William Jacques, 41, of no fixed address, would use a false name to sign in to the Royal Horticultural Society's Lindley library in London, it is alleged.

He would leave after stuffing valuable volumes of Nouvelle Iconographies des Camellias by Ambroise Verschaffelt under a tweed jacket he would always wear on such visits, jurors heard.

sort of strange that they would put the valuable books out with the rest. Many libraries have special collection­s behind a restricted area that you have to ask for from a librarian. They only let you look at the book while in the library. This would have been a better way to protect these books. He would not have been able to do this.

That's really ironic because it's probably the one book that you can get for free. Ask any church and they will gladly give you a free copy. No need to shoplift it. (although, I wonder if people do it as a prank, or if they actually really want to read the Bible).

That was my thought--i­f you read the article in the Telegraph, it explains that the man stole books worth a total of 40,000 pounds--th­e British currency, not the measure of weight.
