Barney Frank: 'As A Jew' I'm 'Ashamed' Over Treatment Of Some Palestinians [UPDATED]

First Posted: 06/02/10 09:59 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:40 PM ET

Barney Frank

New update below.

In an interview with the Boston Herald, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said that that "'as a Jew,' Israeli treatment of Arabs around some of the West Bank settlements 'makes me ashamed that there would be Jews that would engage in that kind of victimization of a minority.'"

Frank said, "Once you have a combat situation and innocent people die, I mean, you know, look at our problems in Afghanistan, and we have an obligation to try and avoid it." In defense of Israel, Frank added there are people "howling for Israel to pay a price that don't seem disturbed that North Koreans killed 46 South Koreans by torpedoing a South Korean boat. I think we have a right to ask for some consistency."

UPDATE: Rep. Frank has released a statement clarifying his views:

The article in is inaccurate in saying that I "had harsh words yesterday for the Israeli Navy ("Barney Frank calls for probe of Gaza raid," June 2). The harsh words I spoke were specifically aimed at some non-governmental settlers in the West Bank who I believe have treated Arabs very badly, and, it should be noted, in contradiction to official Israeli government policy. But I had nothing critical to say about the Israeli Navy. Indeed, I noted that I was not familiar with the specifics of the incident, and I talked about the U.S. experience in Afghanistan as an example of the difficult problems that occur when military organizations are required to use force.

I did say that I thought it was important in the interest of Israel and others that there be a credible inquiry into this, but I believe this inquiry should be conducted by a credible group commissioned by the Israeli government. The record of the United Nations with regard to Israel is a badly biased one and clearly no inquiry chartered by the U.N. would have the credibility that it ought to have.

My reference to "innocent people" was a reference to the problems the American military has encountered in Afghanistan - and before that to a great extent Iraq. As to the situation involving the Israeli Navy and those who were seeking to land in Gaza to aid and support Hamas, I noted that I did not know the specifics. I do believe that the decision to seek to land that group of ships in the territory that is controlled by a terrorist group was a wholly irresponsible one, and created the situation in which violence occurred. I have since learned more about the incident and I note the Israeli report that violent force in fact initiated by those whose boat was boarded - entirely appropriately in my judgment - by the Israeli Navy. The Israeli government has committed itself to appointing a credible inquiry and I support that. While governments investigating themselves are always faced with some skepticism, I believe that the Israeli government has a better record of legitimate self-criticism than almost any other government in the world in this regard, and the Israeli Supreme Court in particular has shown independence unmatched by any other judiciary in dealing with security actions taken against hostile forces.

Further, I want to emphasize again that my reference to actions that I am ashamed of is a reference to non-official actions by some settlers who have acted inappropriately and sometimes violently against Arabs. I continue to believe that the Israeli government should be pushing harder to prevent any new settlements and to remove settlements as part of a genuine two state agreement from those areas of the West Bank not in and around Jerusalem.

- Congressman Barney Frank

Barny Frank has much to be ashamed of, and as usual he is way off base on this one.

I really admire barney frank for standing up for the truth. Seriously , just imagine an American Ship on International waters and Irani helicopters land on the ship trying to get the boat to Iran... now tell me all of you watching. How would the american media react then?....Im from sweden and the world condemd it, why is everything upside down in america? I feel sorry for the american people that doesnt get true journalism watching fox and the other channels.

For BARRYCODA. well yes they used metal bars , but have you thought about what LED UP TO that fight that was shown on the video? And What happend after when the killing began? NOW israel wont show the tapes of them shooting the american citizen 5 times in the head. How can u shoot somebody 5 times in the head and claim it was self defense. So shoting him 2 times in the head wasnt enough? Seriously ,wake up!

Tell me the difference between the Somali pirates boarding ships so they show on the video. But there is still tape that Israel isnt showing. Have u

I see that you have no idea of what Frank said. Also your stupid analogy would be more accurate if the ship the Iranians boarded were sending supplies to the armed groups attacking Iran. Also, Iran would have to declare a blockade against the territory and put it into effect, and THEN Iran would have legal rights to board and stop ships running that blockade.

The US is actually boarding ALL ships bound for IRAN right now to check them for embargoed cargos, and this is taking place in international waters too. I can guarantee you that if the US crews were attacked in the manner the Turks did, there would be a LOT more dead bodies since the US covers their boarding parties with machine guns, NOT paintball guns.

