Netherlands Eliminates Brazil From World Cup (VIDEO, HIGHLIGHTS)

First Posted: 07/02/10 12:50 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:55 PM ET

The Netherlands has eliminated Brazil from the World Cup in a comeback victory in the first of four quarterfinal matches. Brazil took an early lead after scoring less than ten minutes into the game, but the Dutch rallied back in the second half.

Midfielder Wesley Sneijder fired in a pass from far outside the box in the 52nd minute. The ball grazed the head of Brazilian defender Felipe Melo, although the shot would have likely been a goal even if Melo had never touched it.

15 minutes later, Wesley Sneijder struck again. Dutch star Arjen Robben rocketed in a corner kick that bounced off the heads of two Netherlands players, with Sneijder ultimately knocking the ball in for the go-ahead score. Scroll down to see both goals, as well as photos from the match and more from the AP.

Going into the match, Brazil was favored to win the entire tournament. The Netherlands will play the winner of Friday's Uruguay-Ghana match in the World Cup semifinals.

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa -- Soccer's perennial World Cup underachievers from the Netherlands knocked off mighty Brazil on Friday, stamping the Dutch as a strong contender to finally win that elusive title.

Wesley Sneijder, one of the shortest players on the field, scored in the 68th minute on a header for a stunning 2-1 quarterfinals win over the five-time champions. Brazil, which also went out in this round four years ago against France, lost its composure after falling behind, and defender Felipe Melo was ejected in the 73rd minute for stomping on the leg of Arjen Robben.

The Dutch made the championship match in 1974 and '78, lost both, and rarely have lived up to their talent in other World Cups. They did this time, helped by an own goal off the head of unfortunate Felipe Melo that brought them into a 1-1 tie in the 53rd.

Robinho gave the Brazilians the lead on Felipe Melo's brilliant low pass up the middle of the field that the striker put home with a low shot.

But soon, the Dutch took control, and the end of the match presented the unusual sight of the Brazilians scrambling wildly to find an equalizer.

It never came.

Instead, it was the Oranje and their fans doing the dancing.

After scoring, Sneijder sprinted around the field, tapping the front of his head, then ran to a TV camera and tapped the lens. He was in the middle of all the postgame celebrating, too, as his teammates swarmed him when the final whistle blew.

A few yards away, several Brazilian players lay on the turf, bewildered and beaten.

The Netherlands reached the semifinals for the first time since losing to Brazil on penalty kicks at the 1998 World Cup, and will next face either Uruguay or Ghana, which plays later Friday.

Having won all five matches so far, the Netherlands extended its team-record unbeaten streak to 24 games, stretching back to a September 2008 loss to Australia.

On a warm afternoon before a sellout crowd of 42,286 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Brazil dominated the first 45 minutes, then fell apart. Before the Dutch comeback, goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg timed his leap perfectly to deflect a shot by Kaka that was headed into the right corner of the net.

The one-goal lead wasn't enough. Brazil began to unravel when Felipe Melo jumped in front of keeper Julio Cesar and inadvertently headed the ball into his net.

Sneijder's goal followed a corner kick from Robben. Dirk Kuyt flicked the ball with his head to Sneijder in the middle of the 6-yard box and he rose high enough to deflect it into the left corner of the goal.

The positive in Brazil's loss is that now Dunga is FINALLY going to be fired, most of these players will get kicked out of the team (except maybe for Maicon, Dani Alves, and Julio Cesar) and Brazil will start building a new younger team and will go back to playing the beautiful way instead of this defend, counter attack crap Dunga did.

I predict Holland will beat the overated Brazil team, and my prediction became true finaly. Real Madrid will regret loosing Arjen Robben, and Wesley Sneijder for overated footballer like Cristiano Ronaldo or Kaka. Sneijder will be fifa world player of the year if he wins the world because he already won championship league with Inter Milan.

Don't get too excited. This was a really close game, Netherlands barely beat Brazil thanks to a Brazil own goal. This Brazil BTW was one of the worst Brazilian teams ever taken to the World Cup, thanks to Dunga who chose to ignore Brazilian players playing in teams like Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Milan, and Juventus in order to take the ones playing in 2nd rate leagues like the French, Portuguese, and Turk.

