PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev toured Silicon Valley to see "the origins of success," and came away expressing optimism that his country will also be able to adopt a high-tech economy that would give everyone a chance to get ahead.

His visit Wednesday to the high-tech capital was bolstered by an announcement by Cisco Systems Inc. that it would invest $1 billion over 10 years to help foster high-tech innovation in Russia.

The Russian leader is on a U.S. tour that will eventually take him to Washington for meetings with President Barack Obama. While in Silicon Valley, he met with Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Twitter cofounders Biz Stone and Evan Williams, Cisco CEO John Chambers, and Gov. Schwarzenegger, among others. While visiting Twitter, Medvedev sent his first tweet and launched his Twitter account, @KremlinRussia.

See photos from his visit below.

Medvedev looks enjoying the tour and I like it. I really think it's a great thing that someone growing up under Soviet has such an open mind. (Well, I don't know if he's truly open minded but looks that way.)

Russians are very strong in Math, Physics, Chemistry and overall basic science. Their only problem is that the best of them are here in the US. After all, Google co-founder is from a russian immigrant family.

Medvedev looks genuinely charmed by Steve Jobs, not so much by the Cisco people.

It would do our economy all sorts of good if Russia were to become a consumer of our tech.

We are! I loved my iPod Mini I bought 6 years ago. Now I love my iPod Touch even more. Not a user of Apple computers though. Almost everyone in the post-soviet countries use Microsoft.

Russia doesn't have wars and religious fanatics and teabaggers bringing it down--they'll do well in this new age of Asia.

You would probably be interested to know that General Motors largest steel suppliers are Russian. Oh, and Russia is the largest exporter of diamonds in the world. It amazes me how the rest of the world has figured out that they need to get down to business and stop spending billions on they militarys and were still rocketing down the debt toilet. Does it really take what we have to blow stuff up? Really?

Believe they were inferring a Cisco OWNED computer. Since I doubt the auther knows of a single Cisco product as most America doesnt Im betting he just went with that.

After growing up during the cold war - it is extremely refreshing seeing such candid embracing of a Russian President by American technology moguls! Russia understands the important link of technology and growth of a country. Very cool

The Russians are trying to woo Silicon Valley to build an new innovation center. I wonder if Silicon Valley would be naive enough or greedy enough to give Russia a technology edge.

There is a difference between diplomacy and being a chump.

I am glad he is just showing the phone. The moment he tries to make a call using AT&T, Medvedev will cancel this tour.
