Rupert Murdoch, Mayor Bloomberg Lobby For Immigration Reform, Path To 'Legal Status' For Illegal Immigrants

NEW YORK (AP)— Chief executives of several major corporations, including Hewlett-Packard, Boeing, Disney and News Corp., are joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form a coalition advocating for immigration reform – including a path to legal status for all undocumented immigrants now in the United States.

The group includes several other big-city mayors and calls itself the Partnership for a New American Economy. It seeks to reframe immigration reform as the solution to repairing and stimulating the economy.

Bloomberg and Rupert Murdoch, chairman and CEO of News Corp., appeared together Thursday on Fox News to discuss the effort.

"We're just going to keep the pressure on the congressmen," Murdoch said. "I think we can show to the public the benefits of having migrants and the jobs that go with them."

Bloomberg added, "Somebody has to lead and explain to the country why this is in our interest."

The CEOs said Thursday in statements that their companies – and the nation – depend on immigrants.

"It's our great strength as a nation, and it's also critical for continued economic growth," Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Robert Iger said in a statement. "To remain competitive in the 21st century, we need effective immigration reform that invites people to contribute to our shared success by building their own American dream."

The group says it intends to make its point to policymakers by "publishing studies, conducting polls, convening forums and paying for public education campaigns."

The tactics are similar to those used by Bloomberg's coalition of mayors who support gun control.

Bloomberg has for years criticized the federal government for its immigration laws, proposing in 2006 a plan that would have established a DNA or fingerprint database to track and verify all legal U.S. workers.

The billionaire mayor, a former CEO of the financial information company Bloomberg LP, also said at the time that all 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States should be given the opportunity for citizenship, saying that deporting them is impossible and would devastate the economy.

Lawmakers who wanted to deport all illegal immigrants were "living in a fantasy world," he said.

He has recently taken up the fight again, declaring this week that U.S. immigration policy "is national suicide."

"I can't think of any ways to destroy this country quite as direct and impactful as our immigration policy," he said Wednesday. "We educate the best and the brightest, and then we don't give them a green card."

The group's main immigration goals are to secure the borders, develop an easy system for employers to verify work eligibility, hold companies accountable for breaking the laws and improve the use of technology to prevent illegal immigration.

The group also wants more opportunities for immigrants to join the U.S. work force and a path to legal status for all undocumented immigrants.

Bloomberg spokesman Jason Post said no money has been spent on the effort yet, and he could not say whether the group will be a standard nonprofit, a political action committee or a group known as a 501(c)4 nonprofit, which can operate outside the more strict limits governing political action committees.

The business leaders in the coalition employ more than 650,000 people and make more than $220 billion in annual sales, combined.

The effort marks Bloomberg's return to national issues after he spent 2009 campaigning for a third term, focusing mostly on New York City's municipal concerns.

The Republican-turned-independent spent about two years testing the waters for an independent 2008 presidential run, but ultimately he gave up the idea.

By recruiting business leaders and mayors into a national-issue coalition, he is highlighting both of his backgrounds in running a city and running a business, which could be seen as an early move to dust off his presidential aspirations.

I'll give credit where credit is due. Here is an instance where Fox doesn't skew. The immigration reform that is on its way will have to include a pathway toward legal citizenship status for all undocumented immigrants now in the United States. Its the practical solution. Rupert Murdoch finally gets it. Maybe. Do you?

Bloomberg and Murdoch and their business cronies Love cheap labor. By promoting a law that gives amnesty/legal residence to illegal aliens, they will help perpetuate a flood of people into the Labor pool. The 12 million illegals already in this country comprise of day laborers to professionals. The floodgates will also open for more illegal immigration because people in other countries will see a chance to get residency in the U.S., even if it takes 10 years or more.
And "Yes!", having so many millions of people granted amnesty will keep wages stagnant for many many years. Every industry will be affected. Immigrants are willing to work for far less income than a U.S. citizen, and businesses know this and they exploit it to the maximum.
I know a food production company where 50% of the workers are illegal immigrants and they are paid legal on payroll at minimum wage. The owner enjoys the fact that he has a labor pool of un-documented workers willing to work for him for minimum wage. The rest of his employees are legal residents, but they also work for just a little above minimum wage.
Allowing employers get away with hiring the illegal aliens is a travesty and despicable. It's all about greed. The employers want to pay the least amount of money and they enjoy the fact that there are 12 million illegals, driving down wages.
Shame on Bloomberg, Murdoch, and the rest of their greedy cronies.

