The Oatmeal is in fine form here in their video on why the "Twilight" books are so popular. The formula involves a main character who is "an empty shell," a perfect guy, and the ability to convince the reader that "it would be perfectly normal for a 100 year old immortal with a perfect body and a perfect soul to date an annoying high school chick."
