media to cover this, is to raise the issues again and again so that one by one media outlets take up the call. And that is when the tipping point comes and the campaign falls to pieces.

Fanned for bringing up the most salient of points......This is a Dem State, Obama's State and he needs a home room to win in Il. I think this is going to be harder and harder to do.
