Paul McCartney Makes Fun Of George W. Bush, Praises Obama At White House Concert

Paul Mccartney

WASHINGTON — If the first British invasion of the White House ended with the house afire, the latest had Barack and Michelle Obama and their kids rocking out in their seats Wednesday night at a tribute concert for former Beatle Paul McCartney.

The setting was the ornate East Room, chandeliers overhead, George and Martha Washington portraits on the walls and an all-star lineup of performers cranking out some of McCartney's greatest hits.

Stevie Wonder had the Obamas clapping to "We Can Work It Out." The Jonas Brothers did "Baby You Can Drive My Car." Corinne Bailey Rae slowed things down with "Blackbird." And Faith Hill stroked "Long and Winding Road."

It was McCartney himself who brought down the house by belting out "Michelle," aiming his words straight at a first lady named Michelle.

He said he'd been "itching" to perform it at the White House, and asked the president's forgiveness in advance. The first lady was soon mouthing the words along with McCartney and the president was swaying in his seat.

After serenading the first lady with the lyrics "I love you, I love you, I love you," McCartney joked that he just might be the "first guy ever to be punched out by a president."

The whole night was built around Obama's presentation to McCartney of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, awarded by the Library of Congress.

McCartney said it was a moment like no other.

"I don't think there could be anything more special than to play here," the Englishman said.

And then he volunteered to make it a regular gig.

"Lunchtimes, we could come around," he offered. "We're cheap."

McCartney, 67, left no question about how he felt about Obama, telling the president that in tough times, "You have billions of us who are rooting for you and we know you are going to come through."

Later, after the TV cameras had left, he expressed appreciation for the Library of Congress and added a zinger: "After the last eight years, it's great to have a president who knows what a library is."

Obama hailed McCartney's songs as a huge part of American culture, telling the singer-songwriter, "That's right, we stole you, Sir Paul."

The Beatles might not have been the first rock group, Obama said, but "they blew the walls down for everyone else."

"They helped to lay the soundtrack for an entire generation," the president said.

McCartney closed out the concert with a string of hits that had the whole audience singing along to "Hey Jude."

By the end, Obama and his family were on stage singing along with the "nah, nah, hey Jude."

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld supplied the concert with its comic relief. He had lots of compliments for McCartney and one complaint – he couldn't quite figure some of McCartney's lyrics.

Such as: "She was just 17. You know what I mean."

Seinfeld: "I'm not sure I do know what you mean, Sir Paul. I think I know what you mean. And I think there's a law enforcement agency in a couple of states that might want to ask you a few questions."

Among others performing were Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, White Stripes singer and guitarist Jack White, Lang Lang and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

The Gershwin prize is named for the songwriting brothers George and Ira Gershwin, whose collections are housed at the library. Previous recipients of the Gershwin award are Wonder and Paul Simon.

Those not lucky enough to snag tickets to the East Room gig can catch the concert July 28, when it's televised on PBS' "In Performance at the White House."

Repubs:

Responsible adults actually deal with many things at the same time. They are capable of thinking more than one thought and dealing with more than one issue.

I for one would be upset if our President had the country grind to a halt every time an issue surfaced.

From the comments here it would seem that the right expects the President to be diving down and  Read More...

So the Emporer with no clothes Hussein Nero Obama hosts the fiddler on LSD while Rome burns and the worst ecological disaster in US history ravages the Gulf Coast !

Hey Paul... So where did you go to college ?

Oh what's that you did not ! And you are calling a man with TWO Ivy Leage degrees dumb !

Can someon please tell me how Paul McCartny wins the Gershwin Prize ?

Though they just did awarded a Nobel Peace Prize based on future works that may or may not happen yet to a man who had just taken office as president and prior to his campagin had not accomplished anything of substance in this arean either...

I mean let's assume they are giving it for what he did as a Beatle and its still hard to swallow. The Beatles as melodic and fun to sing along with as they are....

