New Yorkers Prepare For Queen Elizabeth II Visit

NEW YORK — The biggest clue that New Yorkers were going a little royalty-crazy was when someone stopped Tony Packwood on a city bus after hearing his British accent to ask him if he was here to see the queen.

"Why would I come here to see the queen?" he marveled Monday at the British food shop where he works in Manhattan.

Customers coming to Carry on Tea & Sympathy have been asking about Queen Elizabeth II's upcoming trip to New York City, her first in 34 years. Though her visit is scheduled to last just five hours, her arrival Tuesday morning has sent some anglophiles aflutter.

"The Americans seem to be a lot more psyched than the English," said Packwood, a Liverpool native, surrounded by shelves of specialty teas, Cadbury chocolates and ornate tea pots. A British-flag tea cozy and a mosaic depicting the queen hang nearby.

"We're kind of brought up with it – it's not that big an event. But you guys love it," he said. "We see her every day on our money."

Some New York residents were hoping to catch a glimpse of the 84-year-old monarch, who will be visiting ground zero for the first time and making her first address in over half a century to the U.N. General Assembly.

The New York stop comes after a visit to Canada, where the queen was wrapping up a nine-day trip with a tour of the headquarters of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion and a dinner with the prime minister.

Law student Joey Pegram, of Brooklyn, said she wished she could see the queen – just like she did when the monarch's grandson Prince Harry was in New York to play a charity polo match. Pegram said she arrived hours before the match, and ended up with a front-row view when the prince took a tumble from his horse.

A love of British royalty was a staple at her American home growing up, the 24-year-old said. Her mother's deep admiration of Princess Diana and her charitable works made an impression on Pegram.

"There's like a one-in-a-million chance to be born with that," Pegram said Monday. "Some people use it to do good, and some people use it to make scandal. And when people use their lot to do good, it makes me feel warm inside, I guess."

Next door, at the Tea & Sympathy restaurant attached to the shop, staffers said they too were excited for the queen's visit.

"I do have a lot of respect for the queen. I think she's quite cool," said waitress Natasha Kaser, originally from Thakeham Village in West Sussex.

Kaser did admit that most of her knowledge of the royal family came from what she called "trashy magazines."

"I love photos of when she was young," Kaser said. "She was so beautiful."

The queen's speech at the United Nations could remind some people of those younger times. She was 31 years old when she last addressed the U.N. in 1957 – four years after she was crowned queen and a little more than a decade after the organization officially came into existence.

This time, she was expected to appeal for world unity and peace. A former aide said that although the speech will contain some of her thoughts, it will have been penned with government officials.

Accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, the queen also was to lay a wreath at the former site of the World Trade Center to pay tribute to victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks. She also was to open the British Garden of Remembrance in nearby Hanover Square to honor the 67 British citizens killed on 9/11.

The somber itinerary seems unlikely to dampen the excitement among her admirers.

Stephanie Heitman, a Tea & Sympathy waitress originally from Colchester, England, said she hopes to get permission from her boss to sneak out to try to catch a glimpse of the queen.

Her suggestion for an addition to the monarch's itinerary make it clear that the 27-year-old's years living in New York have rubbed off on her.

"She should go to a baseball game," Heitman said. "She should go support the Mets."

It really goes against my Liberal tendancies but I really do love the Royal Family. Having spent a good deal of time in the UK thanks to my Brit Mum and Scots Dad I have become fond of the House of Windsor. It's fantastic Her Majesty is still doing these overseas royal tours at her advanced age. Well done.

People are jealous of her wealth and the fact that she was born into it and did not have to earn it. Not her fault.

That said, I'll bet she makes less than Arod.

Good Lord after reading some of these posts I can't imagine why she would want to come here at all. I think Americans have forgotten that after the war of independence Americans wanted to make George Washington the King of the United States. Like it or not the Queen opens doors for a country where most politicians cannot. I thought her visit was really more of a PR campaign, You know to sort of appease the Americans because of the BP mess.. ( And yes we all know that Britain divested itself of BP in 1987 ) Give the women a break, like it or not agree with the Monarchy or not The Queen still has considerable brand appeal.

She's in New York to address the UN and pay her respects at the 9/11 site and memorials. BP is a multinational corporation which has merged with several American companies. She hasn't any more control over it than the Australian PM has over NewsCorp.
09:07 PM on 07/06/2010
Yes MJ that why I said it that the British government divested its interest in BP in 87. With that said, if you don't think that The Queen stopping in for a photo op is not also an opportunity to save some face, since all the negative press Americans seem to be showering on the english lately, then Im not sure what to tell you.

too bad you Americans don't have Royalty, I know you secret love it and wish for it. First hand experience here, and I loved every minute of it, Royal Australian Navy 75th Anniversary Celebrations in Sydney, Sydney Opera House, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh (too bad the Queen wasn't with him that year). It was a smashing affair.

I loved every minute of it, even though I didn't meet his Royal Highness, there was lots of pomp and ceremony. If I hadn't been a monarchist before I was defiantly one after that, and I love my royal invitation.

After the Queen's visit to Canada in the last nine days, I think that many Canadians would agree with you. She has lived through and has knowledge of so much of both our countries' history. She also is a symbol of so many of the values and political structures that we share.

She was in Ottawa to help celebrate our 143rd birthday on July 1st and made an amazing, historical speech on Canada's journey as a nation.

Riddle me this:

Why are some of you so uptight about the queen -- someone who has been a gracious and well-educated hostess to hundreds of foreign dignitaries including about 10 US presidents, a patron of charities and the arts, a mother and grandmother of war veterans as well as a veteran herself (yes, she was in uniform in WWII, driver and mechanic), and someone who has given thousands of people a thrill by using centuries-old ceremonies to praise them for good work or good deeds --

and yet you'll hang on every word of a conspiracy-theory addled, under-educated cowardly lunatic who cries and wails his nonsense on television?

Canada's a vassal state. An independent democratic-republic is having a free conversation, shouldn't you be getting a note from HRH before you post? BTW, nice money ya got there, you guys are such well-behaved colonialist

Right, now look up "vassal state" and find out what it means.

Canada is an independent and sovereign member of the Commonwealth. Note that when Tony Blair lied the UK into the Iraq invasion, Canada was free to say, "Bugg3r off, we know the WMDs are BS."

Yes, our money is prettier than yours and less easy to counterfeit. The Queen, please note, is on the coins and the 20s. All others celebrate our finest prime ministers as well other aspects of our cultural, artistic and military heritage.

Regarding democracy, you should also check out our election reforms. It costs less to hold a federal election in Canada than Meg Whitman has pulled out of her own bank account. Democracy here means anyone can run -- not just the egotistical wealthy and the corporate tools.

Don't stress about it: many Americans believe that anything they don't have is wrong whether it be maintaining a bond though a symbolic monarch with the rest of the 53 countries of the Commonwealth or universal programs. She is really not visiting the US but the UN and ground zero to recognize the British citizens who died on 9/11.

It was amazing to see the multicultural crowd that greeted the Queen today in Toronto, many of them coming to Canada from countries that also recognize her.

Is she hiring you to work for her? No -- is anybody else?
Is she paying off your student loans? -- No
Is she having you over for dinner? Doesn't seem likely, does it?

Still, presumably you cared enough to visit this thread and provide a comment.

No but she does provide work and pays for hundreds of retired servicemen to work - and they love her for it.

Dr. Jill Biden must sometimes feel a bit like the Queen. Waiting for her husband to come out with his next inappropriate comment.

You know, they'd both be too discreet and loyal to get together over sherry and giggle about it, but I bet they wish they could.
