Brandon Underwood Sexual Assault Charges Not Recommended By Police

Brandon Underwood Charges

GRETCHEN EHLKE   06/ 7/10 10:02 PM ET   AP

MILWAUKEE — Police don't plan to recommend pressing charges against a Green Bay Packers player accused of sexual assault by two women who changed their statements during the investigation, the chief overseeing the investigation said Monday.

Delton Police Chief Tom Dorner said he expects to forward the investigation's findings to prosecutors by Tuesday, but he thinks they would have a hard time proving a case.

"I think it's going to be a problem because there's too much information that contradicts between the alleged victims and the alleged suspect," Dorner said.

Officers were called early Saturday to a condo in Lake Delton where seven Packers players were staying during a charity golf event. The women initially told investigators they were sexually assaulted by more than one Packer while other players held them down.

After the players were questioned, the women changed their statements to say only one person assaulted them, Dorner said Monday.

Police cleared six of the seven players of wrongdoing. A seventh player whom police declined to identify and who has not been arrested remains under investigation.

"It's obviously troubling they would make that statement originally and shortly into the investigation change it, a pretty important piece of information ... it is weird," Dorner said of the accusers.

Sauk County District Attorney Patricia Barrett did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Police declined to identify the women, saying only both are from Milwaukee. One is 31 years old, the other 33. Dorner said he did not know if either had an attorney.

The six players who were cleared were quarterback Matt Flynn, linebackers Clay Matthews and Brad Jones, fullback Korey Hall, guard Josh Sitton and safety Khalil Jones.

The women were examined at different hospitals by nurses trained in gathering sexual assault evidence, Dorner said. He said he did not know the results. No weapons or restraints were used in the alleged assault, and investigators found no evidence of any drugs, including date rape drugs.

Police said all the Packers were drinking alcohol, but it was not clear if the women had been drinking.

"I suspect most everybody was probably consuming alcohol to some degree. To what degree, I don't think there was anyone who was passed out or totally inebriated," he said.

The women met several players at a Wisconsin Dells strip club, Dorner said. He said the women were patrons, not club employees. They drove back to the players' condo while at least some players took a shuttle bus from the club to the resort.

The women left the condo after the alleged assaults and contacted police from a nearby residence, Dorner said.

The NFL and the Packers are closely watching the case, which follows an offseason sexual assault investigation involving one of the league's stars, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Prosecutors did not charge Roethlisberger in that case, but the league suspended him for six games on April 21 for violating its personal conduct policy.

Matthews, who participated in a charity softball game Sunday along with several other players, expressed frustration about being linked to the investigation.

"All we were doing is being asked to talk about a specific incident and that's what we did," Matthews said. "It's unfortunate and it aggravated us a bit, but you just have to put it behind you and move forward."

For now I will hold my opinion in reserve. I did the same with the Ben Roethlisberger case; but as evidence mounted it showed severe suspicion on the accused there. In this case the suspicion is on the accusers, but I will say if evidence mounts against Underwood from the nurses and investigators later, as a Packers fan I want him on full-suspension pending case results. I always thought the Packers held themselves above this and hope the Team Leadership acts as such...

The two women changing their stories cast doubt on their honesty. If they were assaulted why would they change their stores? This guy is forever going to be tainted as having done something wrong though.

Honestly the stuff that came out after the Roethelberger investigation was concluded really shocked me. Don't see how he wasn't charged. This case seems different at this point with the women changing their stories, whereas the young woman in the Big Ben case stuck to the same story throughout.

Weird?

It's called malicious fraud.

It's not weird. It's criminal, but we do not as a society, hold women accountable for their actions...

...which is "weird" because I thought they were equals and not children.

A heavy dose of misogyny there. A lot of men and women aren't held accountable for their actions. Seems you just notice when it is women who aren't

Nope, sorry, not misogyny. I'm a woman and tired of women pulling this stuff, looking for money.

maybe we notice it when accusations are enough to ruin a person's reputation and bring sanctions in their professional career?

Stripclubs, young rich athletes, young women, alcohol, probably 1AM in the morning, just met, Condos,...

Fairy Tale Ending ALWAYs, nothing could ever go wrong?

I honestly can't discern who is exercising the worse judgement, the women or the men but percentage wise I can attest who's safer?

A man meets you in Strip Club, he ain't expecting you to be expecting he will be expecting you to want something Long Term, not that a woman should be assaulted (I don't mean that all) but two women leaving a Strip Club with a Posse of Testosterone, Money, and bad Reps,...

Is subjecting herself to a lot of things, perhaps very little to do with Respect, dignity, safety, or liberation?

Bad reps? What's were their reps or to be clear; what were their reputations?..
06:22 PM on 06/08/2010
Let's just say you and I have different standards concerning activities that I say can be attributable to one's rep? I base my (personal) standards on I wouldn't want MY Daughter frequenting strip clubs, or working at, meeting/hooking up/going to condos with guys that do.

Also, HOPEFULLY my son (when he's of age) won't be as ignorant as his old man (when he was a lot younger and just as dumb as I thought I was smart:):)) and won't frequent them either.

Can you state why you believe (based on KNOWN circumstances of PAST incidents involving athletes, athletes in particular) my assessment is wrong?

I have no beef with the activities that I'm certain still happen at Strip Clubs but why would you (or anyone else for that matter) deem it a place of "Virtue", in contrast to questioning me why I would consider those that go Unreputable? How can you not have an opinion one way or another?

I'd feel the same if it wereLawyers, Cops, Doctors, Plumbers, Clergy,... going to Strip Clubs, leaving with just 2 women and a bunch of dudes.

Now my EXCEPTION, if a couple went there to cool out or whatever.

I use to go to them and I WAS judged, and I didn't dispute, didn't think I could. I don't anymore, so I think I'm entitled:):):)

On an irony side Note, I think Montel Williams met ONE of his wives at Strip Club?

Think it is unfair to say they had bad reps, as far as I knoe none of them have been in any kind of legal trouble.

I'm leaning towards newspapers keeping the identities of everyone involved in a sexu al assa ult until the matter is investigated completely.

It already is. If famous and white it is held. If a minority no matter how famous, it is 1 minute after the police question you.

I called it on the first story post!

They met the girls at Cruisin Chubbies! I was wrong in that they got too touchy-feely with the dancers though.