Give the migrants a chance you say? Are you referring to the illegal aliens that have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law and take advantage of our social services without contributing to their upkeep? Are you referring to the illegal aliens that have tuned ours into a bilingual nation through their rejection of our culture?

To grant amnesty to these people without requiring the same procedure as those that came before them is an insult to every naturalized citizen and will divide our nation even more than it is now.

If you want a more diluted economy and potential anarchy, that would be consistent with your stated desire.

The simplest solution would be to criminalize the employment and/or harboring of illegals, thus sending them out the back door and making them come back through the front.

I'm for giving everyone a chance as well, but that is not to say I support making a handout of what every other naturalized citizen has had to work for. This is especially the case when our economy is so weak and a variety of organized immigrant groups have expressed a propensity for racism and Marxist upheaval.

Well, of course he's for immigration reform- he's an immigrant!!! Have you all forgotten that he became an American citizen solely so he could own a broadcast station, which is forbidden to non-citizens.
Strangely, he had no trouble at all.... sailed right thru the formalities and tests. But, IOKIYAAR.

Murdoch, as a naturalized US citizen, has funded and enable sedition against our duly elected government ~ I want him stripped of the honor of that citizenship , charged with sedition and imprisoned or deported.

That IS the American Way.

No this is not the American way, but rather the Mexican way. If you don't believe me, compare their immigration statutes to ours. The first amendment protects seditious speech... period. If you want to live under a despot which habitually suppresses nonviolent protests, there are a variety of places in the world you can go to find such governance. The United States is not one them... not yet at least.

It appears that all you read are leftist progressive news sources. It is unwise to read media from only one side of the issue.

However, I don't favor a golden path to citizenship either.

I don't care if it is left or right if it is true. What I care about is our media and politics being influenced and owned and (Republican Party) by communists, and terrorists. And as an American you should be concerned as well.

I think it's more likely that Mexico will make Arizona their next state. We've already given up eighty miles of our southern border. The path to amnesty is the only way the leftist progressives in D.C. will remain in power.
01:45 AM on 06/26/2010
If we want cheap labor to rule our country then give them amnesty, we would deserve it. That will end our country and Constitution as we know it.

Otherwise.....if we are smart we will finally tell big business where they can go. We do not reward criminals................PERIOD!!

Please, tell me your plan to deport these 12,000,000,000 "criminals?"
01:27 PM on 06/26/2010
Turn off the magnets and they go home on their own. About 500,000 illegal aliens leave the population every year as it is. Unfortunately, 1 million enter at the same time. By simply making it difficult to live here illegally, the population will reduce over time, naturally. It's call the "attrition through enforcement" policy. Check it out.

Mass deportations are just as unnecessary and problematic as mass amnesty.

If we criminalize employing or harboring illegals, a significant portion will deport themselves.

Murdoch and Bloomberg are business to the core. So I have to ask "what does Murdoch" want that Bloomberg can give and or grant him? At this time nothing really big comes to mind but there is something - just what is not known.

A thought - does this have to do with FBN and Bloomberg News? FBN remains in the red. If there was a FBN/Bloomberg partnership of some kind would this turn FBN black?

NewsCorp needs to attract more viewers. Their current base is basically tapped out. If they support immigration reform they can attract Latin viewers. Why do you think BillO is spending so much time in LA? They want a bigger share of the CA viewing audience.

As we all know, it is harder staying #1 than it is getting to #1.

Rupert Murdoch recently said something about President and corruption which didn't escape my attention.

President Obama is impeccable. It's not an incorruptible surface coating like Teflon. President Obama is more like a incorruptible solid material like carbon steel.

I agree with Mayor Bloomberg and Rupert Murdoch on immigration reform, but I obviously do not agree with Murdoch on the topic of corruption in the Obama Administration.

It doesn't matter if you agree with anyone suggesting corruption in the Obama administration. The facts don't lie.

Sestak, Romanoff, Blagojevich, backdoor heath-care bribes, etc...

if he's for it,that means everyone else should be against it. He's only looking out for his own self serving interests. He doesn't care if illegals are here , they don't impact his life .
02:08 PM on 06/25/2010
WHAT? Billionaires realize that their jobs aren't threatened by mass cheap labor?

What a SHOCK!

Those of you supporting open borders need to realize that you're on the side of the wealthy and the exploiters. Big Business spends MILLIONS every year to push for more cheap labor. And you amnesty advocates are considered the "useful idiots" from their perspective.
