Alvin Greene: South Carolina Senate Candidate At Odds With Democratic Party After Surprise Win

(AP) - From South Carolina to the White House, don't blame Alvin Greene if he thinks the whole Democratic world is turning against him.

The 32-year-old Greene was the surprise nominee of the South Carolina Democratic Party to take on the GOP's U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint in November. It was surprising enough that the unemployed military veteran barely campaigned after putting up the party's $10,440 filing fee and beat a well-heeled, more experienced candidate favored by party leaders.

But The Associated Press discovered the next day the 32-year-old who lives with his dad faces a felony charge in which he is accused of showing Internet porn to a 19-year-old college student.

On Sunday, President Barack Obama's senior adviser David Axelrod told NBC's "Meet the Press" Greene doesn't appear to be a legitimate candidate. Axelrod said South Carolina Democrats deserve a strong, credible candidate, and it's a big mystery how Greene won.

And U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, South Carolina's leading Democrat, told CNN's "State of the Union" he knew something was wrong in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat by watching the votes come in. "I know a Democratic pattern, I know a Republican pattern, and I saw in the Democratic primary elephant dung all over the place," Clyburn said.

Clyburn said Greene was planted in the race by someone. State Democratic Party Chairman Carol Fowler has called for an investigation.

That appears to be on the way. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said Sunday it is preparing a Federal Election Commission complaint against Greene and other South Carolina candidates who didn't file campaign papers with the campaign oversight agency. CREW executive director Melanie Sloan, an ethics expert and lawyer, said she expects to file a complaint Tuesday.

Fowler said Saturday she has heard other challenges are in the works, although the party is not planning its own.

"The FEC in its wisdom and due time will investigate those candidates who have not filed their disclosure," Fowler said.

The election's results were certified Friday with Greene winning 59 percent of the vote, well ahead of the 41 percent who cast ballots for Vic Rawl, a four-term state lawmaker and former judge.

Fowler said the party has asked Greene to step aside, not because of any sour grapes over seeing its preferred candidate lose, but because of the criminal charge he faces.

"That's why I asked him to withdraw," Fowler said. "It was important for the party to distance itself from somebody who is under that kind of shadow."

For now, it's up to Greene to decide whether to bow to pressure from his party to step aside and allow Rawl to advance as the nominee.

Tick..tick...tick...tick...tick...! I am just watching the clock as the days tick by before the next shoe drops on this entire sordid mess. And when it finally does, I'll bet that shoe will have a ReTHUGlipig footprint. Sooner or later, either Greene is going to spill his guts to the press and the courts, he'll be implicated with others in federal election fraud, or Greene will have a too convenient  Read More...

I am disgusted by the way the Democrat party is treating Alvin Greene the Democrat nominee for Senate!

FACT: Alvin Greene is BLACK so by Democrat standards he should be immune from criticism, but they are doing nothing less than politically LYNCHING Alvin Greene!

FACT: Many BLACK voters, voted FOR Alvin Greene and they now want to toss out the election results and disenfranchise those BLACK VOTES!

FACT: Alvin Greene is a Democrat who served in the Military and using the John Kerry model, he should be immune from criticism as well, but the Democrats are "Swift Boating" Alvin Greene!

FACT: They say he has been accused of a crime, but there are plenty of WHITE Democrat Senators and Congressmen who have been accused of crimes and the Democrats stand by them!

FACT: They say he doesn't seem very smart, but Joe Biden is a complete idiot and they didn't have any problem making him the Vice President because he is WHITE!

The only reason they are going after Alvin Greene is because he is a BLACK VETERAN! Bunch of anti-military racists make me sick!

Where are those Uncle Tom's Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? This BLACK MAN is being LYNCHED by the Democrat Party and they are sitting on their hands!

I see someone has their talking points, fresh off the printer. You don't care about race relations, swift-boating, disenfranchisement or the amount of minorities in the Senate/House. You care about taking advantage of a situation that allows you the opportunity to frame Democrats as racist. You are attempting to project long held accusations against republicans BACK at democrats. Your actions and those of the talking heads of the right show even clearer that something rotten is going on in SC. Since when would Fox be able to resist demeaning a dem that appears as unfit as Greene? Every commentator would be commenting about how shady his background was and how far they have fallen if he is the best the dems have. He is the ultimate stereotype for Fox viewers and would have been paraded out for the nation to ridicule. The fact that Fox has not done this only highlights the sham. Vampires have more luck resisting fresh blood than Fox would under normal circumstances in mocking a dem candidate with this many red flags.

