Israel Eases Gaza Blockade, Will Allow In All Goods Except For Weapons

JERUSALEM — Israel's government decided Sunday to draw up a list of items banned from Gaza limited to weapons and materials deemed to have military uses and said the easing of the three-year-old blockade of the Palestinian territory would be implemented immediately.

The list of banned goods replaces an old list of allowed items that permitted only basic humanitarian supplies for the 1.5 million Gazans. Under the new system, the government said practically all non-military items can enter Gaza freely.

"From now on, there is a green light of approval for all goods to enter Gaza except for military items and materials that can strengthen Hamas' military machine," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said.

Israel decided on Thursday to ease the blockade under intense international pressure after its raid on a blockade-busting international flotilla bound for Gaza killed nine pro-Palestinian activists.

In a critical shift, Israel said it would allow construction materials into Gaza for projects approved by the Palestinian Authority, such as housing and schools, as long as the projects are under international supervision. Up to now, Israel has banned most construction materials, including cement.

Construction materials are a critical need in Gaza. Thousands of buildings were destroyed or damaged in Israel's military operation in Gaza a year and a half ago, aimed at stopping years of daily rocket attacks by Gaza militants. Because of the blockade, little repair or rebuilding has been done since the war ended.

The list of banned items was not released Sunday, but the government said it will be published.

A Hamas Cabinet minister, Ziad al-Zaza, rejected the Israeli decision, calling it "deception." He told The Associated Press the blockade must be lifted completely "to allow Gaza to import all necessary materials, particularly cement, iron, raw materials for industry and agriculture, as well as import and export between Gaza and the world."

Under its blockade, Israel has banned all exports from Gaza, further crushing its economy. It has not yet said whether there will be any change in the export ban.

In Washington, President Barack Obama's spokesman Robert Gibbs welcomed the easing of the blockade and said Israel responded to calls of the international community.

"Once implemented, we believe these arrangements should significantly improve conditions for Palestinians in Gaza, while preventing the entry of weapons," he said.

The White House also announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be meeting with President Obama in Washington On July 6.

"We need to seize this moment of opportunity here in the region to finally make peace," White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said on ABC's "Meet The Press" on Sunday.

A majority of Palestinians want peace with Israel, Haaretz reported Sunday, according to a new poll.

Israel imposed the blockade after Hamas overran the Gaza Strip, aiming to choke off support for the Islamic militant group, keep weapons out of the territory and win the release of an Israeli soldier held in Gaza since 2006. None of the goals has been accomplished, adding to pressure on Israel to change the rules.

The original system, allowing only certain items provided by aid groups into Gaza, came under fire because of its vagueness. Palestinians complained that only Israel knew what was on the list of permitted items, and the categories seemed arbitrary.

Netanyahu explained the new procedures to Tony Blair, the former British premier who is the envoy for the "Quartet" of Mideast peacemakers – the U.S., U.N., EU and Russia. In an AP interview, Blair said now, the decision must be implemented.

"This is a a very significant step forward," he said. "It also allows Israel to maintain its security."

The government said the purpose of the new regulations was to protect Israeli citizens from "terrorism, rocket attacks and any other hostile activity." It said the goal was "to prevent the entry of weapons and war material into Gaza, while at the same time widening the entry of civilian products into Gaza."

Israel is maintaining its sea blockade of Gaza. Israel fears that without searching incoming ships, Hamas could receive unlimited shipments of missiles and other weapons.

Is this little press relesase part of the deal made after Israel murdered an American citizen in International waters? 4 shots in the head, 1 in the chest. And we helped pay for the bullets.

The world says end the blockade as a whole and Israel says we will let in cardamom and toys. Typical double talk from these war criminals.

Robert Fisk has done it again. It is just not only intellectually seductive to read but also it is realistic. The word of Today delivered by "Robert Fisk" is "Terror" and remember it begins with the letter T. Great reading!

I think enlightened discussion about this topic has ended. It seems that this article has become a hotspot for anti-israel trolls and those foolish enough to change other people's minds on issues that are close to one's hearts. It really is frustrating.
10:59 PM on 06/21/2010
Right, anti Israelis trolls. Because we all know how the poor Israelis have suffered so since 67.

Israel will screw up again soon. About once a week since 2008 I see an article on Huff Po. Once you begin murdering civilians with abandon, the cultural wheels just fall right off...

Judah is a son of Jacob is he not? Reuben, Judah, Levi, Benjamin, Joseph, Zebulun, Gad, Nun, Dan, Naphtali, Asher, Jacob the apple of God's eye.

Moses gives a prophecy to each of the 12 Tribes of Israel (Jacob) tells Judah-

Moses says, The following is for Judah. He said: The Lord hears the cry of Judah, you will bring him to his people. His own hands defend his cause and you will be his help against his foes. I am confused.

Good point, groose. We all know how devious she is.
12:18 AM on 06/22/2010
Israel isn't stupid enough to think that anything they could do would alleviate the inevitable international finger-wagging from an attack on Iran. Even if they gave the Palestinians the entire West Bank and Gaza today, if they bombed Iran tomorrow the world would still call Israel an apartheid state.

The sick irony is that nobody wants a nuclear Iran and everyone wants Israel to just bomb it already, but everyone will condemn her afterward. the hypocrisy and self-importance is sickening.
12:32 AM on 06/22/2010
everyone wants Israel to bomb Iran?

Delusional. Insular. dangerous thinking. My guess is less than .05% of the world wants this, nor a majority in any single country.

yet, you can utter delusions

I read the song of Moses to the Israelites in Deuteronomy which foretells in prophecy, what will happen after Moses death, what the Israelites will do after they are in the promise land. Moses speaks what they will do after his death. I am confused.

