Tropical Storm May Halt Gulf Oil Spill Response

Gulf Oil Spill Tropical Storm

MIAMI (AP) -- The first tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season formed Friday in the Western Caribbean, but forecasters can't yet say if it will pass over the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday the storm has winds of about 35 mph (55 kph). Most storm prediction models show it traveling over the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico over the weekend and into the southern Gulf by Monday, hurricane center specialist Michael Brennan said. It was expected to strengthen to a tropical storm sometime Saturday.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, which separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico.

It's too early to tell if the storm will hit the northeastern part of the Gulf, where the spill has spread over the past 10 weeks, Brennan said. Somewhere between 69 million and 132 million gallons of crude have spewed into the water since the rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 workers.

The storm raises concerns over what might happen to efforts to contain the oil if BP is forced to abandon the area for a while. An armada of ships is working in the Gulf.

A cap has been placed over the blown-out undersea well and it is carrying some of the oil to a surface ship where it is being collected. Some of the oil is being brought to the surface and burned. Other ships are drilling two relief wells, projected to be done by August, and are the best hope to stop the leak.

Some models have the storm heading toward the spill, but others do not, and forecasters can't speculate about what rough weather would do to oil in the water, Brennan said.

The depression is on track to reach the peninsula by late Saturday. It is about 345 miles (555 km) east-southeast of Chetumal.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, two major hurricanes are swirling but don't pose an immediate threat to land. Darby is a Category 3 storm, with maximum sustained winds near 115 mph (185 kph).

The hurricane is located about 265 miles (425 kilometers) southwest of Acapulco, Mexico. It's heading west-northwest near 6 mph (9 kph).

Hurricane Celia has weakened to a Category 3 storm farther out in the Pacific. Celia's maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 120 mph (195 kph). The hurricane center says Celia is approaching cooler waters and is expected to continue weakening.

On one level the "spill" is nothing compared to the over 1000 tons of Depleted Uranium America has spread over Iraq ...the "oil" will be gone in one hundred years and things will be back to pre-spill conditions . Iraq on the other hand will have birth defects from the Depleted Uranium for Centuries. Winning the Hearts and Minds for Centuries around the world.

It took seven weeks to discuss the fact that hurricane season would start June 1st. We are learning about the lack of competence of our Federal government and their cozy relationship with the oil companies, to deal with this catastrophe. At the same time the four governors who have different agendas.and solutions.are in the conversation. Amazing how self centered all the players are.

The story in my morning paper today was about Allen Kruse. Allen was a charter fishing boat captain in Orange Beach Al. and had been for years. He was doing well and at age 55 was making a nice living for himself, his wife, and two boys ages 11 and 12. When the well exploded, it shut down Allen's boat business. He struggled for a long time, and finally went to work for BP helping to clean up the mess. BP treated him badly, forced him to work in arduous conditions and made it difficult for Allen to get paid for his efforts. Allen became increasingly despondent as he watched his life change before his eyes. On Wednesday, Allen went onto his boat and shot himself in the head. This situation has a real human component people, and we need to remember that. Allen Kruse...rest in peace.

Interesting how the language changed on most media outlet from "oil clean-up" to "oil recovery."

Yeah, because no clean up is going on!!
Bp only cares about recovering their black gold, not the inhabitants of our Gulf waters and inhabitants.

Henny Youngman the late, great comedian had a line when asked about how his wife.was, and he answered "compared to who"? I have problems with Obama, but the alternative would have been a castatrophe!.Imagine a right wing Supreme court for the next 25 years. And McCain with his hair trigger temper deciding to bomb Iran, with money that we would borrow from China. Unthinkable!
Imagine if he and his wife had to live together in the White house. full time..

No, I have more pressing issues to deal with...McCain is about as relevant as a f@rt in a skunk house.

Everyone needs to go to: www.adn.com Read todays story about BP in the Anchorage Daily News. You read about how things really are done in the oilfields. Most of the things they are talking about, are during the time that Sarah was in charge. Since she was an expert on the OIl & Gas Commission in AK, did she have a hand in writing some of the regulations?

Now, fox and fiends can rail against Obama for allowing a hurricane in the area of the oil spill. No more outrageous than railing against him for not stopping the leak.

What upsets me is that Bp was warned by geologists not to drill on top of a volcano. All they want is to make money over our dead bodies,Unless we do many things to setup an early warning system.. and there are many ideas out there we could lose 30 million from an explosion causing a massive tsunami..
