BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg gave a press conference after BP's four hour meeting with Obama at the White House. During his statement, he disputed the claim the the oil giant didn't care about gulf residents, stating that BP cares about "small people." English is a second language for Svanberg, who is Swedish, but reporters took note of his demeaning phrasing, and shouted questions about what he meant after he spoke, which he did not answer.

The comment came at the end of the Q and A session, at the 03:55 mark. Scroll to the bottom for a short clip of the remark.

The exact quote was:

"we care about the small people. I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies or greedy companies that don't care, but that is not the case at BP. We care about the small people."

Svanberg also announced that the company would suspend its quarterly dividend for the year and that it will set up a $20 billion escrow account for gulf victims.

The White House has released a statement:

BP has agreed to contribute $20 billion over a four-year period at a rate of $5 billion per year, including $5 billion within 2010. BP will provide assurance for these commitments by setting aside $20 billion in U.S. assets.

good morning, (it's 8.05 here and I'm at work) but it's obviously well past your bedtime.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
you should do what it is that your employer is paying you to do.

a simpleton might suggest the bedtime of another about whom the simpleton has no knowledge. fyi, your having first hand knowledge of another's intellect, or lack thereof, is not an indicator of that individual's bedtime.

Actually, I think it is a "cheap shot" to call attention to Carl-Henric Svanberg's unfortunate statement in a headline. I understand he is Swedish. English is a 2nd language if that. I, for one, would inadvertently insult every Swede in the room if I attempted to speak their native tongue -- provided I even made sense.

These people need to high a spokesperson - Interesting - they can not manage a company safely (remember Texas) and 100X more violation than their competitors, and now they have proven they can not speak in public, but they manage to make billions - what is wrong with this picture?

They will be "little people" soon themselves.

Just my opinion, but in the way the words "small people" were spoken he was speaking of small business, i.e. "mom & pop" companies rather than large corporations.

Nice to hear little people "matter", but guess what, pal? Big people don't matter to us!

Now turn around, face the wall, cross your hands on your back...click...
You have the right to remain silent...

I like small people, too. They're especially good with ketchup.

Oh, wait. That might be construed as unfeeling and unsympathetic. What I meant was I like small people as long as they know their station in life. Cuz when you step on 'em they get all squishy between your toes.

Can I have my life back, please?

You and the news media are making a mountain out of a mole hill. According to Webster's Dictionary Small and little mean the same thing. I don't see anyone getting up set when called the little people. The man made a mistake, he is Swiss, give him a break. Why are we so ready to criticize everything. We have become as bad as Fox News. THIS IS NOT NEWS.

BP's chairman, Carl-Henric Svanberg is Swedish, not Swiss!

You're right. People seem to be quick to criticize everything.

Btw, there's nothing wrong with FoxNews. I watch Fox and CNN and BBC and our own ABC (Australian).
