Michael Vick, Shooting Suspect? Police Cannot Rule QB Out

Michael Vick Shooting

HANK KURZ Jr.   07/ 1/10 10:23 PM ET   AP

RICHMOND, Va. — Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Michael Vick says he was not involved with a shooting following his birthday celebration in Virginia Beach last week.

"I want to assure everyone that I had nothing to do with that incident," he said in the statement provided to The Associated Press by his representatives Thursday night. "I left the restaurant prior to it occurring and did not witness what happened."

Vick said he reported the incident to the Eagles and "to representatives of Commissioner Roger Goodell."

The former Atlanta Falcons star also said he has been "completely truthful and fully cooperative" with law enforcement and the NFL, and will continue to cooperate as the investigation continues.

The Eagles and NFL have said they are looking into the matter. Goodell told Vick when reinstating him last season that his margin for error was "extremely limited."

Police said earlier Thursday that they have not ruled out Vick as a suspect or person of interest in their investigation. Police spokesman Adam Bernstein said they will not discuss specifics of the investigation and that no one has been named as a suspect or arrested.

Vick met with police on Monday, accompanied by Woodward.

Bernstein declined to characterize Vick's status in the investigation.

"I don't want to say either way as to what his involvement is," Bernstein told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "Everyone wants me to give him a label because of who he is."

Police have not identified the shooting victim, but Vick's attorney, Larry Woodward, said it was Quanis Phillips.

In his statement, Vick did not name Phillips, a co-defendant in the dogfighting case that landed Vick in federal prison.

Vick, who filed for bankruptcy in 2008, is entering his second season with the Eagles and due to earn $5.2 million.

The NFL star's statement comes almost a week after the shooting early last Friday.

Woodward told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Vick left the establishment at least 10 minutes, and perhaps as many as 20 minutes, before the shooting took place.

But Allen Fabijan, spokesman for Guadalajara Mexican restaurant and nightclub, said Wednesday that he had video that contradicted Woodward's timeline.

The time-stamped footage from a surveillance camera outside the entrance of the club shows a car with Vick inside leaving at 2:07 a.m. – about 4 minutes before the shooting a block away.

The waiting car with Vick inside pulled away at about 2:07 a.m. heading in the direction of the eventual shooting. Numerous people were visible lingering in front of the club for several minutes until, at 2:10:55, they appear to be startled, with some ducking for cover.

Bernstein, who said authorities have a copy of the video, said the first 911 call about the shooting was received at 2:11.

Fabijan said police have asked him not to release the video, but he allowed the AP to view the grainy footage.

Vick's face is not discernible; a man wearing white that Fabijan said is Vick appears moving toward a parked car at 2:04 a.m. A crowd quickly gathered, and Fabijan said Vick accommodated fans trying to get an autograph, to pose for a photo or to shake hands – so much so that a club security guard eventually moved in in an effort to disperse the crowd.

his cousin WAS the co-d.....he also wasn't invited.....that's why Vick ended up having to leave so he didn't violate his probation.........and he HAS been ruled out as a suspect....have an idea of what you're talking about first....this had nothing to do with poor choices....you can't control people trying to crash a party....hence "crash"....which was the reason he made the smart choice and cooperated with the authorities in the first place...

Everything to do with poor choices. Why invite the type of people that bring guns and shoot people to his party? The co-d was shoot by someone. Have a idea of what " poor choices" means before defending his stupidity.

and where is the story that he is not a suspect anymore?

Thanks appreciate your perspective, which is far more personal & anecdotal. Mine is
arm chair quarterback perspective. All in all its really non of my business, its Vicks life
not mine, and I certainly have no clue what it would be like to have those issues you
mentioned.

I do remember first seeing him play in college against Miami and Peter Warrick. The
sportscaster kept pumping up Warrick but the real talent on the field was Vick. I
thought like most that he was going to revolutionize the quarterback position in the
NFL. Still might but this maybe his downfall. I hope not.

Why is Vick, who claimed to be a changed man, even anywhere near a co-defendant in his dog-fighting case?
Because he is still the same person who has no regard for life, canine or otherwise, and all the attempts by Tony Dungy, The Humane Socirty and the Philadelphia Eagles to portray him as anything other than a cold-blooded thug are as phony as his apologies for his actions.

