Flag Day Food Photos: You Are What You Eat

First Posted: 06/14/10 03:32 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:45 PM ET

Today is Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag by the Second Continental Congress in 1977 1777 (we were just seeing if you were paying attention). Although it is not an official federal holiday, Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress in 1949, after Woodrow Wilson officially designated June 14 as flag Day in 1916.

HuffPost Food wanted to celebrate the occasion with some some fun and inventive American flag food photos and recipes that we found. If you'd like to add any of your own American flag food photos, just click the "Add A Slide" button immediately below. Happy Flag Day!

jaffaorange:
When baking these scrumptious cookies, be sure to not burn America. And when icing them, be extra vigilant that the colors don't run.

I do love the 4th of July - fireworks, burgers and dogs on the grill.

I just wish it were in December instead of July. It's so bloody hot here in Florida.

AND, I wish I could figure out how to make that Flagg Cake #2. How did they do that?

Can't find the recipe.

BTW, my Stars and Stripes cookies were made personally by me, and the photo, which is inaccurately attributed to thefoodnetwork.com on the front page of HuffPo's Food section was taken by me in my home - no connection to the Food Network whatsoever.

Those cookies are beautiful! I can bake a mean sugar cookie, but the decorating usually turns out more comical than pretty. :)

Yours are amazing.

Oh, and the original Food page photo was the one of the Barefoot Contessa's cake. They probably replaced it with your cookies because the cookie pic is more impressive, and forgot to remove the Food Network reference.

Shout Out to my original hometown- Three Oaks, Michigan. They hold the largest Flag Day parade in the US every year. It's not something cooked up for tourism- they have been doing it forever.

WHY WE NEED A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO PROTECT THE AMERICAN FLAG.

There must be protection against, and severe penalties for, those who would disrespect our national symbol by eating it and washing it down with coffee.