Thats all they are, entertainers with catchy songs, They were a freakin pop act and not one of them stands out in any way as a great musican or artist save for John Lennon !

We all know Lennon was The Beatles, Wings proved that and Ringo makes it painfully obvious everytime he takes the stage in that Circus sideshow of his.

Since a college education seems to be sufficient proof of intelligence for you--whether it's earned or simply bought with Daddy's money--then may I ask which institution of higher learning you attended? I ask because I'd like to make a donation--clearly they offer neither dictionaries nor English teachers.

Oh, and before you ask that same tired question yet again--Duke University. Care to denigrate that?

As The All Music Guide says in their excellent Beatles biography "That it's difficult to summarize their career without restating cliches that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans, to start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century."

"Moreover they were among the few artists of *any* discipline that were simultaneously the best at what they did *and* the most popular at what they did." THey also say as singers John Lennon and Paul McCartney were among the best and most expressive in rock.

Also on an excellent site,The Evolution of Rock Bass Playing McCartney Style by Dennnis Alstrand,Stanley Clarke,Sting,Will Lee,Billy Sheehan,George Martin and John Lennon are quoted saying what a great, melodic and influential bass player Paul has always been'

And Wilco's John Stirratt was asked in Bass Player which bass players have had the most impact on his playing and the first thing he said was, Paul McCartney is one of the greatest bass players of all time,if you listen to what he was tracking live in the studio it's unbelievable." "With his tone and musicality he was a huge influence,he covered all of his harmonic responsibilities really well but his baselines were absolutely melodic and inventive."

And in an online 1977 Eric Clapton interview,Eric Clapton In His Own Words he says that there was always this guitar game between John and George, and he said partly because John was a pretty good guitar player himself. He played live with John as a member of John's 1969 Plastic Ono Band.

And there is a great online article by musician and song writer Peter Cross,The Beatles Are The Most Creative Band Of All Time and he says that many musicians besides him recognize Paul as one of the best bass guitar players ever.He too says that John and Paul are the greatest song composers and that to say that John and Paul are among 2 of the greatest singers in rock and roll is to state the obvious, and that John,Paul and George were all excellent guitarists and that George is underrated by people not educated about music but that Eric Clapton knew better,he also says that both John and Paul played great leads as well as innovative rhythm tracks.

John Lennon co-wrote,sang and played guitar on one of David Bowie's first hits Fame in 1975 and David invited John to play guitar on his version of John's beautiful Beatles song Across The Universe.Brain May,Ozzy Osbourne, and Liam Gallagher and many more call The Beatles The Greatest Band Ever.

I've been racking my brain since seeing Paul McCartney at the WH, and trying to figure out who it is, exactly, that he reminds me of. Got it! Sarah Ferguson. If he dyed his hair red, instead of brown, and added a bit of lipstick, he and Fergie could be twin sisters. Does he drink too?

While I am a great, great fan/admirer of Paul McCartney's compositions and concerts over the years, he really has to learn to watch his mouth. He is in the U.S. Whitehouse as a guest and has no right whatsoever to bad mouth our former prez. I am a liberal democrat, but, I also believe in respect for our seated prez and those that came before. Paul you need a lesson in 'class'!!!!!! Watch your mouth next time.

Evidently, Sir Paul did not know that Bush's personal library burned, and so how hurtful this comment would be to our dear former President. But, fortunately, aside from the coloring book that George did in 3rd grade, all the comic books are replaceable, so the Bush library can be restored to it's former glory.

Quintessence,

So tell me where do you have your degree from ?

This whole bit is getting old and if you are going to play along with it then you must state that Harvard and Yale are both laughing stocks !

Because Mr. Bush has a BS fron Yale and an MBA from Harvard !

So again Quintessence WHERE IS YOUR DEGREE FROM ?

