I think it's ironic, given the "USA-USA-USA, we're #1, winning is everything" mentality of most Americans, that when it comes to something we aren't particularly great at, so many people are willing to make excuses for the team and say how proud they are of how far we made it. Don't get me wrong; I think the guys did perform admirably this tournament, but it strikes me as inconsistent.

Well... it could be inconsistent... or maybe that "winning is everything" mentality doesn't run as deep as we think.

lol,,,,America will never excel at soccer, or at least it will be a long time coming. We have too many distractions. Not sure how religion comes into play, but ok.

The devil comes from underground... where it's hot. And soccer is the only sport where the ball remains consistently on his doorstep. And don't even argue that hockey is the same... the ice is a repellant.

This loss didn't come as a surprise. Not after the American media built up the US squad and heaped accolades on them... all while ignoring Ghana which is an African soccer power house.

Not yet a true American sport but in 20 years with American youth now playing soccer more than any other sport, it could be a world contender with many American players playing for the top world teams.
10:13 AM on 06/28/2010
That's what they said 20 years ago. Soccer's played by preteens in the US, as soon as they grow older they move on to more traditional sports. The only thing keeping the sport alive are the immigrants who love soccer, teach it to their kids who play in small nationality based clubs in the US. But as a US sport -- no way!

There's a really funny pic of some Ghanaian fans after their win, holding a sign apologizing to President Obama for having beat us. I thought it was cute of them.

Really? Looks to me that the game mattered to the US athletes that were playing their hearts out and crying when they lost the game.

and of course, it was so unsignificant that you felt the urge to comment about it.

At least the US gave us a thrill in the game with Algeria:

Stalling with the lead at the end of an important match is something every team does. They played an amazing game, and were the better team. Give them credit.

yaaa..doesnt make that a real 'amazing game' to people who like competition.. they looked like babies and i'm stickin to that

Ghana was the better team and they showed a lot more class than the Americans, with all of that crying about referees. Go Ghana Go. The world was rooting for Ghana because the USA are such sore losers that it is fun to watch them balme everythng under the sun for their loss except that the other team was better.

The US needs to learn that "When you win say little, When you lose say even less."

Congats to Ghana. Hope the U.S. goes further next time.

Actually, only a handful of snarky comments, and the ones that were snarky weren't TOO bad. I am ashamed to admit I am (pleasantly) surprised; I thought there'd be a lot of nose-rubbing. Most people were pretty glad to see the US team play so hard for as long as it did. Hats off to our international cousins.
07:54 AM on 06/28/2010
Well as most internationals I personally wanted the US to go very far even the last four (love their playing spirit) for the reason that for the next four years i don't have to listen to americans describe football as a "girlie sport" or "soccer moms" because they are not on the same level as the better worldwide known teams.

I was disappointed that the U.S. team didn't beat Ghana, but to me except for the second half of regulation Ghana appeared to be the better team, controlling the ball and keeping us chasing them around the field.

Nope, the Ghana team was far superior, faster, technically advanced and patient. Had to laugh before the game when told by "sportcasters" that the USA was favored 'cause it was just a ploy to get viewers int the USA. Most of the world's football athletes grow up playing their sport, like successful basket players do in the USA.

I'm sad that USA lost, but also glad that an African team is still representing in an African World Cup. :-)

And in South Africa no less! W00t.
07:31 PM on 06/27/2010
What sickens me is how people are so glad that USA lost, not because of how they played on the field but by other reasons that don't have anything to do with football. History, GDP, Obama, iPhones, military budget, really? REALLY?! I don't understand. Just because I support the US does that mean I should insult Ghana as a country? Why can't we be civil and respect not only the efforts made by the teams in this World Cup but also the countries that they represent? Maybe its the childish instinct where you gotta tear other people down to make yourself look good.

The US played well in this World Cup. I am so proud of what they have done in Africa and for the sport in our country. Yes the US has its problems but it's still the best country in the world TO ME, the only person that my opinion should matter to.

Learn to ignore the trolls. It's all political to them. They only "love" the USA when they're in power.
