USA Ties England In World Cup Nail-Biter

Usa England World Cup

RUSTENBURG, South Africa (AP)-- The record will show it was a tie, but it was hardly that.
One found renewed confidence; the other will feel the heat.

The United States and England played to a 1-1 draw Saturday night in their World Cup opener, with American Clint Dempsey scoring on a blunder by goalkeeper Robert Green and U.S. goalie Tim Howard withstanding a second-half barrage by Wayne Rooney and his celebrated teammates.

Steven Gerrard put England ahead in the fourth minute, blowing past Ricardo Clark to beat Howard from short range. Dempsey tied it when Green fumbled his 25-yard shot that skipped off the ground twice.

"I'm sure they were excited in bars back home. I can only imagine it was pretty intense," Howard said. "We're a resilient side, you know. We're a tough side and on our day we can put a good performance in."

Jozy Altidore nearly put the U.S. ahead late, but Green got a hand on his angled shot and it deflected off the corner of the goal.

"A little unlucky," the 20-year-old said after his World Cup debut.

Howard hurt his ribs when Emile Heskey's foot slid into his chest in the 29th minute. He had an painkiller injection at halftime and saved the Americans time and again in the second half, frustrating the famous high-priced stars he faces each week in the Premier League.

With each save late in the game, louder chants of "U-S-A!" erupted from Sam's Army and American Outlaws, groups who made the long and expensive trip from home to sit among the vuvuzela-blowing fans on a cool night in the Southern Hemisphere. The crowd of 38,646 included Vice President Joe Biden, who visited the U.S. locker room before kickoff.

"I think a lot of us came off the field satisfied with this result, but maybe a little disappointed we didn't get more out of the game," U.S. star Landon Donovan said.

England must try to regroup as it seeks its first major title since winning the World Cup at home in 1966. The U.S., trying to rebound from first-round elimination four years ago, got a boost as it heads into first-round games against Slovenia on Friday and Algeria on June 23.
While not a shocking win to match the 1-0 American upset over England at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, the U.S. earned a huge single point in its quest to reach the second round for the first time since 2002.

Both sides started out tentative and nervous in this highly touted match, until England broke on top.

Gerrard scored his 17th goal in 82 appearances, bursting past Clark. Heskey had taken Glen Johnson's throw-in and sent a through ball to Gerrard, who flicked it past Howard.

"The funny thing is, we talk about, you know, don't concede early," U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra said. "And man, it's been our trademark lately, conceding early."

Dempsey scored on a play very similar to the goal by Croatia's Niko Kranjcar that went in off Scott Carson's arm and helped eliminate England from qualifying from the 2008 European Championship.

Dempsey took several touches, spun around Gerrard and hit a dipping left-footed shot. The ball hit the field twice, glanced off Green's right hand and went into the net for Dempsey's 19th goal in 63 national team games. Dempsey also scored against Ghana as the U.S. was eliminated in 2006.

"At the last second, it moved a little bit," Dempsey said. "These balls move so much, you just hit them on goal, you have a chance. It's one of those goals you always say, `Why can't I get one like that?"

Green's blunder was the latest in a long line of mistakes by English keepers.

"It was a difficult game," Gerrard said. "I think the important thing in the first game is not to lose. Unfortunately, we've let a poor goal in and we couldn't go on and get the winner."

But Dempsey tied the score when his 25-yard shot skipped off the grass twice and bounced in off Green's hand, yet another in a long line of shocking gaffes by England goalkeepers. It made Dempsey only the second American to score in two World Cups, joining Brian McBride.

England made a critical error in not arriving early to SA for training at altitude, and with the new ball, they looked winded for most of the match, getting consistently beat to the ball. And, to generate offense in the 2nd half, it made no sense for Wolcott to remain on the bench.

This game was ok, certainly not a nail biter, US would have lost 4-1 if it wasnt for Greens fumble and an amazing performance from tim howard, he sole handedly kept usa alive.