I am guessing if you even have one it came from some hole in the wall Com College or one of the State Keg Parties that push psudo science like Penn State and their climate hoaxer Mike Mann !

I am also guessing you were the guy who passed out and got messed with by everyone else... Perhaps they gave you a few massive wedgies and drew on your face with marker ?

Thanks for asking, I have an AB from Cal Berkeley with honors, and masters from Princeton and Temple, where I taught philosophy while I was in the PhD. program. In fact, I was the one studying Friday nights when everyone else went out. But come on, it's a joke, like Bush's presidency. The real tragedy, as you imply, is not that Bush is stupid, which he is not, but that he was the worst president ever, and it will take years to get over all the ruination that he and Cheney caused, because they adhered strictly to Neocon "principles", which is proven to be beneficial only to the war industry and the ultra-rich. Are you a shareholder? What's your excuse? Let's see your educational background, from what, Namecaller U?

"Those freaks was right when they said you was dead
The one mistake you made was in your head
Ah, how do you sleep?"

Lennon never would have played for ANY President who was escalating a war. McCartney's patronage is a sad attempt to be relevant. Those freaks were right, indeed.

No they were wrong, and John later made up with Paul towards the end of his life.John only wrote How Do You Sleep because Paul's great rock song, on his 1971 Ram album,Too Many People had some digs at John and Yoko, and possibly so did his song Back Seat of My Car.

The Beatles were my first band. I've loved them since I was four. "Michelle" is one of my favorite songs, what a great pick to sing for Mrs. O.! It was written for Michelles like her.

Bush may have read a lot, which often distracted him from work...but it was probably for show. Look how well he studied the Constitution.
03:43 AM on 06/08/2010
So you are telling me Obama studied the constitution ?

And you are a Huff Po super useer ????

So tell me what exactly did Bush do that was agaisnt the constituion ? Congress Gave he the OK to use force so don't give me no BS on that !

Now if you want to talk Obama we can go right to healthcare and in FACT his will be forcing US citizens to PURCHASE CARE !

That madame head up your bum is 100% unconsitiuional unless you have some view of the Commerce Clause that would allow this...

I will remind you that if we adopt that kind of view of the Commerece Claus then the GOV can make you buy anything they decide down the road !!!!

YOU ARE PATHETIC !

You are the kind of ignorant fool who cursed Bush for doing the exact same things Obama is doing, yet somehow when it's a Democrat its ok to send 30,000 troops to Afgan... It's ok that Git Mo is still open and WE ARE STILL IN IRAQ IN CASE YOU MISSED THAT !!!!

Do you even know what the Commerece Claus is ?????

For a man who has been a drug abuser, and went to prison for it...
led a rock band that promoted rebellion, drugs and sexual immorality ["Why Don't We Do It in the Road?"]
Plus divorcing 2 wives...seems McCartney has a few "logs" in his own eye. Hmm?

or maybe, his decisions and actions, unlike the president of the US, does not directly affect millions of people around the world (ok, maybe thats not true). But at least he is not a war criminal and human rights violator.
plus, whats wrong with drugs and sex exactly ?!

THen what music do you like?

As The Rolling Stone Album Guide said, not liking The Beatles is as perverse as not liking the sun. And Ozzy Osbourne said not loving The Beatles is like not loving oxogen. And a guy who runs Keno's Classic Rock n Roll Site and who runs a Rolling Stones and John Lennon fan site says in his review of The Beatles 1967-1970 Red Album damn The Beatles were one great group and he said in his great review of The Beatles 1962-1966 Red album, that if you don't love or at least like The Beatles and their music then you are not a true rock fan and more than likely will never ever get it.Someone once said Billy Joel said you can't like music and dislike The Beatles.

He also says that John Lennon showed on Paul's rocker Get Back why he should have played lead guitar more often because he did such a good job of it. He also said he played a pretty good slide guitar on George's For Your Blue and he said John also played one of the first and best acid guitar parts on his great rocker Revolution.