Nope...no talking points...only my typical sarcasm when exposed to the STUPIDITY of the AVERAGE DEMOCRAT VOTER!
02:08 PM on 06/15/2010
Earlier I had commented that stupid democrats voted for Greene because his name sounded better than Rawls. Now they have released interviews with voters that confirm exactly that. I never pull the lever on a candidate or issue that I don't know about.

Assaulting a student, Alvin Greene, triple the debt, oil spill, unemployment......the democratic legacy is astounding.

Foley harassing interns, Sanford, Ensign, Vitter, etc. adultery, Delay campaign finance investigation, Bush-Cheney and their oil buddies taking restrictions off of oil drilling, taking a surplus and getting us into two wars, Katrina, banker bailouts --- oh heck, I could be typing forever. You have that as a republican legacy and you're complaining about the Dems? Too funny.

I don't know if it would make much difference in South Carolina as a whole(maybe it should be hole). The state has so many rednecks and crackers it is pretty hopeless.

It will be interesting to see this played out. The first order of business for the FEC is to follow the money. Where did the 10 grand come from?

Saw this guy interviewed and he is totally clueless. "Meetings, uh rallies, uh, meetings".

To the question "You are not a Republican plant, Right?" he replies "I have always been a Democrat" that does not preclude him being planted by the GOP.

If he really considers himself a Dem, he should quietly resign for the good of the party.

I don't think so - they are not that stealthy. They are loud and clumsy. This reeks of simple voter fraud, IMO. In one precinct he got more votes than the total number of registered voters in the precinct.

GREENE ATTORNEY DOES NOT COME CHEAP- BUT WHO IS PAYING?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/11/AR2010061106159.html

As pressure mounts on Greene to answer speculation that he might have been a Republican plant -- an accusation he denies -- a small cadre of supporters is coalescing to defend the 32-year-old novice, who was victorious without benefit of campaign staff members, contributors or even speaking events. Prominent among them is Eleazer Carter, a Columbia, S.C., criminal defense lawyer, who said Friday that he has begun examining the campaign in preparation for any possible legal action against Greene.

Carter's involvement, like almost everything in Greene's saga, has an element of intrigue. Carter says he's working at the behest of "unofficial members of Greene's campaign" but won't identify them.

"These are people who are interested in this election," Carter said in an interview. "Persons from his county. They are people who know him."

GOOD NEWS FOR DEMINT: HE OUTPOLLS GREENE!

Rasmussen Reports released a poll Tuesday which showed DeMint with 58 percent, while Greene had just 21 percent. Nine percent like another candidate, while 13 percent remain undecided.

The survey is the first indicator of voters' reactions to Greene's candidacy, which is still being questioned and challenged by his own party.

In the June 8 primary, Greene got nearly 59 percent of the ballots cast, which translates to over 100,000 votes. Greene ran no television commercials, seemed to have no organized campaign, and did not even have a campaign website.
06:32 PM on 06/15/2010
Of course, if it's Rasmussen, I always suspect their poll numbers. They released one where the numbers came up to something like 121%. Kind of like Greene won - with more votes than there are voters. Hmmmmmmm

This entire story stinks on ice. An inexperienced unemployed military vet who doesn't have a pot to p*ss in somehow gets a hold of $10,000 and instead of using it for living expenses decides to put it up for a filing fee to run for political office. Then with barely no campaigning funds or actual campaigning, this ineloquent individual manages to win, getting votes in historically difficult election districts. This whole thing apepars to be a set-up to guarantee a win for the republican candidate. The FEC needs to look into this guy to find out who was fundign his campaign and pulling the stings.

There has been a willingness on the part of the Dems in SC to accept the GOP as the normative winners in most contests. In return, certain offices are tagged as "Dem" and certain small areas are generally Democratic. It is a devil's deal and one of the reasons why the Democratic Party in SC was one of the most difficult to work with during the Obama campaign.
11:13 AM on 06/15/2010
As a SC Democrat myself, this has a ring of truth to it. While it may not explain much of this primary debacle,it does point out the difficulties in trying to support the Dem. party in SC.
