Michael Steele Says Afghanistan Was 'War Of Obama's Choosing,' Not Something The U.S. 'Wanted To Engage In' (VIDEO)

Michael Steele Afghanistan
RNC Chairman Michael Steele questioned the War in Afghanistan and called it 'Obama's choosing' at a fundraiser this week.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele expressed an unusual interpretation of the relationship between Barack Obama and the war in Afghanistan at a Connecticut fundraiser Thursday.

"This was a war of Obama's choosing," Michael Steele said at the event. "This is not something the United States has actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in."

Steele also accused Obama of "demonizing Iraq while saying the battle really should be in Afghanistan."

"Well, if he's such a student of history, has he not understood that, you know, that's the one thing you don't do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan, alright, because everyone who's tried over a thousand years of history has failed," Steele continued.

Steele also extended his criticism of the War in Afghanistan to the mission's strategy, addressing the recent dismissing of General Stanley McChrystal.

"The [General] McChrystal incident, to me, was very comical," he said. "I think it's a reflection of the frustration that a lot of our military leaders has with this Administration and their prosecution of the war in Afghanistan."

Democrats were quick to highlight Steele's comments as further evidence that RNC Chairman has a penchant for misspeaking in ways that mangle the GOP message.

"This clip puts him at odds with about 100 percent of the Republican Party," DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse said.

RNC communications director Doug Heye later attempted to walk back Steele's comments.

"The Chairman clearly supports our troops but believes that success of the war effort in Afghanistan requires the ongoing support of the American people," Heye said. "The responsibility for building and maintaining [a] strategy falls squarely on the shoulders of the President. Like so many Americans, Chairman Steele wants to hear an explanation from President Obama on what his strategy is for winning the war in Afghanistan."

UPDATE: Steele issued a statement through the RNC on Friday afternoon in attempt to clarify his earlier comments amid criticism coming from both sides of the aisle:

"There is no question that America must win the war on terror," Steele said. "During the 2008 Presidential campaign, Barack Obama made clear his belief that we should not fight in Iraq, but instead concentrate on Afghanistan. Now, as President, he has indeed shifted his focus to this region. That means this is his strategy. And, for the sake of the security of the free world, our country must give our troops the support necessary to win this war."

The RNC Chairman added, "As we have learned throughout history, winning a war in Afghanistan is a difficult task. We must also remember that after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, it is also a necessary one... That is why I supported the decision to increase our troop force and, like the entire United States Senate, I support General Petraeus' confirmation. The stakes are too high for us to accept anything but success in Afghanistan."

That the only way Steele could call Afghanistan "Obama's War" is if he fell into a deeeeep sleep the day before Bush invaded Afghanistan and had no idea that it was BUSH'S war...

Alexander the great road up to the gates of Afghanistan about 320 BC and said throw open your gates or I will distroy your country. They laughed, he spent two years with a massive army trying to open the gate. He gave up and went around, The persians tried, the English tried, The Russian tried. Genghis tribe did for two hundred in about twelve fifty but they were consumed eventually. Hard to bet them on the ground. Hate to agree with Michael but!!!

Steele himself should man up and join the military and go to Kandahar and prove his point, eh?

Republicans don't fight wars, they support and profit from them. And yet they go about sticking out their chests proclaiming that they are the Party of troop support. And yet they balk at giving out troops the necessary support in equipment; and protest when someones suggests that film of the returning dead be televised; and give further breaks to Halliburton on contract renewal even though their "electricians" electrocute our soldiers in their showers.
This is the first truly pathological political Party this country has ever experienced.
And yet the same suckers who keep voting them into office will be Johnny-on-the-spot in the voting booths in November.

....I repeat Micheal Steele and most of the republicans suffer from a very severe form of short attention span deficit syndrome....It was THEIR president who got us in to this mess...it is mostly the repubicans that continue blow the horn of war in the middle east....WAKE UP AMERICA...the rhetoric machine is coming full steam ahead!!!

They may have started it, but they are working hard to make it Obama's war.

And the more troops he sends over there, the more we get bogged down,
the unreliable our local partners over there become -
the more it will become Obama's war

If President McCain had stepped up involvement, Steele would be singing a completely different tune.
If it were midnite, and Steele told me it was dark outside, I would still have to stick my nose out the door before I believed him.
I've never seen anyone with less credibility. He makes a perfect Repugnantcan.

WWI was not Wilson's War. WWII was not Roosevelt's War. Vietnam was Johnson's War. Iraq was Bush's War. Afghanistan will never be Obama's War. Afghanistan is Bin Laden's War. .......

It is easy to cast opinions if you do not have to suffer the consequences or are not bothered for the results. But I must repeat my earlier stance that those who are now shouting against this Afghanistan war must understand, it is not Afghanistan that matters but the terror that hits us in our own homes that is what matters. It is a war against terror. Please carefully differentiate it.

Just like your opinion.

You cannot have a war against an idea. That a fallacy; war against terror as if terror is a country.

We went to "war" against Afghanistan, specifically against the Taliban because the Taliban were harboring Bin Laden and would not turn him over to the United States. Thus we invaded Afghanistan, to fight the Taliban, Bin Laden and Al Qaeda.

FYI George Bush change the phrase, "War against terror" to the "Global Struggle Against Extremism."

Please get your facts straight before posting.