Felipe Melo was the man of the match since he gave the game away to the Dutch. He scored the Dutch goal, he had the opportunity to stop the second (but chose not to properly mark his man) and got that stupid red card that took Brazil out of the game. Felipe Melo is the"poster child" of Dunga's system. He is the player that Brazilian fans always complained about and felt that he had no place in the team.

However, I don't blame Melo for the loss. I blame Dunga for calling up players (like Felipe Melo) who were "commited" to his system as opposed to players who could make a difference. There were a couple of players from Brazil who were subs in their own clubs! Winning teams usually bring players who are in their best form for their clubs. In other words, a Brazilian loss was expected at one point with these players. But the international media seemed to celebrate Dunga's "efficient game" while the Brazilian fans (and media) had to swallow Dunga's stupidity!

We need an intelligent coach for 2014 since Brazil has a nice generation of young players to complement the current players who deserve to be there in South Africa, like Lucio, Juan, Maicon, Dani Alves, Robinho, and Kaka.

I agree with your analysis. If Melo was the 'hero' in the first half, he more than decimated his role in the second half with that self-goal and his ejection. Who knows what might have transpired had Brazil played with 11 men?

Dunga is over-rated as a coach especially since the team did not lose any significant games. However, his feud with Ronaldinho came back to bite him. Kaka had a sub par game and although the Brazilian team had 9 corner kicks to the Dutch's 4, the Dutch capitalized on a set play. Brazil had no answer to the physicality and the theatrics of the Dutch. One seldom sees so many towering players take a theatrical dive even when they were not touched.

And what is it with Danny Alves taking all those free kicks? On more than 3 occasions, he just blasted the ball off the wall of defenders. No set plays whatsoever.

Congrats however, to the Dutch team for the comeback and win.

The better team won. And those goals were things of beauty. The kind of goals one expects of the World Cup.

Brazil imploded, lost their heads. I have no doubt they'll be back, I have no problem with Brazilians or those who love Brazil, or have fond memories of the Brazilian game, and changing of style aside - I, quite frankly, - the previous exceptions excluded, get a little tired of those who just root for Brazil as the "safe" pick.

I think this was what the World Cup is about. It can be anybody's game (well, not just any team, but, you know what I mean). My condolences to true fans of Brazil, but there are other teams out there. It has only struck me that rooting for Brazil had become like rooting for the Yankees or the Lakers (if that makes sense - and I again don't besmirch hardcore fans of these).

Anyway, I digress, congratulations to Holland. Great game.

At the first glance on the TV screen of the World Cup matched on July 2, 2010 between Brazil vs. Denmark. The first half, the Brazil team played well than Denmark did, yet on the secnd half of the match, Denmark team played very well and the way they played they worked in team very well, and technically. Their ball controlled more than Brazil did.

I think the reason why Brazil team was defeated, it is because they did not play in team, they tried to show off themself rather than in team playing.

Cheer Denmark team, great work!

Holland did extremely well in the 2nd half.Brazil are no longer the architect of Jogo Bonito.Hhahaha,Pele should be embrassed by his early rebukes towards Maradonna and Argentina.I bet the Brazilians are listening to the Bossa Nova now, no more Samba.Argentina is surely going to take this advantag.Vamos Argentina.

PS. I do like Brazilian girls though.

Brazil deseved to lose the game as they played a completely uninspired second half and Melo deserved his red card for a flagrant foul. This World Cup has seen many "upsets" as traditional powers (like Brazil) have not lived up to their past. Many "analysts" make the mistake of basing their picks on the past history of a team. That doesn't work and a good example is Brazil. Other than Kaka and Robinho, Brazil has few creative, top notch players. Their #9 (a striker) simply is not in the class of the greats Ronaldo and Romario. American analysts make the additional mistake of adding up "star" players and then making a prediction: not possible since football is a team sport. Holland played as a team and showed grit, especially in the second half. They deserved the win, Brazil earned their exit.

good luck beating Holland now!

Brazil shouldn't have used 4 players carrying yellow cards. They practically begged to play a man short.
02:38 AM on 07/03/2010
Wrong, lodger. They played a man short because Melo committed a flagrant foul: he did not have a yellow card prior to his booking.
