BP Media Clampdown: No Photos Of Dead Animals, Please

Bp Parody

When we last left Mother Jones' reporter Mac McClelland, she was in the Gulf Coast region, caught up in the surreal tangle of media roadblocks that were being erected by British Petroleum to keep reporters at bay. How have things done since then? Not well, as it turns out!

Indeed, when I ran into some [cleanup workers] packing up on the Grand Isle beach twenty minutes later, I asked them only if they were done working for the day, and they refused to tell me. One woman said, "I can't talk to you," and then another worker ran up to her and grabbed her arm and said, "Just ignore her, ignore her," and the whole interaction was unsettlingly rude and sort of sad. The workers who were staying next to me in my Grand Isle motel last week told me that when BP (not, in this case, and for the record, a subcontractor) had instructed them that they couldn't talk to the press, it'd involved a warning that media organizations would go so far as to dub audio propaganda over their videotaped commentary, putting unflattering words in their mouths.

The New York Daily News' Matthew Lysiak is also in Grand Isle, where he was the fortunate beneficiary of a "surreptitious tour of the wildlife disaster unfolding in Louisiana."

"There is a lot of coverup for BP. They specifically informed us that they don't want these pictures of the dead animals. They know the ocean will wipe away most of the evidence. It's important to me that people know the truth about what's going on here," the contractor said.

"The things I've seen: They just aren't right. All the life out here is just full of oil. I'm going to show you what BP never showed the President."

A dead dolphin, stuffed with oil, figures prominently in the account. It's all very sad, and not a little bit enraging. As Allison KilKenny puts it: "In a sane world, a company guilty of gross negligence that resulted in the deaths of 11 workers would be under criminal investigation, and not be parading around the coast, telling the media where they can go and who they can talk to, while forbidding their clean-up crews from wearing protective gear."

Meanwhile, remember BP CEO Tony Hayward, who this past Sunday said that he "wanted his life back?" Well, he's very sorry about how that must have sounded, to humans:

"I made a hurtful and thoughtless comment on Sunday when I said that "I wanted my life back." When I read that recently, I was appalled. I apologize, especially to the families of the 11 men who lost their lives in this tragic accident. Those words don't represent how I feel about this tragedy, and certainly don't represent the hearts of the people of BP - many of whom live and work in the Gulf - who are doing everything they can to make things right. My first priority is doing all we can to restore the lives of the people of the Gulf region and their families - to restore their lives, not mine."

Naturally, that bit of flackery was emailed to reporters and posted on the BP America Facebook page, in keeping with BP's tradition of keeping anything too troubling as far away from cameras as possible.

From Pure Energy Systems online magazine:

"Please note the discussion of depletion of Oxygen in the water columns in the article. This spill is going to assassinate sea life in massive quantities. Unaccounted for in their studies is the massive quantity of natural gas escaping which is probably even more damaging in this respect than is the release of oil. "

Imagine what the poll numbers would be for Tony and BP if photos of oil drenched dead dolphins were all over magazine covers, etc. Possibly even as low as the numbers Congress or Goldman-Sachs.

Even PBS showed a reporter told by the sherriff's deputy to go get a pass t0 access a public beach, which required visiting the local BP PR office.

What is the deal with Huff Post CENSORS blocking all but "have a nice nice day poor misunderstood Tony H."

In the same above mentioned SPY Magazine article, 18 year terrorism expert and CIA analyst, William Corbett, stated "For years, Wackenhut has been involved with the CIA and other intelligence organizations, including the Drug Enforcement Agency. Wackenhut would allow the CIA to occupy positions within the company [in order to carry out] clandistine operations." He went on to say Wackenhut provided the intelligence agencies with information and was paid in return "in a quid pro quo arrangement". This would explain in part the huge number of contracts awarded to Wackenhut in delicate areas of the national security, such as embassies and nuclear plants, and the $150 million increase in work under the Reagan Administration.

Wackenhut was also involved in illegal US operations in Central America in the 1980s. By exploiting the Cabazon Indian reservation as a sovereign nation, they intended to produce and export explosives to the Contras, evading Congressional law to the contrary.[7][8]

Probably so, only, where did you read that Wackenhut is in the Gulf at all? I don't see it in this article. Is it in one of the links? I also don't see it in Kilkenny's article. Anyway, wherever Wackenhut is, it shouldn't be. It shouldn't exist.

These are the guys that killed Kennedy and now they are blocking the press from reporting or getting pictures of the biggest man made disaster in history.

This is a 100% Republican 100% evil organization and should be no where near this spill or America for that matter.

Wackenhut's surveillance services were fined in 1999 by a federal district court in Alabama for illegal wire tapping, theft of business documents and corporate sabotage. This should come as no surprise as Mr. Wackenhut, a fervent right-winger, made his money in the 1950s creating dossiers on suspected communists, achieving by 1966 over four million files, or one for every 46 adults in the country.[6]

George C. Zoley, Chair & CEO of Wackenhut Corrections Corp., was a Bush Pioneer having raised at least $100,000 for Bush in the 2004 presidential election. [2]

Wackenhut Corp gave $21,600 to federal candidates in the 2006 election through its political action committee - 0% to Democrats and 100% to Republicans. [3]

BP is making demands that we can't take pictures of what they have done? Fine we won't take any more pictures of dead animals, we will meet your demands, now you meet ours. STOP OFFSHORE DRILLING! NOW! And I think we will gladly never take another picture of an oil drenched animal.

That's what I'd like to know. Who gives them authority to decide what photos can be made, what beaches can be seen? Who authorizes the coast guard to work for BP as a private security firm? Why does BP have people directing the FAA?

United States of Bp. Oil giants need to start paying the per capita that we all have to pay. We the people are grossly overtaxed and we are not ruining the invironment for many lifetimes to come like those @$%%$^@%#&^%$ . If the republicans get back in to power this country might as well give everything to the oil creeps, cause we all know that oil rules over life itself.

British Petroleum through their actions are laying claim to all of the oil spewed into the Gulf. These claims need to be brought to court to counter any attempt by BP to limit liabilities.
04:07 PM on 06/03/2010
Let BP lay claim and all oil found on anyone’s property should be considered BP’s criminal trespassing.
12:44 PM on 06/04/2010
They might end up charging everyone for stealing their Oil, then get a gov't order to have everyone return it at heir cost or face charges.

At what point did corporations inherit the right to censor news on public property? Why is this being allowed to happen? Why aren't any news organizations seeking a court order (or better yet a restraining order) prohibiting BP from interfering with news gathering organizations or for that matter private citizens? To date, I have not read ANY news stories with the names or pictures of those deceased workers. Is it too far fetched to imagine that the families of those unfortunate victims have been "incentivized" by BP to not cooperate with the media?
If I or any other person killed somebody, we would not have the right to keep reporters, police, the FBI or anyone else from inspecting or photographing the crime scene and gathering evidence. But that is precisely what's happening here. Why, in America, is this allowed to happen?
The Supreme Court recently ruled that corporations have the same rights as individuals. Are they not then bound by the same restrictions? I am going to be asking my Congressman and Senators why BP gets to tell our eyes and ears on the ground what they can and cannot report. I hope others will consider doing the same.

I suspect that news organizations have their attorneys very busy trying to get access to the coastline and airspace. We should be hearing about those legal actions shortly.
