UN Security Council Members Demand Israel End Blockade

Israel Raid

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting Monday on Israel's deadly commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip, with the Palestinians and Arab nations demanding condemnation and an independent investigation.

The Palestinians and Arabs, backed by a number of council members including Turkey, also called for Israel to lift the blockade on Gaza, immediately release the ships and humanitarian activists, and allow them to deliver their goods.

Assistant Secretary-General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco said in his briefing to the U.N.'s most powerful body that the early morning bloodshed on Monday would have been avoided "if repeated calls on Israel to end the counterproductive and unacceptable blockade of Gaza had been heeded,"

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, whose country had been a longtime Muslim ally of Israel, called the raid "banditry and piracy" on the high seas and "murder conducted by a state." He urged the council to adopt a presidential statement circulated by Turkey. Many of the activists aboard the ships were apparently Turks.

The original draft text, obtained by the Associated Press, would have the council condemn the attack by Israeli forces "in the strongest terms" as a violation of international law, express deep regret at the loss of life and call for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to undertake "an independent international investigation ... to determine how this bloodshed took place and to ensure that those responsible be held accountable" and consider the issue of compensation.

The draft also calls on Israel to lift the blockade of Gaza and immediately release the ships and civilians it is holding.

Ban condemned the violence.

"I am shocked by reports of killings," he said in a statement. "It is vital that there is a full investigation to determine exactly how this bloodshed took place."

After statements from the 15 council members as well as Israel and the Palestinians, the council moved into closed consultations to consider possible action. The consultations then broke into a smaller group including the U.S., Turkey and Lebanon, which holds the council presidency.

Council members decided to take a brief dinner break nearly seven hours after their meeting began and then resume discussions on the latest draft which calls for "a prompt, independent, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards."

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. observer, said he expected further changes to the text. Several diplomats noted that the United States, Israel's closest ally, was waiting for instructions from Washington.

Mansour called the attack on unarmed civilians on board foreign ships in international waters a "war crime," and he declared that "those fleets, one after the other, will be coming until the unethical blockade is put to an end and the suffering stops for our people."

France's U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud also called for an "independent, credible" investigation that meets international standards, and the lifting of the Gaza blockade.

But U.S. deputy ambassador Alejandro Wolff, made no mention of an international probe, saying: "We expect a credible and transparent investigation and strongly urge the Israeli government to investigate the incident fully."

While the Palestinians and Turks insisted that those on the ships were humanitarian and human rights activists, Israel's deputy U.N. ambassador Daniel Carmon said "this flotilla was anything but a humanitarian mission."

Some activists have "terrorist history" and its organizers support radical Islamic networks such as Hamas, which controls Gaza and refuses to recognize Israel's existence, he said.

Carmon defended the legality of Israel's blockade and the boarding of the ships - which refused repeated calls to send their cargo through Israel - as "a preventive measure" to counter the illegal attempt to break the blockade.

He called the results "tragic and unfortunate."

Wolff said the United States "is deeply disturbed by the recent violence and regrets the tragic loss of life," considers the situation in Gaza "untenable" and will continue to urge Israel to expand the scope and type of goods allowed into the territory to meet humanitarian needs.

I and colleagues have been reading what is the reflective mass opinion and take about what happened early Monday on the high-seas.

A 1000 pictures and news reports will never reflect what is truly happening today in Palestine - I truly urge you to think about making it a goal of taking the family on your next holiday to visit beautiful down-town Gaza.

I've been able to travel a handful of times to the region and I'm neither pro-Israel or pro-Palestine - they both have plenty of guilt to share. I coincidently happened to be there during the infamous Israeli bombings on Gaza - Xmas 2008. In a nutshell ... I have sleeping disorders. I'm not seeking pity - I'm just hoping that a lot of you could truly understand the true meaning of the word: propaganda.

I'm holding my breathe that perhaps this latest incident in International Waters will finally begin to stem the tide to a more balanced view there.

