The GREATEST College Movies (VIDEO)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 07/05/10 02:07 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:00 PM ET

Films like Animal House and Old School forever defined and hyperbolized what college is like, but there are other works of art that do the job in their own way. Take a look and see which movies rank among the all-time best. Which one is your favorite?

Animal House (1978)

Animal House is the godfather of all college movies, mostly because of John Belushi's epic performance as "Bluto." The homage to juvenalia single-handedly changed the way people looked at fraternities.

Nothing beats "Animal House"! When I spent a semester in St. Petersburg, Russia, I showed it to my host sister.

No "Paper Chase"?

YES, I also noticed this omission.
Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paper_Chase_(film)

Anyone else think it's ironically funny that Jeremy Piven was the student hero in PCU, then a decade later/older was the evil fun-hating administrator in Old School?

I was in New Orleans a few years back for Mardi Gras, and Sean Astin was a grand marshall for some parade. This was right during the releases of the Lord of the Rings movies, so he was really popular right then.

So were people cheering for Sam? Were they quoting Goonies? Nope.....thousands and thousands of people cheering "Rudy, Rudy, Rudy" for blocks. It was freaking awesome.

Wait! So you acknowledged "How High" but failed to mention "School Daze" as a college movie classic.

Not only was "School Daze" directed by Spike Lee, but it had several great African American actors in it. I guess because it's based on life at an HBCU it doesn't garner any attention, which is very sad coming from such a diverse media outlet such as the Huffington Post.

I"m glad someone else caught it. School Daze is a classic on so many fronts. It's almost mandatory to see lol. People watch School Daze off of legend now. How many people can't wait to see How High?

Ditto . . . .

Looking back, I thought Animal house in their depiction of African-Americans was rather callous and demeaning.

Don't forget " Paper Chase " with Timothy Bottoms and John Houseman, a little on the serious side, but certainly had its comedic moments, I liked it.

That look on Belushi's face when he says "Sorry" in this scene. "Animal House" is comedy classic, and one I always have to watch on TV even though I must have seen it two or three hundred times over the years. What makes this movie so great is the writing. So many great lines... "You're all worthless and weak!" "I'm a zit!" "He can't do that to our pledges, only we can do that to our pledges!" "I'll write you a note, tell them you're too well to attend!" "Otis my man!"

The float they built for the parade is a cake that reads "Eat Me"
They confiscated everything, even the stuff we didn't steal!
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did.
So many more!

"May I have ten thousand marbles, please?"

"Chr!st. Seven years of college down the drain. Might as well join the f**king Peace Corps. "

"We have an old saying in Delta House: don't get mad, get even"

"Thank you, sir! May I have another?"

"Well, as of this moment, they're on DOUBLE SECRET PROBATION!"

"Greg, honey, is it supposed to be this soft?

I have only seen about half of the movies listed.

Animal House without a doubt is a great film. The look on Belushi's face before breaking the guitar on the stairs is classic.

I do love just about everything Rodney Dangerfield has done. Back to School was good/ not great, but I laughed just the same.

Nerds was very funny, I totally forget that John Goodman is the football coach. "We have bush."

Leaving out an inspirational story like "Rudy," which belongs in a different category altogether,
it's amazing--except for the classic "Animal House"--how few good "college films" exist.
=If we want to stretch the boundaries to include graduate school, I would add "The Paper Chase" (1975) to the list.

PCU - Not the best by most standards by one of my faves for sure! Port Chester University / Politically Correct University. It really defined (in comedic fashion) what was going on in the Liberal Arts Schools and the cliques within them during the 90s and early 00s.

Most definitely the college movie that I've related to the most.