I see that you have a problem with understanding English and thinking. Piracy is done by private persons for their personal enrichment. Israel sent the supplies to Gaza after inspection, and HAMAS refused them. Think that the owners of the ships taken by the pirates would refuse taking them back?

I also see that you have never shot a gun in your life since you would know that it is IMPOSSIBLE to shoot somebody 5 times in the head with a 9mm for the simple reason that the head would be GONE after about two shots.

For all those who think Israel was wrong, check out this guy and ask yourself if this is the kind of person you like.

What's happening here? Is HP practising double standard when it comes to moderating comments regarding Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

I notice that everytime I post a comment on this conflict, it is always held up for censor! I am still waiting for my latest comment to be posted. I have said nothing that can be construed as abusive or vulgar nor libellous!

Then why the hold-up? Arianna must look into the standards adopted in moderating comments.

It's telling that even Barney Frank sees Israel and North Korea as peers.

According to pictures, the Israeli's were being attacked
with steel rods etc. on the ship that carried 700 activists
going to Gaza....

Isn't a picture worth a thousand words...
How about rockets that Gaza shoots into Israel...
Is that okay ?

As to outrage about No. Korea killing 41 sailors from So. Korea by blowing up their ship. Thought the U.N. was handling this...slow process...

And....wasn't there a No. Korean ship that went to Syria or Lebanon recently that Israel stopped that was carrying weapons.
Time for people to look at all sides of the story.
Egypt closed off a tunnel that Gaza was using to sneak into Israel...

Ddidn't Turkey, from where this ship started, send someone to Iran along with someone from Brazil recently,
to talk about something to do with their nuclear goings-on...

Put it all together. It spells trouble for Israel.
Didn't Iran state that Israel should be wiped off
the face of the map.

I would like to read articles that give credence to both sides of a situation and not just biased
opinions about what a person perceives the facts to be.

Doubt if my comments will be posted...usually aren't when I post some of the things I have seen in News articles
and on TV news that bleeding hearts don't like.

just another ashkenazi carpet merchant.
04:43 PM on 06/07/2010
just so you can hate properly:
usually, carpet merchants are Arabs -and Jews from Arab countries or Middle Eastern descent, you know, those that you want to send "back" to Germany and Poland...
gotta get your stereotypes right.
04:45 PM on 06/07/2010
clarifying my clarification:
just so you can hate properly:
usually, stereotypes about carpet merchants are linked to people from Middle Eastern descent, including Jews from Middle Estern descent, you know, those that you want to send "back" to Germany and Poland...
gotta get your stereotypes right.
hope I was clearer now.

Mr. Frank was not so concilliatory on MSNBC last night. All for Israel. Matthews thinks he can fool the public. How stupid do you think the public is. We could see the Israeli Army attacking the ship. And this outrage about the seamen on the ship using chairs and pipes to fight off the Israeli attackers is made to sound lik the seamen are at fault. The PM of Israel explained how hurt the Israeli soldiers were. What a joke this is for MSNBC. How much is Matthews being paid by the Israeli Lobby to stick with Israel when it is obvious that Israel, once again, is wrong. Israel wants to continue the genocide of the Palestinean people. The only one with guts at MSNBC, the only one who tells the truth to the American people is Keith Olbermann. He got it right. Chris is a jerk has lost all credibility . I know that the media is always right....we can never critisize the media. Thats the excuse for bad opinions and being called on them. It is the medias fault that the public does not know the truth about the Palestinean and Israeli situation. Chris Matthews is to blame for public opinion being wrong on the Issue of the Israeli raid on the ships. Watch the Countdown video and watch a real reporter in action. Olbermann should receive an award as the most honest and concerned reporter on MSNBC. Tell Matthews to get out of the way.
02:15 PM on 06/03/2010
Apparently you didn't see the pictures of this attack
when it was taking place...

Showed the activists beating the israeli's ....after all, how many Israeli soldiers went on that boat with 700 activists...
One was thrown overboard...
The camera's show what was happening...watch for it.

I have lost respect for Chris Matthews (didn't have much to begin with), Barney Frank ( all politicians turn on a dime, only a question of time )

The less sid about Chris the better.