Yes, the Israeli propaganda machine spews the notion that the Palestinians in Gaza, and, specifically, Hamas, do not recognize the Jewish state. Why should they recognize Israel when Israel does not recognize Palestine - they say it never existed - and when they claim the West Bank, and chose to make a Palestinian state solely in Gaza, and then blockaded them in on land and sea with the U. S. pressuring Egypt, needful of aid, to help, it becomes obvious, to the Gaza Palestinians what Israel was and is trying to do. And now, we have a couple of generations of Americans, who because of the AJC's clout, have had as mandatory reading at the middle school level the book, Diary of Anne Frank, along with other zionist propaganda. We Americans have been brainwashed with zionist propaganda rationalized from the real suffering Jews had in that Holocaust tragedy, but is it the real reason to condone the extreme Zionist killing of Palestinians, who also inhabit this planet, and who are children of God, who just happened to put them into the Palestinian bodies which their natural parents made? We now have 25 Holocaust Museums in the U.S. Perhaps someday soon we can convert those Holocaust "Museums" to joint Holocaust/Palestinian Carnage Museums, which would add more poignancy to those places. After all, it is we taxpayers who fund these "museums" in the twenty-five largest cities in the United States, for the edification of 300,000,000 people in the U. S.

There are many reasons to call alarm to Israel, but this boat raid is not one. These boats left the Turkish shore with the sole purpose of running the blockade, they didn't "accidentally break the law". Every "activist" on that boat knew they were headed for trouble and knew conflict was going to happen....innocent bloodshed my ass.

On top of that the troops who helicoptered onto the boat just to seize the control room and bring the boat to stop were violently attacked. Above all else this video proves that those people who died were instigators.

Your version of what occurred is not true.

They were on International Waters, they were no in Israel's space, hence, Israel broke one of many international laws. No matter how you and your friends try to paint this, once again, Israel was wrong on so many levels, including using exessive force-something that has become one of their trademarks. Somebody throws them a balled up piece of paper, and they respond by pounding that person with a metal bat over the head until it looks like jello!
Israel's blockade is inhuman, as such, they have created their own concentration camps. The only difference is that they didn't have to build separate concentration camps, all they've done was build massive walls around 1.5 million people, and blocked any food, health care, electricity and water from entering their own concentration camp.

If NATO - NATO! is advocating opprobrium for Israel, Israel is in big trouble. At long last.

NATO is just trying to sound relevant.

NATO is doing their job and protecting their member-state Turkey. As well they should. Israel has discarded all pretense of not being a well armed bully-state.

anyone calling for the end of the blockade should live a month within range of the iranian rockets being launched from gaza targeting israeli cities.

Those lies are not believable anymore the evidence against them is mounting. And lumping Iran in the mix is the icing on the lie!

Eventually not The Community in Gaza but Lebanon and Syria will have guided rockets to defend themselves against against Israeli attacks, or attack Israel in a preemptive strike. This is obvious to stop this terrible tragedy only one way. A independent free Palestine.

israel and the UN tried the independent palestine thing. it didn't work. it isn't about an independent palestine. the west bank is autonomous an there are no rockets coming out of there or israeli planes going in. the palestinians are being used as pawns by the rest of the islamic fundamentalist whackos to incite war with israel and give them a reason to try to annihilate israel.

israel has not launched any preemptive strikes. they have only responded to threats to their safety.

Thanks for the observation. If we increase people's awareness we can slowly build momentum. That's what happened in South Africa to good effect.

The danger is that the more today's Israelis invoke the Holocaust card, either implicitly or explicitly, to deflect away criticism the more likely it will become that people will start saying, 'So what? That was nearly 100 years ago. Get over it'.
That won't be good for humanity as a whole. And that Israel shamelessly exploits the horrific slaughter of their forebears for political gain gives an insight into their callousness, their ruthlessness.

No one knows what the conversation is when Pres Obama is talking on the phone. I also saw a clip of Sec Clinton stating that Israel had to find a way of allowing the Palestinian aid to get through
The blockade and the trinkle of food, etc going in makes the Palestinian dependent on others rather than having the materials to provide for themselves.
America has a unique role to play as they are the country that will need tp play the largest diplomatic role if there is ever going to be Peace. Diplomacy is key and I think the world trusts Pres Obama, Sec Clinton and the rest of their team.

There are more UN security resolutions against Israel than almost any other country in the history of the UN. I think its over 65 resolutions now, but I do know its many times more than those against Iraq that Bush used as to bolster his permission to invade it. But Israel's Government continues to blatantly ignore them and run to the US Congress when they get themselves into a jam like they have now. I just dont get it?

Hey, we can do a concentration camp just like the Germans but we don't have to build it. We'll just wall them off right there in their homeland and starve them to death. It's great. All the benefits of a concentration camp without any of the costs.
