Katie Couric Oil Spill

First Posted: 06/08/10 10:20 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:40 PM ET

CBS News is going all-in on coverage of the gulf oil spill.

The network announced Monday that "Evening News" anchor Katie Couric and "Early Show" anchor Harry Smith will anchor from the gulf region each Monday for the duration of the crisis, beginning next week.

"The oil spill in the Gulf will continue to be a major story for the foreseeable future," CBS News & Sports President Sean McManus said. "Our commitment to anchor live from there at least once a week reflects the importance of the story."

Couric has visited the gulf region once since the oil spill began; Smith's first trip will be Monday. "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams has made two trips to the region since the spill; ABC's "World News" anchor Diane Sawyer has been once.

Let's hope they report news, not "equal time from both sides" as that is a bore. Just give the facts and verify first. The ratings will then go up.

would you lean toward believing that Oprah would concur?

I'm telling you, Katie and the CBS team did well on their reports of the Gulf (atleast for a network broadcast). Diane Sawyer is so emotionally inclined with her reports

What the F__K! They've only been there once! Don't they know that their presence will help the oil dissipate much quicker. Where the He!! is Faux News, Morning Joe, CNN?!?!?! Where's that Hard Arse... I mean Hardballs guy?!??! They need to get their butts down their quick!

Seriously, unless they are going to do substantive reporting like Dr. R. Maddow, rather than count the number of times Obama has visited the region, this is just another hollow attempt to grab ratings.

Scott, you might want to encourage people to post their personal video and photos about what is going on down in the gulf http://oilspill.gibberbabble.com/

Maybe Obama should take a cue from this.

Why? The media is exploiting this for personal gain. They report every rumor, repeat the same shot over and over and over again, they cite experts who may or may not be experts and even if they are they are speculating without data. Who profited most from Katrina even though there were no 20,000 dead bodies in NOLA, the officials who sobbed uncontrollably for the cameras was lying and made up the whole thing, and the cop they had on camera at least 3 times a day was arrested upon his return from his trip to the pro game in NY for his criminal behavior in the aftermath of the levee breach. If you are into infotainment and ginning up the mob, then why not have another network jump on board this money train.

CBS producers and Katie...dump all the facebook questions during the news broadcasts.
they add nothing to the reporting aspect. I turned to ABC news for the first time today because of it.

I don't think dying sea gulls will count towards ratings.

Maybe Helen Thomas could step in and liven this show up.

Harry Smith smelling dead fish in the August heat? Really? Seeing is believing!

Sorry--the moment has passed for CBS news. Williams and Maddow have become the clear voice for us down here. Anderson is just too..what's the word..whiney & breathless.

Her glorious moment was being an A to palin, who in turn reacted completely moronic to Katy.

Too bad there aren't enough of you libs to carry the all but one left leaning news organizations.

Thank you. Anderson Vanderbilt doesn't do a thing for me either, don't quite get the fascination with him, unless it's all his own.

Brian Williams and Rachel Maddow remind me what watching the news was like before 24/7 news reared its ugly head. They're educated, prepared, well-spoken and they do their homework. Far better than the talking-head posturing and outright lying you see elsewhere.

Why'd they mod me this time?
03:17 PM on 06/08/2010
I hope that they will actually talk about all sides of this rather than playing up the Republican Talking Points. I'm so tired of "President Obama accomplished X, today. Teabaggers say he didn't." Biased news might as well not be reported at all.

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there does it make a sound Katie?

Once again a day late, and a dollar short CBS, as noted Cooper, Maddow, and B Williams have been there for weeks. CBS is late to the party once again, they should be embarrassed.
