Paraguay Eliminates Japan On Penalty Kicks At World Cup

AP/Huffington Post   FRANK GRIFFITHS   First Posted: 06/29/10 01:42 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:55 PM ET

PRETORIA, South Africa — Paraguay advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 5-3 victory over Japan in penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw Tuesday.

Oscar Cardozo clinched the win with a low left-footed drive past goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima. The only miss in the shootout was by Japan defender Yuichi Komano on the third try when he hit the crossbar. That made the difference.

The Paraguayans are the fourth South American team into the final eight; only Chile fell short, and it lost to Brazil in the second round.

When Cardozo easily beat Kawashima to end the exhausting match and nerve-racking shootout, his teammates stormed onto the field in celebration of the nation's biggest World Cup win. Cardozo pulled at his jersey, goalkeeper Justo Villar jumped on him, and they were quickly swarmed on by the whole team.

"This is tough. Both teams made a great effort. God was on our side," said coach Gerardo Martino, who was in tears after the game. "Now we hope to recover and to continue making history."

Japanese players watched the final shot on their knees with their arms around each other. When it went into the net, they let go and sagged. Keiji Tamada fell onto his back, while Japanese players and fans wept.

Paraguay will play the winner of Tuesday night's Spain-Portugal match in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

"We are very happy as we never got this far," Cardozo said. "Japan has great players, but we controlled the ball, which is what we wanted, and they didn't score".

It was the first match of this World Cup that went to penalty kicks, and for Paraguay it was no problem. Edgar Barreto, Lucas Barrios, Cristian Riveros, Nelson Valdez and Cardozo didn't come close to missing.

Neither did Japan's Yasuhito Endo, Makoto Hasebe and Keisuke Honda. But Komano's right-footed blast ricocheted off the crossbar as Komano put both hands to his head, realizing it could be a decisive miss.

It was.

Japan was a fun team. I shall miss Honda and the very intense Japanese goalie.

Japan's team was so fun to watch. I shall miss Honda and the really intense Japanese goalie who screamed a lot and pounded the ground when missed.

They really were entertaining to watch. Their two free kick goals in the Denmark match were absolute stunners, in fact they are the only team so far this tournament that have scored from free kicks. They played a very different match against Paraguay – very defensive, as teams tend to become at the knock out stage.

I shall really miss them and their fans.

penalty shootouts are a scourge. play another game for goodness sake.
or just make the world cup a series of penalty shootouts. then the whole competition could be over in a day

at this point, I'm rooting for ghana, just because it'll spoil all of the big money advertising if ghana wins.

Oh great. First the U.S. was eliminated and now the other team I was rooting for is gone too. Apparently I not only suck playing soccer but I suck at being a fan as well.

On the contrary that makes you a good fan. The worse the teams that you support the more you show your genuine commitment and loyalty. Nobody likes frontrunners and fairweather fans. Japan and the US have had their ups and downs - the lows only make the highs higher.

Exactly. Which is why some Brazil fans are so annoying.

Unless it is a team that I support, I always cheer for the underdog. Sometimes, it works out.

Penalties is a mere gamble where scoring is a matter of luck.

I do too...I wanted Japan to win.

I love penalty kicks to decide games that are tied. But I would nake every player on both teams kick one, including the goalie. High drama, high drama.

One pro team has a goalie that takes penalties (can't remember which one, think it is in Italy).

Congrats Paraguay/Japan on the stupidest round-of-16 game. Next time, two teams can skip first and second half and directly go to penalty shootouts.

Other games get scoreless ties.

This is a serious miscalculation to let defenders kick penalty kicks. They usually blast the ball rather than placing the ball and beat the goalie who would fly in the other direction. That happened before in the Brasil vs France worldcup and coaches should seriously think about who should be selected for those very crucial penalty kicks. As a coach, I would always select those who choose the Ronaldinho style pf penalty kick.

Are you saying that the coaches do not pick those that they feel are their best option? Why on earth would they do that?

Strikers do not always make the best penalty takers.

Komano just looked like he was going to miss, and the announcer made some comment before about how he was a non-starter defender, and maybe not a good choice for the shootout. But apparently the real difference maker was the fact that G od was on PAR's side. Oh well!