Chapter 31verse 20 before the beginning of the Song of Moses. Moses says
For I know that after my dearth you are sure to become corrupt and turn aside from the way along which I directed you, so that evil will befall you in some -future age-because have done evil in the Lord's sight and provoke him by our deeds.
Then Moses recites the Song of Moses, after he gave the laws, statues, ordinances. sabbath. and the Laws of the Curses, which would come if the 12 chiefs disobey them all. Which Moses said they would before his death, foretold.

then afterwards Moses gives his blessings and gives Jacob 12 sons each their land in Israel, when the 12 tribes gather together Jacobs sons-
Reuben,
Judah,
Levi,
Benjamin, ( beloved of the Lord)Joseph,
Zebulum,
Gad (blessed is he who has made Gad so vast),
Dan,( Dan is a lion whelp) Issachar, Naphtali (Naphtali is enriched with favors),
Asher ( saying more blessed then all of Jacob sons is Asher) Jacob
So I am confused.

I love that word "allow". I hope the manager of my local supermarket won't "allow" any more Israeli products in his store.

If you are a member of a cooperative, you can move that they boycott products. Sometimes the fight to boycott the product accomplishes what you want: education.

My cooperative carries Israelis cheese and wines, even if the boycott is not successful, it makes (usually) the local news.

Funny - after all the criticism of Israel stealing the land here's a case where Native Americans are suing to get NY back..what do you think can we criticize Israel legitimately if we're holding unto stolen land ourselves?

MANHATTAN — In the latest twist in a two-year battle, the New Jersey Sand Hill Band of Lenape and Cherokee Indians filed a suit in a New Jersey court claiming it owns Manhattan, as well as the Hudson New Jersey, Delaware and Eastern Pennsylvania.

While the lawsuit may seem unrealistic, tribe spokesperson Laura Zucker said they are confident in their case.

“Oh no, they’re going to win, there’s no question about it,” she said. “They do have a really good case, and they know it. They’re in it to win it.”

The suit claims that the tribe’s land was stolen from them through a series of fraudulent treaties that violated international treaty laws. They are seeking the “return [of] all land, water, trees, etc. encompassing the fraudulent 'Manhattan' purchase, damages, and punitive damages,” according to court documents.

The UN has been charged with feeding these refugees in Gaza for 62 years, since they were ethnically cleansed from their homes inside what is now known as Israel. So this blockade has been against the entire UN.

The hutzpah for these Europeans (Israelis) to come to Palestine, steal the land and homes of a people, and then attempt to starve them in Gaza because they won't agree with that the war crimes committed against them were not crimes.
08:32 PM on 06/21/2010
And why, exactly, have the Palestinians been on the UN's dime since 1948? Why aren't the millions of refugees from the India-Pakistan partition similarly compensated? Or the hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees form Arab lands? Why are the Palestinians the only "refugee group" whose descendants are also considered refugees and kept sucking on the UN's teats in perpetuity?

As for the Israelis: firstly, Jews (all of them, with the exception of converts) come from the Land of Israel: this is a proven, genetically-tested fact. Secondly, most Israeli Jews (to the tune of 60+%) are Mizrahim and Sephardim from Arab lands, so not even the majority of Israeli Jews are "European" at all. Thirdly, if the Jews are "European," how come the graffiti in the 1930s told them to "go back to Palestine" and the Germans and Poles in their "homeland" murdered them by the millions?

As for Gaza: when's the last reported death by starvation in Gaza?
11:18 PM on 06/21/2010
Palestinians on the UN's dime?

That's a lot of chutzpah! Israel has had its hand s in American's pockets for forty years. Three billion last year! I guess you could say it is chump change... and Americans are the chumps.

The Israelis are a Jewish people whose roots are in the Middle East. That's why they're known as a Semite people, being one branch from the Abrahamic tree. The other branch is the Ishmaelites, the Arabs. The Jewish people were exiled to Europe and other parts of the world as a result of the great diaspora that occurred following years of being invaded and persecuted by imperialistic forces that converged in the region. In the last round, in 63BC, the Romans invaded and captured the kingdom of Judea and this sent another large wave of Jewish people out of the region.

The Jewish people remained a distinct people wherever they were and faced great persecution. This culminated in the horror known as the Holocaust in WW2 when Nazi forces exterminated some six million members of the Jewish race and hounded them from every European city they were found.

This gave traction to a movement by the Jewish people urging the international community to help them return 'home.'

The UN stepped in to help and, in 1947, drew up a plan. One year later, 1948, 'Israel' returned home. From Europe, from Africa, from Asia, from all four corners of the earth, Jewish people returned to their Semite homeland.

Those who chose to remain abroad remain distinctly Jewish today, by reason of their religion (Judaism) and their culture.

To accuse Israel of being a thief and usurper in Palestine is unjust, ignorant, and an exercise in repeating lies and deception.
09:05 PM on 06/21/2010
No, no, no, no, no. Israel was not created because the Jews, having just suffered through the Holocaust, cried out for help from imperialists. The makings of a Jewish state had been built up by Jews in Eretz Yisrael for over 50 years prior to the 1947 Partition Plan; the Partition Plan did not *create* Israel, it *recognized that it already existed.*

That's a huge misconception that perpetuates a dangerous myth. The Holocaust convinced the rest of the world that Israel was a necessity, but it did not bring Israel into existence.
09:41 PM on 06/21/2010
Where there not 12 tribes of Israel? Who lost their idenity were taken as slaves into all Nations? They lost their names and took on the names of their owners? Did God not say in the end of times, I Will call them home, I Will place it their hearts to know who they are? I Will gather them from the 4 quarters of the earth? There is more then just one tribe but 12 tribes, right? Asking only.