As to Barney, shame on you. Who got to you ? AIPAC or one it's subsidiaries or some goon ?

Andrea Mitchell - had a lot of respect for her but she's down to half her former size - she didn't go to Turkey, nor Gaza. Will she go on the new flotilla heading to Gaza ?

It is becoming more evident all the time that more and more Jews world wide want to distance themselves from the ultra nationalist comportment of Israel and Zionists. Barney Frank is only one example of an influencial figure but it is far more widespread especially among youth. Israel is not the same representation of Jewish society as it may once have been 50 years ago when antisemitism was so rampant and WW2 so fresh. Today Israel has become the symbol of the new Apartheid and the poster child for religious nationalism and ethnic cleansing. It is impossible to speak of decency and human rights from one side of the mouth and support Israel from the other. The US must make its shift away from Israel sooner than later as this is a problem that will never disapear but has the potential of amplifying.
09:16 AM on 06/03/2010
Yes, we must adopt the policy that Gazans should be free to land 8,600 rockets on Israel with impunity! It is clearly ultra-nationalist thinking that Israel attempts to stop this. This kind of thinking must be stopped, NOW!

Stop stealing land.

Totally agree with MVeeh. If Isreal was open to integration of the Palestinians, there would be no problems with Palestinians striking back in frustration. We also wouldn't have all the problems we have in the Middle-east either. Ever since the 1967 War, the problems of Isreal have consumed more headlines of our news, than any other single subject since that time, bar none. It is time they stopped. And, I really get tired of Isreal trying to draw the U.S. into the fray with them. It is no wonder why everyone in the Middle East hates us.
05:07 PM on 06/07/2010
do u really think they hate you because of Israel -after all, you did invade a bunch of countries in the world and supported a bunch of dictatorships allover the world?
stop blaming Israel for that.
we're far from perfect -and Netaniahu and his cabinet of seven are the proof of our potential silliness- yet is Israel is surrounded by women beating medieval dictatorships of the worst kind, that have no regard for their own people's lives -see Hamas in Gaza or the array of unsavory rulers that want us -like Helen Thomas- out of the picture.
08:26 AM on 06/03/2010
Mr.Frank has the guts to call Israel out, & then questions N.Korea's drowning of a S. Korean ship. What has one have to do with the other? He squeezes out horror, & then cunningly deflects anymore talk of Israel onto other issues. Slick but no cigar! Where are leaders with honesty & integrity in our political system? Why all this smoke & mirrors? Is there no one out there who will stand up & be counted? Our media are just glorified stenographers, trading honesty for bucks than being honest! why should our our money help Israel murder Palestrinians? Where is the outrage from our country when a Israeli hit squad committed murder in another country using stolen passports. Castro had 5 of his intelligence men spy on the Cuban mafia in Miami. They were caught, and charged with spying on US Security installations. Where was the outrage for this miscarriage of justice? We want Iran to release the US citizens held in jail on humanitarian grounds! Will we release the undocumented on Humanitarian grounds,or grant visas to the families of the Cuban 5, as Iran allowed families of the 3 visitation rights. We delude our selves that we are a Nation of Leadership. With each day we are morphing into cowards. Human rights mean nothing to us, unless its to our benefit. We have lost every iota of honesty, decency & morality, which should be our prime motivator to help build a better world. We should not be dictators, theives &

"The Israelis roughed up and humiliated all of us - women, men and CHILDREN"

What, this was a field trip?

Do what you will, think what you will, but leave the kids at home.

Unless the parents are truly naive, putting children in a potentially volatile situation is totally irresponsible.

Yes, I agree. The settlers in the WB do it all the time, encouraging school children to throw stones at Palestinians. The rabbi at Itzhar Yeshiva sends his students out on missions to beat Palestinian shepherds, torch mosques, and vandalize private property in Arab villages.
The difference is- unlike the activists- Jewish settlers are protected by gun-toting, racist IDF and the Arab population is unarmed.

But you have failed to recognize Hamas' use of them (women and children) as human shields and/or suicide bombers.....reading your other posts, I fear you are too one sided for my tastes. I'll join you in efforts for peace, but only if we both have open eyes to the faults of all the protagonists in the drama. Swallowing the orthodoxy of any of them will keep us in the same spot we're in today.