These guys get an automatic pass in high school, take the easiest college courses but usually drop out of college anyway due to the money they want to pursue. They bring guns to airports, throw their money around like it will last forever and then end up homeless once the career is over. Let 'em go. These people wouldn't have gotten into college without the scholarship and were certainly never taught how to be contributing people.. Hope he gets booted and ends up back in his 'hood.

If it's him, prosecute him to the maximum extent possible. If it's not him investigate and prosecute anyone found to be trying to bring him down, including team owners and law enforcement!

Is this guy more trouble than he's worth?

Is this the same guy that couldn't wait to get out of prison so that he can be the "family man" he should be.

At 30, you go have a nice dinner out with your family and cake and ice cream with your family after at home.

No shootings, future employment in the NFL.

at the very least,he is guilty of horrible judgement by going to that club in the first place. he should be suspended by the team for violation of parole- associating with known felons.

"dog nonsense."

yeah, who cares that he raised dogs to fight each other and die and killed some of them himself? who cares that he had an interstate gambling operation? nonsense, indeed.

But he was tried, convicted, and served his time for that!

you right right I don't care about a dog. I've been to vietnam and China where they eat them I have pictures. But no one bats an eye at picking up the new Iphones which are by those countries. Why don't you boycott them?

I still don't believe he did any of that stuff myself considering I watched him on TV playing football. its hard for me to believe he could be in two places at once but that's me.

You are ignorant when it comes to dog fighting. I have investigated this animal cruelty felony and the perps are usually involved in a number of crimes besides the actual dog fights which include drugs and other forms of illegal gambling. This felony is not just non-sense.

the man played football had over $100MM in contracts and endorsements do you think he was in the dog fighting if he was for the money. At best, I'd say he tried to help some friends out who were starting a business that may have included dog fighting by giving them some money because they were friends he grew up with and really couldn't say no. That is worse case. Maybe it popped in now and then to and say what was going on and didn't stop it but logically why would a may who was making enough money that he could spend $1MM a year every year for the rest of his life if he lived to 120 and still have money left over without interest or investing worry about a dog night which at best best bessssst netted $100K less than he mad in a week. He obviously was the investor at best not the principle. So nonsense yes. Nonsense that a man should loose so much over an animal especially considering those animals are eaten my several countries the same people calling for vicks head do business with everyday happily.

I'm hating how Michael Vick has no common sense.

If you're on probation, it's best to LAY LOW at least until your probation is over. If Vick must have a party, it should be private and by invitation only. In a bar/club serving alcohol, sh#%t happens very easily.
See Ben Roethlisberger, Vince Young, Pacman Jones, now Michael Vick.

These players need to have wet bars and stripper poles installed in their basements.

There is a strong chance that the Eagles will release him and then no NFL team will touch him. At the press conference when they signed Vick, Eagles owner Jeffrie Lurie said that he will have a zero tolerance policy with Vick regarding any future drama.

He is a huge disappointment. I'm a fan of his talent, but not of his brains.

OK, I'm confused. Didn't they originally say the shooting took place AT this club where Vick's party was taking place? The same club Vick was seen leaving a few minutes before the incident? Now it happened a block away, and Vick was seen driving "in the direction" of the crime scene? Something's not right about this. Smells like bull.

Perhaps because he's hanging out with the same people he was hanging out with before he went to prison. Trouble isn't following him -- he's following the trouble.

Vick will be in training camp on day one. Get over it haters.

SO right on!

Move on, move on, h*8rs!!! Get on wid it!
11:32 AM on 07/03/2010
Vick will not be playing in the NFL by the time training camp begins.

can't wait to see him play again

01:10 AM on 07/02/2010
So has Vick already been tried and convicted within the thread or will he at least be granted the courtesy of innocent until proven guilty and until there is at least more concrete evidence?

this is the court of public opinion and in this court his past actions do, indeed, have a bearing on how people view his present actions.
07:39 PM on 07/03/2010
Hmmm, I would agree that would influence opinions, but from experience that rule seems to apply to some not all...
