Further Proof That Steve Martin Is Amazing (PICTURE)

First Posted: 06/03/10 07:45 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:40 PM ET

It's easy to imagine that when Steve Martin was at the height of his powers, he received a good deal of fan mail. That's not to say he doesn't deserve it now - just that when he was basking in the beauty of "The Jerk," he was probably rolling in letters from admiring fans.

Turns out Martin had an awesome, and efficient, way of responding. Mad Libs-style. As you'll see from this "personal" letter written on his production company's letterhead, Martin really was on top of his game. (via Letters Of Note)

I used to admire Steve Martin, until he lost his mind and somehow thought he could be as funny as Peter Sellers, thus trashing what was and is, a comedy icon; Clousseau.

If I remember correctly, Steve holds the record for solving the Rubik's Cube puzzle during the height of the craze..

He did it on Carson's show to wild applause.

He riped it apart in three seconds.

Nothing has been as big for Steve Martin as when he created his stand-up routine Wild And Crazy Guy. Amazingly I remembered it recently from when I was a boy and bought it on itunes, just to see if it was still important.

And wow, it had an all new meaning. Steve's older now... and seems to have done all kinds of things, as a writer, musician, actor, you name it. Still I think that even he doesn't realize that he's still on stage there. He broke away from his REAL self to see into other areas, but he's as big as Richard Pryor or Chris Farley... he just didn't freebase as much apparently.

not sure HOW you can mention Chris Farley and Steve Martin in the same breath!! Martin is a genius, and farley was a one-trick pony.

Steve Martin is the only celebrity I consider a "celebrity" (if you get my drift) that I'd want to meet. Not an autograph or anything but just to tell him thanks for sharing his gifts with us. My childhood was...well, let's say not the best time in my life....and Steve Martin was one of the reasons I endured. Seeing him on stage and screen inspired me to think differently.

I also should thank him for getting me in trouble in 6th grade where I was in a reading class and was asked to read a short story, of my choosing, out loud to the class. Naturally, I picked "The Turds" from his "Cruel Shoes" collection. The teacher was not happy.

If you want to see a great piece of film find his "Forgetful Waiter" short film, it's nothing but genius. I wish I could find his bit on how often he smokes pot online somewhere. That always makes me laugh.

Yet another example of Steve's 'talent' was the story they tell about a performance he gave here in Atlanta decades ago - way before he was doing The Tonight Show, or movies, but after Knotts Berry Farm - at a local club called The Great Southeast Music Hall. This was the 70's and you just didn't go to any concert or comedy club or whatever without 'weed'. After a couple of hours of laughing their asses off - a friend that has always claimed he was there relates all this - and with Atlanta having, at that time, Saturday night 'Blue Laws' that required that they close at midnight or something, Steve told the audience of several hundred that since they were all having such a good time that they/he should continue it in the parking lot outside (this was in the middle of a strip-mall, shopping center that's long since been torn down and replaced with a Target and a Home Depot) and he would be right out. The crowd, still smokin' their butts off did just that - gathered outside. Steve, on the other hand, called the Atlanta police to report that there was a riot going on at The Music Hall and to send the riot squad now cause people were gettin' hurt...you can imagine what happened next...of course everybody's still laughing their butts off at the thought of it.
