Joran Van Der Sloot Admitted Lying About Body: Affidavit

06/10/10 06:38 PM ET   AP

Van Der Sloot

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Dutch man suspected in the disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway admitted he lied to her family about where her body was buried on the island of Aruba, according to an FBI agent's affidavit unsealed Thursday.

The affidavit is part of an Alabama extortion case against Joran van der Sloot. It said he sent an e-mail in late March asking for $250,000 – and later demanded a signed contract with her mother – in return for showing her family where the remains were buried and the circumstances of her death in 2005.

According to the affidavit: Van der Sloot got $25,000 and on May 10 took a representative of the family to a house where he claimed his father, now deceased, buried Natalee Holloway's body in gravel under the foundation. He said he had thrown her to the ground when she tried to keep him from leaving and "hit her head on a rock and died as a result of the impact."

It was later learned the house could not have been the burial place – Aruban authorities found it had not even been built when the teen disappeared on May 30, 2005, the affidavit said.

In a May 17, 2010 e-mail to the family representative, van der Sloot admitted he had lied about the location of the remains, the affidavit said.

Van der Sloot later left for Peru, where he is being held in the strangling death of a 21-year-old woman. Federal authorities said Thursday they were trying to build a murder case against him in the Holloway disappearance and were not ready to arrest him before he went to Peru.

According to the sworn statement from Special Agent Willima K. Bryan of Birmingham, a cooperating witness served as the go-between for Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway, and van der Sloot.

After he made his offer, Beth Holloway sent $10,000 in cash to him through the witness, who was not named, and sent a wire transfer of $15,000 to van der Sloot's bank account in the Netherlands, Bryan said. The $15,000 forms the basis of a wire fraud charge in the extortion case brought against van der Sloot in Birmingham federal court.

He has long been a suspect in Natalee Holloway's disappearance. On a trip to Aruba with other seniors who had graduated from Mountain Brook High School, she was seen leaving a nightclub with van der Sloot on the night she vanished.

He has given conflicting accounts of what happened and was twice arrested in the case but released due to lack of evidence.

I'm wondering if van der Sloot's laptop was a goldmine of info.

i wd think burying a body under a foundation is more likely before a house is built on top of it.

How about guilty while insane. Doesn't absolve the murderer. Just explains an irrational motive.

Have the authorities also been looking for missing women at some of the casinos he has been visiting over the last 5 years? I seems like a serial criminal to me.

Somebody else knows what happened to Natalee yet he/she won't come forward for some reason: maybe they're an accomplice or maybe they're just scared. Either way, it's hard to believe that this compulsive liar is the only person to know what happened to her.

I agree....with this guys mouth, at the least he surely has said something to others. It would seem he is too narcissistic to keep things to himself and seems to enjoy tormenting others with lies and comments....

This guy is a serial killer. It's unfortunate they don't jail such killers for life in Peru. If he does 35 years, which is the max sentence, he'll be 58 when he gets out and he'll probably kill again. How sad.

I suspect they'd be willing to extradite him to Alabama at some point, and I suspect Alabama would figure out a way to keep him behind bars.

That extortion thing will have a statute of limitations.

The US will then get him for extortion. I don't think he will ever get out of prison, and if he does, there won't be much left of him. A South American Human Rights group says there are prisons in Peru that present a high health hazard to their staff, the prisoners have it worse.

Please people, don't call Joran a psychopath,or allude to any other type of mental illness which would allow this murderer a defense. No one wants him to go to a mental hospital for six months, and be released as miraculously cured.

The probabilities are he has committed other murders of young women that have gone unreported.

There is a further probability, due to the outrage in Peru, he will not live to stand trial or complete a sentence.
12:30 AM on 06/11/2010
They don't have the same system of law, nor incarceration in Peru.
He isn't going to go to a mental institution there for 6 months.
The guy IS crazy - a psychopath....to think otherwise is, in itself, crazy.
12:44 AM on 06/11/2010
Sorry, it's quite obvious there's significant mental defects within him. Both socio and psychopath designations fit him, along with a few other dsm-IV quality issues. None of that, however, diminishes his guilt or responsibility for his actions. He's not delusional, he's very aware of his actions and the need to try to escape consequences. Any mental health diagnosis only explains, somewhat, the "how" of "how could he do such things?"

I had thought him arrogant, and accustomed to privilege. I was also thinking he was a coward, preying on women.

I believe he precipitated his father's death at age 57 ...the father has only been dead for 4 months. Sloot won't admit that he buried Natalie and said he would lead investigators to the spot where "his father buried her." even in death....absolutely unbelievable.

It's sickening that this serial murderer has been walking around free for years, and even worse, knowing that this extortion money is what got him to Peru playing poker, and murdering another innocent young girl.
09:42 PM on 06/10/2010
Well either way, Miss Peru's father will have him killed in Prison.

I dunno, there are a lot worse things than dying. If I were her father, and had the ability to do so, I'd make sure JVS just wished he was dead, in fact, begged to be killed, every day for the next fifteen (or whatever) years. Then the day before he thought he was going to be released, when he had something to live for, that's the day he would die.
