UPDATE: Gen. Stanley McChrystal has offered to resign his position in the wake of an explosive Rolling Stone interview, according to Time magazine's Joe Klein.

Appearing on CNN on Tuesday afternoon, Klein said, "I think he's probably going to lose his job. A little bit of news: I was just talking to a very reliable source who tells me that McChrystal has submitted his resignation and it's going to be up to the president...to accept it or not tomorrow." After the television appearance, Klein clarified that his source says McChrystal has offered to resign, but has not officially submitted his resignation.

Likewise, NBC's Chuck Todd tweeted on Tuesday evening, "Senior admin aides: McCrystal has not offered his resignation but has informed superiors he is prepared to do so... There is a path for Gen. McCrystal to save his job; everything depends on how the meeting w/POTUS goes tomorrow morning."

UPDATE 2: HuffPost Senior Congressional Correspondent Ryan Grim ran into Henry Kissinger in the Capitol Tuesday evening and asked the former Secretary of State whether Obama should fire McChrystal. "I'm the last person you should ask, but probably yes," Kissinger said before boarding an elevator.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama rebuked his Afghanistan war commander for "poor judgment" Tuesday and considered whether to fire him in the most extraordinary airing of military-civilian tensions since Harry Truman stripped Gen. Douglas MacArthur of his command a half century ago.

The White House summoned Gen. Stanley McChrystal to Washington to explain disparaging comments about his commander in chief and Obama's top aides. The meeting set for Wednesday was a last-ditch moment for the general once considered the war's brightest hope.

If not insubordination, the remarks in a forthcoming Rolling Stone magazine article were at least an indirect challenge to civilian management of the war in Washington by its top military commander.

"I think it's clear that the article in which he and his team appeared showed a poor - showed poor judgment," the president said, surrounded by members of his Cabinet at the close of their meeting. "But I also want to make sure that I talk to him directly before I make any final decisions."

The eruption comes as the war and public support for it are at a tipping point, a perilous time to change military leadership. A majority of Americans now say the war is probably not worth fighting, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said that public dissatisfaction means the U.S.-led international coalition must show progress this year.

In the article, McChrystal did not criticize Obama directly but called the period last fall when Obama was deciding whether to approve more troops "painful" and said the president was handing him an "unsellable" position.

McChrystal also said he was "betrayed" by Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, the man the White House chose to be his diplomatic partner in Afghanistan. He accused Eikenberry of raising doubts about the reliability of Afghan President Hamid Karzai only to give himself cover in case the U.S. effort failed.

"Here's one that covers his flank for the history books," McChrystal told the magazine. "Now, if we fail, they can say 'I told you so.'"

And he was quoted joking that he doesn't recognize Vice President Joe Biden's name.

Story continues below

As support for the general drained in Washington, the showdown was set to take place in two parts - as part of Obama's regular monthly war meeting, in which McChrystal usually participates by videoconference, and a separate discussion with Obama in the Oval Office.

Several names circulated among Pentagon and Capitol Hill aides as potential successors. Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of the White House meeting, said the administration has not reached out to possible successors, but might do so on Wednesday.

"We all serve at the pleasure of the president," said Gen. James Mattis, one of those mentioned. "I have a pretty full plate here," in his current job as Joint Forces Command chief, Mattis told AP.

Other names include Lt. Gen. John Allen, the No. 2 at U.S. Central Command; Lt. Gen. David Rodriguez, McChrystal's No. 2 in Afghanistan; Gen. Martin Dempsey, commander of the Army Training and Doctrine Command; and Adm. James Stavridis, the top NATO commander in Europe.

A senior U.S. military official in Afghanistan told The Associated Press the general has been given no indication that he'll be fired - but no assurance he won't be. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions between Washington and the general's office in Kabul.

A crucial military push to pacify the Taliban heartland in southern Afghanistan is going more slowly that McChrystal had planned, and showing fewer solid results. Marines in Helmand Province are in near-daily firefights, months after a push there was supposed to clear out the bulk of Taliban fighters.

McChrystal has spent the past several weeks arguing that the U.S.-led military effort is gaining momentum against the Taliban, while Gates argued for time to show that McChrystal's many changes in strategy and tactics can succeed.

Wisconsin Democrat Rep. David Obey, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, called for McChrystal to resign. Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee that approved McChrystal for the job, was among three prominent Republican senators to criticize the general and say a decision about his future should rest with Obama.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said: "I couldn't believe Gen. McChrystal, being the good soldier I think he is, at least in this article not being a very good soldier."

McChrystal publicly apologized Tuesday for using "poor judgment" in the magazine interviews, words echoed later by Obama. He then left Afghanistan for the meeting in Washington.

There has been no similar public contretemps between a president and a top wartime commander since Truman relieved MacArthur of his Far East command in 1951. MacArthur bid farewell in an address to Congress in which he quoted a line from a ballad: "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away."

