Terrafugia Transition 'Flying Car' (PHOTOS, VIDEO): Extraordinary Vehicle Gets Authorities' OK

Huffington Post     First Posted: 06/30/10 11:10 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:55 PM ET

The Terrafugia Transition, dubbed the "world's first flying car," has just received the go-ahead from the FAA.

The Transition's creators have dubbed the two-seater vehicle a "roadable aircraft:" it can drive on any surface, and, thanks to its foldable wings, can transform into a personal airplane. It can fly at a speed of 115 MPH and has a 460-mile range. As the Telegraph notes, it "requires a 1,700-foot (one-third of a mile) runway to take off and can fit in a standard garage." The "flying car" is expected to retail for $194,000.

As AutoBlog explains, the Transition has just received special approval from US air authorities:

The FAA has just awarded the Terrafugia Transition an exemption which will allow the 1,440-pound car/aircraft hybrid to fly under a "light sport" designation, even though it hits the scales at a hefty 120 lbs. more than the rules allow. A light sport pilot license only requires 20 hours of seat time - far less than what a full license would demand.

CNET likens the Terrafugia Transition to a "Volkswagen Beetle in the belly of a carp." Think so? See for yourself in the pictures and video of the "flying car" below.

Waaaaah! I want one, but will wait for solar powered!

I have been waiting for this moment. Horray! for personal air travel above the freeways (and adjacent). Bring on the high priced fibreglass repair from every little mishap on the road ie; accidents, rocks and debris from the road. Extended ground time during repairs. Still it comes with the territory I guess. I'll get one when they come down to $100K and have enough air time

Not a whole lot of rudder or elevator. Looks like a flat-spin deathtrap to me.

Think I'll wait for my Moller Skycar (another decade).

One would think they could come up with a better solution than a bungee cord to secure the steering wheel while in flight.

Hmmm ... no need for a rental car. Think of the savings!

This latest and newest "Executive/CEO rich man's toy" ranks right up there with the Segway and Fiji Bottled Water as the most crass and ill-concieved products ever produced. (Oh wait... I forgot to include all the Windows Operating Systems released since 1987. sorry.)

Exactly. Flying-boatcar low-earth-orbit hovercraft submarine . . . that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell. Is that too much to ask?

Oh yeah, and some sharks with friggin laser beams on their heads!

If you are 50 then you probably remember the heyday of the ultralight planes in the early 80s. They were relatively inexpensive, and required little licensing or training. It all seemed so cool.

Unfortunately, they were the full size equivalent of a balsa wood plane, and many of them crumpled just as readily. Too many of them ended up like this.

Ouch. Too true. And I wouldn't want to try to parallel park THAT thing.

I think it is cool but would rather have a car that can fly like a chopper. I like the VTOL aspect of the chopper over the need for a runway. Some lockable rotors and a bit of transfer case work and presto. I wish I had the cash for R&D lol I wish him luck.