EVERY game turns on individual plays and the performance of the goalie. Tim Howard's 'amazing performance" was one of the reasons it was a nail biter.

Not entirely true. If not for Green's fumble, the US would have finished goalless. Howard was the Man of the Match and arguably the best keeper in the world. No need to ask "What if" because he is certain to be the best player capable of dazzling stops throughout the tournament. That said, the US did admirably against a stronger team. It was a nail-biter for anyone afraid the wheels would come of the American vehicle. And Altidore's charge at the goal deserves recognition. It pushed the English back into defense and took pressure off the American defense.

But the part of the game that needs recognition is the American midfield, who looked very competent holding the ball and playing possession up to about the edge of the box. Team USA still has a little way to go, but they had a few admirable moments holding possession in the penalty area. Considering this was a daunting match-up for an opener, well done! I still remember the monumental collapse when they played Germany in 1998's opener. They never recovered from that humiliation.

So basically Slovenia owns group C now...

Interesting.

As of now...yeah they do own group C. But I don't see them beating England or USA, to be honest.

Right but any more ties for England or US puts them in very dangerous territory. England has more pressure just for pride, but all the teams wantto win.

I wonder what the odds are that England doesn't clear the group?

A nail-biter? LOL

Do people bite their nails while napping?

Guess it was a great game for the "everyone's a winner" crowd..................

To improve my enjoyment of the next game may I take this opportunity to remind those from the colonies that Scotland is not part of England and is therefore not 'my team'. We rather enjoy it when they lose and will if given the choice support North Korea against them.
There is no requirement to commiserate with us in the bars after England lose, there is a reason we're all smiling.
07:29 PM on 06/13/2010
And the English smile every time the Scots fail to qualify for a world cup, so they smile a lot more than you do.

I think it's about even on that over the years.
The difference is that we know what our teams like now. The English are still under the impression they have a chance of winning the thing.

To all those IGNORANT fellas who don't know the Beautiful Game yet:

Soccer is HIGH SPEED LAWN CHESS!
You got that? HIGH SPEED LAWN CHESS!
And yet looking as beautiful, exciting and intriguing as you saw between England and the US.

I know some of you are so shallow you are only waiting for the ball to get into the net as often as it happens in Basketball. If it were that easy, Soccer would NOT be the LAWN CHESS that it is. Soccer is Battle, Strategies, Tactics, Psychology etc, and all of that takes place at a lightening pace!!!

....Boring

Not to be too kind all around, but both teams had 89 other minutes to score. That's why it's a team sport -- everyone on the field directly and indirectly affects play all the time. The player who simply fails to shout loud enough that he is open may alter a result.
In most cases, a fatal mistake is one nanosecond of inattention or synaptic sloth. What makes the game so entertaining is seeing several players at once sort of doing great things and less-great things all the time.
If I had a fifth of the talent of the worst player in the entire tournament, I would be even more insufferable than I am as I write this.

American Football: The only time it touches a player's foot is for a punt or a field goal. Well, one could always kick a blown pass or fumble out of bounds.

Gooooooooo Vikings!...Favre quite being a prima donna and announce your return.

So you are confirming that American Football is an oxymoron? I agree. I especially find it hilarious that purists think ending a tie with a sudden-death field goal is an abomination. LOL!!! So it's called 'Football" *why* exactly?

The USA overrated the UK side - and vice versa. Hence the very dull game.

Dempsey created that opportunity for himself. It may have been mishandled by the keeper, but you can't say there was NO skill or good play by the Americans.

Also, England will never give the US credit for beating them (yes, a tie is a beating). Keep in mind that no one has "beaten" them in over 60 years. Either England beats themselves or someone had to cheat to win. Just the way it is.

Dempsey isn't given enough credit for creating the shot and taking it. I've always enjoyed watching him play because of his talent and skill.
Fanned and fave'd for giving Dempsey credit where it's due.