McChrystal will also meet separately with Gates, who issued a stern scolding to McChrystal on Tuesday that contains no endorsement for him to remain in his job. Gates hand-picked McChrystal to take over the war last year, calling him a driven visionary with the guts and smarts to turn the war around. Obama fired the previous commander at Gates' recommendation.

Military leaders rarely challenge their commander in chief publicly and when they do, consequences tend to be more severe than a scolding.

McChrystal has a history of drawing criticism, despite his military achievements.

Obama called him on the carpet last fall for speaking too bluntly about his desire for more troops.

I have no problem with Gen. McChrystal per se, he's just another robot in the mercenary army we now have. But if he had any real guts, he'd have resigned first, then said the war was unwinnable as presently defined, with no exit strategy, and no clear political goal beyond propping up the Karzai brothers (used to be the Diem brothers in 'Nam) which would have thrown the ball back into Obama's court.
For that, he is a coward, and he betrayed our soldiers who continue to die for no good reason at all in this stupid, unwinnable, war.
'Team America' indeed.

Whatever is the suggestion it is encouraging and will help the
President to assess the prose and cones of the issue before a decision
befitting to the issue under consideration is taken.

For acceptance of suggestions for consideration the suggestion has to
be tailored according to the rules and regulations prescribed therein
for service personals in defense forces. This is because the
requirement of the armed forces personals in such cases is different
then civil service officials.

Normally, Interview given to press by armed forces officials is
restricted with certain limitations and subjects, on which it is
allowed to what extent. It is not to restrict freedom of speech but
for the sake of imbuing in armed forces personals at all rank and file
to maintain secrecy both during peace and war time from all
irrespective of persons, print media or Electronic Media.

Therefore, General Stanley MaChrystal's case has to be considered on the basis of
his rank and status. As to whether his comment was or was not within the
prescribed provisions therein in the army regulation on the subject
matter. And if he is let off by condoning the offense committed,
whether it will become a case precedence in the Army for all
officers to take the plea of this case and grossly damage the army
discipline in future cases.

However, the President to decide to pardon him, retire him, allow
him to resign, or to dismiss him is entirely his prerogative.

McChrystal did his idiot Patton impression, voilating military protocol by criticizing his commander in chief, and in front of a "progressive", red meat (literally) to those immoral politicos whose only goal is devastate the existing America and replace it with their Amerika.

McChrystal is dead on with President Mom-jeans, who's probably in the bottom 5% of any resume received for consideration as President of the United States; but we're stuck with the feckless ditherer, like Captain Queeg of the USS Cain, and McChrystal's (and our) job is to help him, and this country, through the mess even as Obama and his Demo-rats worsen it with their crippling legislative atrocities.

What's the matter , honey? Not used to a president capable of cohesive thought? you will get another chance to vote for a mind numbing dolt in 2012, The right always runs one.
02:05 PM on 06/23/2010
"Cohesive" thought? Are we listening to the same teleprompter?

Go ahead, make my day, give me any one of the blithering ditherer's hundreds of explanations on Health Care that make any sense on what's actually in the bill. Then give me any of his apology tour speeches, that clarifies an action plan for American foreign policy grounded in what's actually happening today, and is realistic for tomorrow.

There is talk about Eric Prince fleeing the country. Then this story about McChrystal. Is Obama going to start laying down the hammer about the criminality of the last administration for a November surprise?

I don't want to get my hopes up.

It sickens me to hear some pundits in the media almost 'excusing' Gen. McChrystal for his insubordination toward the President and others, in order to further their own anti-war views regarding both Afghanistan and Iraq. Rachel Maddow was one of them last night. Only 15 minutes into her program last night, I got the impression she felt it was quite alright to publicly diss President Obama, the VP & others as long as it focused the country on a failed strategy and ending the war. That is an "ends justifies the means" attitude, which the "Right" used all during the 2008 campaign. It's ok to call Obama a terrorist, a socialist, a nazi, a radical muslim, even when it's not true, as long as it keeps him from becoming president, and Maddow & others are unwittingly condoning such behavior in others if it leads to the "correct" ideological outcomes. Pathetic!!!

Pundits of all ilk need to be taken with a grain of salt. Right now Tata is whining to faux gnus that the punishment was way too severe. Really? What a tool.
01:44 PM on 06/23/2010
Maddow simply stated that Stan authored a strategy that went absolutely nowhere. The counterinsurgency strategy Stan formulated has been a failure. Stan's strategies were a failed extension and escalation of the Bush strategy, which was an abysmal failure. Evidently, Stan is incompetent and obviously needs to go. I don't see anything that Maddow did wrong. She merely laid it out in a way that explained that Stan had clearly funked up.

Obama had the ability to end it. Obama ramped up "efforts" in Afghanistan months after The Bush left office. I agree with your sentiment about OBL/Bush connections. But my question is about the current President.

I voted for Obama and would most likely do so again. But This is his war. And? I guess mine too.

Own up.
